“Fifty-five percent of Americans want all or most abortions to be considered illegal” (operationrescue.org). For many decades, multiple controversial issues have been splitting the world apart in 2 sides: support it or against it. Some of these major controversial issues that are being discussed today includes: racial profiling in law enforcement, human trafficking or prostitution, and legality of medical marijuana. One issue that has been constantly been debated on since the late 1800’s is whether or not females have the right to abortion of babies. A majority of Americans do not support abortion, although the practice of abortion is known to be legal due to many circumstances. Abortion is to be considered legal because women have full rights to their bodies, and that embryos are not considered babies yet. Today, many questions are asked about abortion. What is abortion? Why is abortion such a big deal? Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy so that it does not result in a birth of a child. Every year, 1 in 3 women in the United States do abortion because of unintended pregnancies or other reasons (operationrescue.org). Many women who chose to do abortion during the 1900’s almost never survived, due to inexperienced and illegal doctors that were willing the perform these tasks in secrecy (prochoice.org). Laws against abortion were created around 1870’s and made abortion illegal due to this reason, until 1973 in the case of Roe v. Wade which decided that abortion is any women’s choice and it should not be considered illegal. Still, many states pass laws to restrict abortion rights today. One reason why abortion is legal is because reproductive choices allow women to have full control over their own bodies. “This right of privacy… is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy” (Roe v. Wade, US Supreme Court). In a popular court case known as Roe v. Wade, the Justices declared that women have the right to choose if they wish to carry their pregnancy to term or terminate it.
