Personal Notes
Literary Aspects
Pre-Launch:
“the launch tower is long gone…”(Pg.25).
This descriptive section reminded me of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster as this was about the time when the Challenger broke apart in mid air. This lets me relate to the feeling the astronauts may be feeling at the time, anticipation with a mix of fear.
“Spaceflight participants...pay between $20 and $40 million…”
This reminded me of an article I read about the invention of a space elevator which is said to be able to greatly reduce the cost of space travel.
CAPCOM(Pg.30).
REACTION: This job shows the utmost importance of communication in NASA.
“...taught me how to prioritize better..”(Pg.32)
I see many relations from this book’s views and TJ.
(Pg.34)

They were faced with a problem (oxygen tank explosion) and they had to problem solve with little time to get home safe.
(Pg. 88) Hadfield is talking about what would happen if there was a leak, and it amazes me even more that he isn’t afraid.
(Pg. 89) As Hadfield is talking about his analogy with the Empire State Building, I remembers of a similar situation that happened to me this summer
(Pg. 97) I never knew that becoming an astronaut was so selective before reading this book.
(Pg.117) I am very afraid of bees and seeing how Hadfield kept steady with a bee in his visor amazes me.
“I’m a condemned man and this is my last meal” (Pg.23)
Metaphor
“Flashbulbs pop pop in the predawn darkness...l” (Pg.24)
Imagery
“The rocket stirs…”(Pg.25)
Personification
“Six seconds to go… It feels like magic, like winning, like a dream” (Pg. 25)
My report will be on the book, The First Men on the Moon. It is authored by David M. Harland, and published by Praxis Publishing. David M. Harland is a space historian, and is known for writing many other books on the subject of space exploration.
Planning for the Apollo Space Program began in 1957 and the program ended in 1972. The Apollo Space Missions increased our understanding of the moon. The goal of the missions was to land men on the moon and return them safely to earth. This goal was achieved with Apollo 11. On July 20, 1969 man walked on the moon for the first time. This was a huge step in space exploration and much preparation had gone into it. Apollo 8 orbited the moon, but did not test a lunar lander, and Apollo 9 tested a lunar lander while orbiting earth. After achieving the goal of getting man to the moon, the Apollo program continued to enlarge our understanding of the moon. Apollo missions 12 and 14 installed seismic stations on the moon’s surface. This led us to the discovery of “moonquakes”, which are essentially earthquakes on the moon’s surface.
In November 2011, retired astronaut James Lovell sold a valuable item through an auction house. It was a checklist from the Apollo 13 moon mission in 1970. It was sold by Heritage Auctions for more than $388,000. It brought in so much money because it has Lovell's handwritten notes on it. Now, though, NASA is claiming that Lovell had no right to sell the checklist. The agency claims that the checklist did not belong to Lovell; it belonged to NASA. NASA is also making this claim for three other items from the auction.
This is a country of many heroes and though we honor lots of them we will never be able to honor everyone. I believe that a group of these heroes who deserve a holiday are the Apollo 11 mission control and team, Apollo 11 was the space mission in which Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the moon.
Apollo 17 was a very interesting lunar mission, and the goal of the mission was to conduct a geological survey of the moon. The mission also had several other purposes such as conducting scientific experiments. The reason why it landed in the Taurus-littrow highlands is because it was a place on the moon that had not yet been explored yet. Scientists were hoping to get some interesting new rock samples. The mission took place on December 7, 1972.
The Trials Of Apollo, written by Rick Riordan, is a Greek Mythology book. Often when individuals experience hardship they often seek to fix the problems that lay ahead of them. The topic given brings Confusion in our lives. Apollo is extremely confused about what he needs to do to get the Oracle and survive while doing it. When Apollo woke up to falling from the sky and then landing in some garbage he experienced extreme confusion on why he was there and what he had to do to go back home. Apollo then looks at himself and he got changed into a teenage boy. This illustrates that Apollo has no idea where to turn or who to trust which proves that he is confused. Apollo then decides that he needs to go to Camp Half Blood and then figure out what he needs to do after that. Individuals who face confusion often seek to find closure to their problems because if said individual didn't push past their problems they would constantly be stuck with their hardship without getting over it.
On, April 11, 1970 Nasa launched the Apollo 13 mission to send three astronauts. To the moon , and mark the third named lunar landing. The mission aimed to send Commander Jim Lovell and lunar module pilot Fred Haise to the lunar surface while command module pilot Jack Swigert remained in orbit. But on April 13, the mission suffered a crippling explosion that would nearly doom the spaceflight and its crew. But Apollo 13 carried an oxygen tank with a troubled history. The tank had been damaged in testing, but the space craft builders were not aware of a problem. The cyclinder service module had six held the fuel tanks. Sector 4 held the damaged oxygen tank at about 56 hours into the flight of Apollo 13, Jack Swigert was instructed to “Stir
The crew aboard the spacecraft includes Fred Haise, Jim Lovell, and Jack Swigert. When their oxygen tank explodes, all three men make their best attempt to stay calm and discover what happened. When they get news that time is extremely limited, they promptly follow all instructions given to them and power down the ship. Back on Earth, the mission control team is using every resource possible to acquire a new plan. The accident causes the the team to think of solutions to conditions that were never simulated.
Apollo 11 was a national goal set by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961. Apollo 11 is the goal to perform a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth. Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969 at 9:32 am. Apollo 11 took off with astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. The commander of the mission was, 38-year-old civilian research pilot, Neil Armstrong.
For the enrich project I decided to research and look into the Apollo missions. I watched the movie Apollo 13 with my husband not long ago, and I really got an interest in what really happened with all of those missions and what they led to. The concept of searching space was something that was extremely interesting for everyone at that time. The first Apollo mission completely failed, and there was a fire killing all of the astronauts in the shuttle. It took until Apollo 11 to actually land on the moon. There were many other attempts after that, only succeeding on Apollo 17. Other than those two times, of over 10 tries, there were two moon landings. This was something that was amazing. Many people thought that the whole concept of
In the article, the author explained how much money was spent sending satellites into orbit. The author stated that the cost to send a small satellite into orbit was around $100 million. For a larger rocket that carries a heavier payload, it is around $400 million. The author also made the comment that
At first I wasn’t sure if she meant for me to hear that but before I could stop myself I heard my own voice. “I know.” Honestly, I hated her too and I didn’t know what I was thinking when I decided to come with her. I guess I just thought she needed protection. That’s a brother’s job right? To protect his little sister. I don’t know how else to explain it.
The Temple of Apollo used various materials that were demanded by the priests. All its architects and constructors worked under the instructions of priests as this was to be a holy place. For special buildings like this, materials would even be imported to make sure they get the right structure
The Apollo 11 mission of 1969 marks the biggest leap in technological advancements for humanity. Neil Armstrong is seen taking the first steps on the moon forever making his mark in humanity. However, theories surrounding the moon landing have come to light. Conspiracy theorists say NASA, the National Aeronautics Space Administration, have faked the Apollo 11 moon landing. Yet, present evidence can support the authenticity of the moon landing. Evidence such as photos, rock samples, technology, and computer monitoring support the moon landing. The moon landing of 1969 did happen.
Although the Space Elevator will not make trips to space faster, it will make trips to space more frequent and it will open up space to a new era of development. Perhaps the biggest factor propelling the idea of a space elevator is that it would significantly lower the cost of putting cargo into space. Although slower than the chemically propelled space shuttle, the lifters reduce launch costs from $10,000 to $20,000 per pound, to approximately $400 per pound. This dramatic drop of expense required to traverse space would finally allow private investors to invest in a new area, known as “space production”. For example, titanium produced in earth’s environment has a maximum tensile strength of 200,000 psi but in the zero gravity of space “in theory” the tensile strength of titanium can be increased to over 500,000 psi. In addition, titanium will be much easier to manipulate in space thereby giving rise to new applications—with double strength.
