Are guns and crimes truly connected? Both guns and crimes seem to go together, but do guns always lead to crimes? Will stricter gun control laws stop crimes and protect civilians? These are some of the questions that are usually asked when it comes to the debate about creating stricter gun laws. These questions are not new because the debate has been going on for multiple years. The debate continues on today because of acts of violence committed with firearms. From watching the news and hearing past events, citizens all know that firearms are very powerful and dangerous. In the hands of a perpetrator, guns can cause harm or even be fatal to others. Firearms can also be used as protection towards oneself. Whether or not the firearms are being used for an emergency, they are still seen as powerful objects that may hurt others. One of the major acts committed when firearms are involved is school violences. ¨School violence refers to criminal acts committed at educational institutions such as elementary, middle, and high schools as well as colleges and universities” (¨School¨ 1). A recent school violence happened on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. On that day, “twenty-year-old Adam Lanza Adam was armed with a variety of weapons, including two handguns and an assault rifle (“Guns” 17). With those firearms, he killed his mother, six adult staff members, and twenty first-graders (17). When school violences such as Sandy
School should be a place of peace and opportunity, but gaps in the system of gun control threatens the safety of faculty and students. School shootings have killed a total of 297 lives, young and old (Slate Magazine). Gun control has been a continuous nationwide debate for many years. It seems that no one wants to take a stance against guns unless they are personally affected. In order to take control of the matter and prevent more incidents from continuing schools need to change. To achieve a safe environment in schools need to educate faculty, safe and students, heighten security, and assess mental health issues.
Violence in society is increasing dramatically and not only is it out in the streets, but it’s in the school systems as well. However, school violence has been becoming more and more of a problem all over the nation in the past several years. School violence needs to stop because no one should be afraid to go to school without feeling like it’ll be their last day.
If more guns does not indicate an increase in levels of violence, then what can be attributed to this relationship? According to Dudler, Cantor, and de Moore (2007), blaming a weapon for a crime is an illogical solution to the issue of gun violence. Furthermore,
Usually when people think about guns they think about crime. But are the two really related? Do guns really lead to crime? And if they do, do laws that restrict firearm ownership and the use of guns stop the crime or protect people? These are the questions many politicians are asking themselves when creating gun control laws. The debate over gun control is nothing new. As you can see this debate still goes on today and is the cause for the beginning of gun control laws.
Gun control has become a very hot topic of contention in America today. What seems to echo here are two words: “guns” and “crime”, in a sense that are these words mutually exclusive to each other? Does the use of guns ultimately lead to crime? On the flip side, have the laws in America restricting firearm use been effective enough to protect the lives of the citizens? These are some of the questions that strike the hearts of many when the gun control debate music is played. However, the debate about gun control is not new.
The article discusses the effect of school shootings in the U.S. It highlights the U.S. 2nd Amendment in the Constitution that provides human rights to keep and bear arms but prohibits individuals from owning loaded guns in the country's several states including Washington, D.C. and Illinois. Also mentioned is the increase in cases of mass school shootings from 1760 to 2014 despite the implementation of gun-free school zones in 1995.
The issue of gun violence in schools has been a critical issue on the forefront of national politics in the previous years. There have been way too many school shootings in the United States and even in other countries. Governments are trying to come up with strategic solutions to fix this major issue. Many politicians and human rights activists have been advocating for better gun control and better ways to keep students more protected in schools. Some people believe that school faculty should be allowed to carry weapons as a measure of increased security. Gun control is a problem that must be tackled by rethinking the presence of guns in our society and not making the problem worse by adding more guns and allow an outlook of using guns to
School shootings have altered American history greatly over the past two decades. From 1997 to 2007, there have been more than 40 school shootings, resulting in over 70 deaths and many more injuries. School shoot-outs have been increasing in number dramatically in the past 20 years. There are no boundaries as to how old the child would be, or how many people they may kill or injure. At Mount Morris Township, Michigan, on February 29th, 2000, there was a 6 year old boy who shot and killed another 6 year old girl at the Buell Elementary School with a .32 caliber pistol. And although many shootings have occurred at High Schools or Middle Schools, having more guns on those campuses would not be a good environment for children to grow up in.
If there is a weapon in the classroom it is possible to be used accidentally or for suicide. There are cases where many innocent people were killed or injured in such shootings, and sometimes students are shot by other students. Parents also are concerned about their children when they go to school. Their children need educational materials, art and music programs, entertainment programs, and peaceful environment; they do not need more guns in their
It is without a doubt that there has been an increase in violent crimes in schools throughout recent years. School shootings continue to become more and more common, especially in North America. Safety concerns for any and all students and staff in schools are at all all time high due to the high number of fatal and non-fatal occurring incidences. Since 2013 to the present, it is estimated that the United States has seen approximately 205 school shootings. Weekly, that is a shocking one shooting on average. Many of these shootings have resulted in the injuries and deaths of multiple of students and staff members. (Everytown Research, 2017) Evidently, school shootings are tragic events that affect so many more people than just the victims. However, these events are also interesting to look at from the psychological and sociological point of views. Through much research, it can be concluded that school shootings are a complex problem that are caused by a mix of improper brain development and societal and media influences which motivate school shooters to emerge. Psychological factors may include struggling with mental illnesses and/or abuse that leads to damaged brain development. Additionally, being bullied and/or the role of the media are examples of sociological factors.
Crime and guns seem to go hand in hand with one another, but in reality are the two really connected. Guns are powerful weapons that can cause destruction, harm, or death, but they could also be used to defend and protect citizens. If guns really lead to crime, does the government placing restrictions on guns will it help protect its citizens? The main responsibility of the government is to protect the basic rights of its citizens including the second amendment which gives the right for Americans to carry guns. The government also needs to make new laws to ensure the safety or well-being of their citizens. The government should not deny the right for people to carry guns but they could choose who buys the guns and what types of guns citizens
Urban, suburban, and rural schools alike report a decrease in school violence between the years 1992 and 2015. The data on serious violent victimizations show a decline from eight per one-thousand students to four per one-thousand students in that same time period (Musu-Gillette, 36). This trend, while encouraging, still amounts to around 840,000 violent crimes taking place, many of them serious violent crimes. Taking Saavedra’s article at face value, the statistically low number of deaths in the last twenty-five years, an average of ten per year, is the end of the story. The fact is, though, this perspective taken from a study at Northeastern University, looks at gun deaths as the only determinant of safety. Adichie, on the other hand, encourages looking for more than one viewpoint to get a “balance of stories” (Adichie 14:29). Saavedra notes that gun deaths on campuses are four times lower than in the
Guns and crime. These two words sound interesting, right? Now think about it deeply, do they really link to each other? Do guns surely lead to crime and violent issues? If so, should governments set restrictive rules for people who own and use the guns, such as provide the mental health reports, and test the shooting skills before purchasing the guns? These questions have been mentioned and discussed over and over again in today’s world. We can often hear the news about gun violence, such as a tragic mass shooting somewhere around the world and tons of victims who died from the accident, or husband that shot his wife by accident. Thus, many people, especially people in America, are asking, and even doubting whether or not it is beneficial to own guns at home without a license. In my opinion, I think that owning a gun can be helpful sometimes in some ways, as it can always be the extremely powerful and helpful weapon for self-defense, especially when help from the law enforcement officers are not available.
Controversy has sprung up around guns used in school shootings. The inclination to kill would still live in an aggressor, but if they decided to carry out their aggression without a firearm, it wouldn’t be as fatal. School shootings are a result of the invention of gun; sudden, fast, and expansive mass murders would be almost impossible without the use of guns. There have been 153 school shootings since 2013 resulting in tens more than, a number that would be extremely difficult to achieve with these tragic situations could have been prevented if the gun had never been
A study by the National School Safety Center reported school deaths have occurred in all but eleven states (Facts 1). Guns caused seventy-seven percent of all violent deaths in schools (1). Two hundred and thirty-five school-associated violent deaths occurred in the United States over the past eight years (1). One in twelve high school students is threatened or injured with a weapon each year
