Apollo 13: Third Attempt To Land On The Moon

Apollo 13 launched on April 11, 1970 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crewmembers aboard the ship were James A. Lovell Jr., John L. Swigert Jr., and Fred W. Haise, Jr. Before the launch, there had been a few problems. Thomas K. Mattingly was supposed to fly on the Apollo 13 but he was exposed to the measles. He didn’t have the antibodies to fight the disease, causing him to not be able to go into space. Swigert took his place. Right before the launch, one of the technicians saw that the helium tank had a higher pressure than expected. Nothing was done to fix this. During liftoff, the second-stage engine shut down, causing the other engines to run longer than planned. Apollo 13 was off to a rocky start.

Apollo 13 was the seventh attempted mission to go to the moon for the third time in April 11th 1970. The men who were assigned to that mission were Jim Lovell Fred Haise and Ken Mattingly. However Ken Mattingly got diagnosed with the measles, so they had to replace Ken with Jack Swigert who was the backup command module pilot for the Odyssey.

Apollo 13 was called the successful failure because of the effort to bring the crew back home. It involved three trained to be astronauts to set foot on the moon. The three astronauts are Jim Lovell, Ken Mattingly and Fred Haise but, Charles Dickson exposed the crew to German Measles and Ken Mattingly was not immune to measles and had to be replaced by Jack Swigart who was part of the backup team. Soon after they were practicing to fly the ship and was not very good. 2 days later it was the day of the launch .

Where Apollo 13 took place and launched, was at the complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. It happened at 2:13 p.m. EST, April 11, 1970. What had caused it to orbit the moon and come back, was a ciple in the oxygen tank. One thing that happened was on the Apollo 13 spacecraft, a oxygen tank was crippled and they had to orbit the moon and return home. The main event was that for the third time, they successfully lifted off once more, just to run into a problem with the oxygen tank. The people involved (meaning on the Apollo 13) were: Fred Haise, Jack Swigert, and Jim Lovell. It kind of ties in with Apollo 11 because they both went to the moon but, Apollo 11 was made up to beat the Soviet Union in the Space Race by John F. Kennedy. Apollo 13 ties in with the three theme words, Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in these three different ways: Exploration, they explored outer space and learned many new things about plants, if anything grows on the planets, if anything lived there they didn 't know about, etc. Encounter, they encounter many new materials (plastic is one of those things). They had encounter a cripple and the oxygen tank that happened on the Apollo 13. Exchange, they exchanged ideas about what to do about the cripple of the one of the oxygen tank.
