Annotated Bibliography Fed Up. Stephanie Soechtig. Perf. Michele Simon, Katie Couric, Bill Clinton, Michael Bloomberg. Atlas Films, 2014. Summary: This documentary showed how sugar is as addicting as cocaine. By 2050, one in three people will be diagnosed with type two diabetes, where in 1980, there was zero reported cases. Companies know this information and reduced the fat, but doubled the sugar in their product. Evaluation: Overall, this documentary had very good information that I plan on using in my definition essay. The statistics were very informational and easy to understand. I plan on using many of the facts about diabetes, and how much it’s changed over time in my next essay also. Werner, Doug. "Battling Childhood Obesity." …show more content…
The information I found about fast food chains targeting young children and teens will definitely come into use for my essay. I just wish that there was a little more information about the relationship between excessive weight and television ads. "How To Keep Santa From Making Our Kids Fat: Three Ways to Reduce Childhood Obesity." Forbes. com. Forbes, 23 Dec. 2016. Web. 24 Jan. 2017. Summary: A key factor in stopping obesity in America, is to prevent children at a young age from becoming obese. Ways that can help prevent obesity are, setting standards for school foods and tax sweet beverage drinks. By following those ways to prevent obesity in children, cases of obesity would decline by over half. Evaluation: I found some information that was useful, but also found it repeating from others that I have already read. I can use the information about preventing obesity to tie in with how schools and parents are a contributing factor to obesity. Otherwise, I don’t plan on using much information from this source. Some of these topics include: improving snacks and drinks in school, reduce sugar beverage intake, and have affordable healthy foods. Evaluation: I love this article, all the other ones were negative. This one focused on two big organizations coming together to make a change. How two organizations came together to stop childhood obesity will be very beneficial in my upcoming essay. Dewey, Caitlin. "Food-Makers are Taking Salt and Sugar Out of Food. but they'Re.." As the sodium and sugar decreased, producers have added more saturated fat. Many breakfast products have doubled their fats. An unknown person said “if you take 100 grams of sugar out, you have to replace those with something.” Evaluation: New information was stated in this article. The article was very informational and I agreed about what they were saying. I do think I can use the information about how they substitute ingredients by just adding more of the
The past fifty years has seen a spike in the consumption of sugar, that number totaling a tripling increase. However, sugar is not the only risk factor here, alcohol and tobacco can also be attributed with the spike, albeit not as prevalent as sugar. The biggest question that Lustig et al. poses to its’ readers is this: “What aspects of the Western diet should be the focus of intervention”? (par. 3) The current USDA has been deemed “boogeymen” of diets, as well as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Lustig et al. all believe that our attention should be turned towards “added sugar”, which is a sweetener that has fructose in it. Perhaps the biggest controversy from the past fifty years has been none other than a severe culprit that experts know as high fructose corn syrup or HFCS.
Robin Konie wrote “Let’s stop blaming fat, sugar, or any other “one” thing. Let’s get on the side of real food”. One must learn to limit the amount of sugar that they put into their body, although of course not all sugars are bad for one, nor are all fats. “More than 70% of Americans eat at least 22 teaspoons of added sugar daily.” (Richards). The majority are not aware of how much excess amount of sugar is going into their body. Sugar is addictive, and the body will crave more and more, if this generation, and the generations after are not educated, these numbers will go
In the article, “How The Food Industry Manipulates Taste Buds With 'Salt Sugar Fat'” it talks about the frightening truth that has been going on in the past few years with obesity and diabetes. Americans tend to have a huge addiction when it comes to food made with sugar, fat, salt, and as well as
Sweetness has been the obsession that affected humans for many years. It is the satisfaction that people seem to like, however, there might be a downfall to this addiction with sugar. There have been studies that claimed that the obesity rates in America have increased dramatically for over the past 20 years (Eatwell.com, 2012). Obesity rates have increased by double that it has made it to the top three health concerns in America. Experts are trying to find out what causes obesity. Moreover, there are studies that linked with drinking large amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages that a child can risk obesity. This might possibly prove that obesity can be caused by sugar-sweetened food.
The researchers have clearly done their research. The information is up-to-date and supported by statistics. A major complaint that I have against the writers is that they should have included legislation that has been proposed by state attorney generals to support the prevention of obese individuals in the United States. Examples of their work would have been great for the reader to absorb and see what they have accomplished in the
The point of this article is to portray that childhood obesity is on the rise. This source explains various reasons as to why childhood obesity has increased drastically. This source is relevant to my paper because I will be able to use it for all three of my arguments, which include, physical activity, diet, and parental influence. I would say that one strength of this source, according to the number references used, is that it is pretty accurate. The source was established by The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; hence I am confident that I can trust the information that it holds. One weakness about the source is that in some tabs not enough information is provided on topics that I think should have more information about them.
As a matter a fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said “[o]verweight or obese preschoolers are five times as likely to become overweight or obese adults as their normal weight peers” ( Phil 1). American children are easier to become obese adults that will later become a greater problem to society. “More shocking, an obese child can expect a shorter life” (Dalton 35 ) . Obese children are likely to face health problems such as “cardiovascular disease, such as elevated blood pressure or serum insulin levels or dyslipidemia, and 25 percent had two or more risk factors, type 2 diabetes” (Dietz 1) . For this reason, parents need to take action and solve the problem with obesity because it will affect children's health that can later result as a bigger
III. Main Point 3: There are many ways to prevent childhood obesity and helping them to stay healthy. A. Encouraging children to eat there vegetables, fruit, drink there milk, and etc. can help in many ways.
Obesity is a market driven disease that has affected the US the most negatively in the past 3 decades. Obesity isn’t just a health issue, but it is a national defense issue that will become a serious issue in the soon arriving future. The less that people act now, the less people we will have to worry about in the future. However, there are a few solutions to minimizing obesity in children and adults that will make major changes that many will not appreciate, but they will take a joint effort from schools and parents. The future of the US is in danger if we cannot control our youth’s dietary and physical fitness
Child obesity is a major issue in the United States, but with the help of government involvement, this problem will decay over time.
Despite controversy, however, there is an increase in obesity, diabetes, and heart disease prevalent in the world people share today. One thing all research has in common is through the elimination of added sugars, and how it can be helpful in all aspects of one’s life – especially through significantly lowering one’s risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Regardless of controversy, a wide array of scientific research has been able to find a linkbetween added sugars and obesity. Research shows, “In 2005, approximately 1.6 billion adults were overweight and at least 400 million were obese [and] these numbers [were] projected to reach 2.3 billion and 700 million, respectively, by 2015” (Hu, 2013, pg. 607). Not only did obesity rise, but it also showed a significant link between added sugars in a person’s diet. The ever-increasing rate dietary trends and food environments (fast food industries) all over the United States has been significantly linked to obesity due to the high amount of added sugars within the food served at the chain restaurants (Drewnowski, 2007). With the rise of fast food industries also came larger meal portions -therefore, even more sugars within
After reviewing the information provided, I have come to a conclusion that there is not one sole solution in stopping obesity within our children. There are way too many factors such as social, environmental, and financial that influences the eating habits and activity levels among children. The solution would have to be a multifaceted approach involving physicians, medical organizations, federal government, schools and parents. If nothing is done to combat the current the epidemic of childhood obesity, today's obese children may indeed have shorter and less healthy lives than their parents.
Childhood obesity is the constant build up of excessive fats that impair the health of a child. When children are obese, they have high cholesterol and high blood pressure that threatens their lives with CVD. It also causes extreme breathing problems, joint problems, and an increase in contracting type 2 diabetes. Nearly one in three kids in the United States is obese and that is more than triple the amount from the 1960’s. Childhood obesity is taking control of many kid’s lives throughout the country, and they need help (Par, 1-2). Childhood obesity has had a dramatic increase over the past fifty years due to many low budget families and cheap fast food. This makes it more convenient for families to buy their products. The government has taken part in trying to reduce this epidemic by doing a number of things. To start off, they have promoted better eating habits, and enforcing the younger ages to not eat fast food as much as they do now. The first lady, Michelle Obama, has put childhood obesity at the top of her list of problems in the Unites States. Let 's Move, “a federal program intended to increase the rates of physical activity among children and educate them about nutrition and proper eating” (Par. 3), was launched by Michelle in 2010. This is one prime example of how the government is helping fight this epidemic. Also, the FDA and the USDA have brought together some health and marketing experts. According to the experts, a guide with a set of principles
Despite the best efforts of public health officials, educators, dieticians, and many parents, childhood obesity remains a stubborn problem in the United States. This document and the accompanying PowerPoint presentation is the group’s final presentation of a health information campaign to combat childhood obesity. We cover the nature of the problem and why it’s import, our target audience, the message of the campaign, channels we intend to use, our tested messages, and our evaluation plan. We will also discuss the theoretical underpinnings of our campaign and
Evaluation for a credible source for an action plan on obesity on our youth. The article that I’m using as a reference to childhood obesity “Children’s eating attitudes and behavior: A study of the modeling and control theories of parental influence.” A study of the modeling and control theories of parental influence speaks about an experiment dealing with the kids and how the parent uses food as a source of reward. Therefore, 112 parents/child pairs were given a questionnaire that outlined and describe the eating motivations, meal intake, and body dissatisfaction for each child. However, additional items relating to monitoring their kid's food intake as controlling behavior. Unfortunately, it showed many conclusions from how engaged parents
