United States[edit]
Main articles: Nuclear weapons and the United States and United States and weapons of mass destruction
The United States developed the first atomic weapons, during World War II in cooperation with the United Kingdom and Canada as part of the Manhattan Project, out of the fear that Nazi Germany would develop them first. It tested the first nuclear weapon in 1945 ("Trinity"), and remains the only country to have used nuclear weapons against an enemy state in warfare, devastating the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the first nation to develop the hydrogen bomb, testing an experimental prototype in 1952 ("Ivy Mike") and a deployable weapon in 1954 ("Castle Bravo"). Throughout the Cold War it continued to modernize and enlarge its nuclear arsenal, but from 1992 on has been involved primarily in a program of Stockpile stewardship.[28][29][30] The U.S. nuclear arsenal contained 31,175 warheads at its Cold War

The weapon was developed as a deterrent against both the United States and the Soviet Union. Two years later, China had a fission bomb capable of being put onto a nuclear missile. It tested its first hydrogen bomb ("Test No. 6") in 1967, a mere 32 months after testing its first nuclear weapon (the shortest fission-to-fusion development known in history).[40] The country is currently thought to have had a stockpile of around 240 warheads, though because of the limited information available, estimates range from 100 to 400.[41][42][43] China is the only NPT nuclear-weapon state to give an unqualified negative security assurance due to its "no first use" policy.[44][45] China signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1992.[37] On February 25, 2015 U.S. Vice Admiral Joseph Mulloy stated to the House Armed Services Committee's seapower subcommittee that the U.S. does not believe the PLAN currently deploys SLBMs on their submarine
Two main theorists of international relations, Kenneth Waltz and Scott Sagan have been debating on the issue of nuclear weapons and the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the 21st century. In their book The Spread of Nuclear Weapons: An Enduring Debate, they both discuss their various theories, assumptions and beliefs on nuclear proliferation and nuclear weapons. To examine why states would want to attain/develop a nuclear weapon and if increasing nuclear states is a good or bad thing. In my paper, I will discuss both of their theories and use a case study to illustrate which theory I agree with and then come up with possible solutions of preventing a nuclear war from occurring.
Since the invention of nuclear weapons, they have presented the world with a significant danger, one that was shown in reality during the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, nuclear weapons have not only served in combat, but they have also played a role in keeping the world peaceful by the concept of deterrence. The usage of nuclear weapons would lead to mutual destruction and during the Cold War, nuclear weapons were necessary to maintain international security, as a means of deterrence. However, by the end of the Cold War, reliance on nuclear weapons for maintaining peace became increasingly difficult and less effective (Shultz, et. al, 2007). The development of technology has also provided increasing opportunities for states
Nuclear weapons pose a direct and constant threat to people. Not even close from keeping the peace, they breed fear and mistrust among nations. These ultimate instruments
After the end of the Second World War, the United States had a monopoly on the atomic bomb. However, this would see end in August 1949 as the Soviets unexpectedly detonated an atomic bomb. After this,
Nuclear weapons provide a great and purposeful value clearly worth the time and money spent on them in the 1940’s. The research in nuclear weapons has lead to many discoveries and ideas that still influence the world today. These ideas have led to the
In 1940, the United States of America, influenced by German research, began funding the atomic weapon development. 5 years later, on July 16, 1945, the bomb was tested in a deserted area in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Now, after the victory of World War 2 in Europe, Japan is not planning to surrender. America is going to drop the murderous weapon in early August, in hopes
The discussion of lethal weapon has put nuclear weapon in the top list. Nuclear weapons and atomic bombs had first created since the 19th and 20th centuries where the United States, Great Britain, and Canada joined together. As it has been known widely, on August 6 1945 atomic bomb in Hiroshima detonated, followed the three days after in Nagasaki. Those atomic bombs have caused death of one hundred thousand Japanese civilians and
Within America, the forces between the navy and airforce began to compete, and the stockpile of nuclear weapons began to grow. By late 1960s, there were over 31,000 nuclear weapons and 36 different types. The United States wanted to make the point of “we have more than you.”
The United States is the only country in whole entire world to ever use the nuclear weapons. Harry Truman was the president during World War 2 and also the one who ordered the attack of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The president never doubted his decision; to him it was an act of protecting his country and to end the war. “ We have used (the atomic bomb) against those who attacked us without warning at Pearl Harbor…. we have used it in order to shorten the agony of war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans.” The one who created the nuclear weapons J. Robert Oppenheimer never saw that way. He quoted “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of
The United States of America was able to develop 67,000 types of atomic bombs since 1951. They have achieved the greatest production of nuclear weaponry. The United States was not just successful in being a nation to construct an atomic bomb but more importantly was the first nation because of formidable events. The development of the atomic bomb was important during the onset of World War 2 (WW2) as it instilled confidence in the home country and nobody had attained a weapon like this. This gave whoever had possession of the atomic bomb ultimate power.
The United States has been developing atomic weapons even before their involvement in World War two. Starting in the 1940`s the United States had been working on making a new weapon, the atomic bomb. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the U.S. began their
The first use of nuclear weaponry in warfare occurred on the morning of August 6, 1945 when the United States dropped the atomic bomb known as “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, Japan. The result was devastating, demonstrating the true power of nuclear warfare. Since the incident, the world has been left fearing the possible calamity of another nuclear war. Joseph Siracusa’s Nuclear Weapons: A Very Short Introduction explains aspects of nuclear weaponry from simply what a nuclear weapon is, to the growing fear from nuclear warfare advancements in an age of terrorism. The book furthered my education on nuclear weapons and the effect they place on society, physically and mentally.
Nuclear weapons have only ever been used once in human history, and that was during World War II when The United States deployed missiles on Japanese territory, in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. At the time of bombing in 1945 only the USA had developed nuclear weapons, whilst today the pool of states consisting of nuclear weapons is still extremely small, with only nine states laying claim to nuclear technology and weaponry. This nuclear proliferation is explained by Darryl Howlett who explains this as the worldwide spread of nuclear weapons. For Howlett states are nuclear driven because of the ‘strategic, political and prestige benefits’ attached to nuclear weapons[1]. In the
Today, the manufacturing of nuclear weapons plays an integral part in diplomacy. The part it plays is deeply rooted in history, going as far back as the mid 20th century. In July of 1945, the US tested "Gadget," a 20-kiloton nuclear bomb. This project, known as the Manhattan Project, was led by J. Robert Oppenheimer, who quoted the Hindu
Nuclear weapons have been in this world since World War 2 and have been used, till date only twice and that too in the same war we are speaking about. The only country to use nuclear weapons was the United States of America. The US dropped two atomic nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the world witnessed the power of the man-made nuclear weapons.
