Argumentative Essay On Global Warming

Decent Essays

The climate change debate discusses to the global controversy over whether global warming is occurring and what has caused it. It is believed by scientists worldwide, that anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases have caused an increase in global surface temperatures in recent decades (Sciences, 2013). Apart from a few bodies that hold non-committal positions, no scientific body of national or international status disagrees with this view (DiMento & Doughman, 2007).
When investigating climates antecedent to human history, indirect methods are exclusively depended upon. Those used to calculate past temperatures, observe responses to past temperature change that are preserved in ice, rock and fossils (temperature proxies). Marine sediment cores also provide indication of temperature records spanning millions of years, as they contain fossilised shells of tiny marine creatures which conserve a chemical record of the sea temperature when they were alive. The width of growth rings in tree trunks depend on the climate conditions at the time of growth, so can reveal the length of growing seasons. However, the further back scientists look, the sparser the proxy temperature records become so the most reliable way to work out temperatures is to combine different proxies from many locations to screen out local temperature fluctuations.
For example, ice sheets form as snow builds up, meaning each years snowfall is preserved as a single visible layer. There are measurable chemical
