Introduction Text comprehension is defined as ?demonstrating understanding of the text at the mental model level by generating inferences, interpreting, paraphrasing, translating, explaining, or summarizing information? (Otero, Lecentsn, & Graesser, 2014: p. 17). There are various studies based on the cognitive science illustrating the understanding of text in relation to its comprehension for children (Chambres, Izaute&Marescaux, 2002). Such studies develop theoretical models for the comprehension process and test the predictions of the model by collecting empirical data from readers (Readence, J & Barone, 1997). Growth in reading is considered one of the most successful undertakings for most of the students (Searfoss, 1997). This research paper is aimed at highlighting certain text features and methods of reading comprehension. It is based on qualitative research carried out through various scholarly articles and educational reports. A brief overview is presented to highlight recent research on the topic and presents various factors, such as level of interest and their effect on comprehension in reading. The relationship between
The annotated bibliography is the second of four main projects in this writing course. I have never done an annotated bibliography before, so this was a learning experience. The expectations for myself on this assignment was to find good credible sources from the URI libraries database and write thorough summaries on the main points from each of them. I met most of the expectations where I explained the source material well and why it correlates to the argument. I formatted the citations well. I think one thing i should have done better to fulfill the expectations completely is to find better sources that contain data and statistics to support an argument. I learned from this project that credible sources are important and that for an annotations

Harknett and McLanahan (2004) assess the racial disparities in marriage and family formation among diverse ethnic groups to explain the differences in child rearing practices. Their study utilizes data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study composed of 3,700 children whose parents were unmarried at the time of their births as well as the 2000 U.S. Census. Initial interviews were conducted with the mothers after child’s birth and follow up surveys took place during their child’s 30 month follow up. The authors found that race, ethnicity, age,
As time goes on the familiarity with reading and writing is essential for an individual to better themselves in life, for the world we live in is a place for competition between every human to succeed. The value of literacy is not only for high-end people but anybody that want to gain knowledge. As one gains knowledge through literacy, it can extend toward one achieving their goals or achievements in life. The strategies when going over a reading assignment is a significant part of what one is trying to comprehend the text.
Ph.D. degree acquired authors, Ronald L. Blount, Ronald T. Brown, and Natalie C. Frank, conducted a study focused on predictors of the overall psychological adjustment in children who are battling cancer. They concentrated on anxiety and depression levels and how the child externalizes behavior. There were 83 children who participated in this study of ages ranging from 7 to 18 years. After obtaining parental and child consent, the researchers proceeded to give each

There are various issues arising from the patriarchal interpretation of Quranic verses that have prompted much debate about the status of women in the Muslim society and the use of Quranic verses by Islamic jurists to determine Shariah law formations. The classical ways of reading and interpreting the Quran and hadith were patriarchal that extensively contribute to developing sexual and gender discrimination within Muslims and are the core source behind this male-dominant Islamic thinking tradition. Children begin from an early point to understand that comprehension is the point of reading. Comprehension is the intentional thinking process that occurs as we read. Readers should be purposeful and active. They should use a wide variety of strategies, often simultaneously, to create meaning from text. As mentioned, comprehension strategies and explicit comprehension instruction are often omitted from reading instruction. When students are taught a set of comprehension skills, they will be able to become better independent readers. For students whose home language is Spanish, small group instruction in their home language and Academic English will allow them to transfer their comprehension skills so they can find the meaning of their reading. The first aim of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of purposeful reading comprehension instruction. The second aim of this study is to use the comprehension strategies during English instruction and Spanish instruction so students will be able to independently apply those meta-cognition skills that will result in improved reading comprehension
That being said, comprehension is not just understanding the singular words that are being read, but being able to put them together, along with activating previous knowledge, make sense and develop meaning to the text. Essentially, when a reader is immersed and engaged in text, they are actively developing meaning to the text while formulating questions that may later be answered by the text itself.
