Social media has allowed many different forms of interaction. Websites such as Facebook have allowed for old friends to reconnect and remain aware of others’ life events even when separated geographically, as well as allowing new friends to connect. Twitter and Instagram, through the use of hashtags, let large groups of people participate in awareness campaigns, fundraisers, and spreading of news. Still other sites like Tumblr, deviantArt, and YouTube allow communities to form around different kinds of media, and are platforms for creators to showcase multiple kinds of content from writing to videos to various kinds of art. Despite some of the drawbacks, ultimately social media and the communities they foster are in fact beneficial to society as a whole. Having access to communication and content from around the world through these social networks also allows for a cultural exchange. Through social media, friends from across both countries and oceans can stay in contact, much like pen pals but nearly instantaneous. New friends can also be made through various means. When interacting with other people from other places, a person can learn a lot about those places and what they are like. In a personal example, I have learned more about rural life from conversing with my friend in Georgia, and have learned about European culture through interactions with online friends from England, Sweden, and Norway. I have also, on occasion, adapted features of a dialect of a place
Society’s dependence on a vast array of information and communication technology has not only changed the way we communicate but has also reinvented social activism. Social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook and forum websites like Reddit has given digital activism more potential than ever before to create real change. Whether the activism pertains to political, social or economic changes–digital technology allows individuals working collectively to achieve a common purpose with more ease in their pursuit of change.
Social media has become a major form of communication in this day and age. It is available to all age groups. “The opportunities for adolescents to form and maintain relationships on the Internet have multiplied in the past few years” (Valkenburg, Peter, & Schouten, 2006). Users can be found throughout the world that accesses social media to connect with friends and family. This use of technology has become a major source of communication. Social media has taken over the way we communicate with each other. I prefer to communicate with people on social media instead of sending SMS messages. Although there are many different social media sites we have access to, Facebook has become the go-to website for many social media users. My favorite social media platform is Facebook.
Many people have described the Internet as “a whole new world.” From Facebook to Google, there are a multitude of ways to connect with others and acquire information like never before. According to Pew Research Center, seventy-six percent of social media users in the United States use Facebook daily (Social Media Fact Sheet). That is an immense amount of connections and information being shared. The United States has made many technological advancements for the good, however, the United States has given up their privacy for safety and convenience.
Social media is a very big deal in today's society, teenagers use it to socialize, find information and for entertainment. The first thing we could find on social media is really nice comments on teens photos. The second thing we could find is teens speaking out and being heard. Social media is helpful to teens because it boosts their confidence and lets teens have a voice. Despite this, some people say social media leads to cyberbullying, but only a small percent of teens said it made them feel less.
Nowadays, a lot of people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler and so on. Since the Internet has propagated rapidly, social media have progressed a lot. The generalization of the internet makes us to live conveniently and fast. People are almost using smart phones, i-phones or comfortable devices which can access to internet. These equipments make us to do social network easily. It helps contact friends, family, and other people even though they live far away. It could be, however, abused, if you don’t use properly. Especially, it is important that we understand and regulate the use of social media by young children.
As a child grows up, everything they are exposed to affects their personality and shapes them into their own person. The schools they attend, the television shows they watch, and the people they are around can influence their ideology of the world and their place in it. Some people view social media (YouTube, Instagram, Musical.ly, Snapchat, etc.) as a good way to distract their children and keep them entertained, but children should not be allowed to spend a majority of their time on social media accounts. Some parents may argue that they should not shield their children from reality, but it is important to reduce the amount of social media children are exposed to, in order to reduce the amount of biased information and prejudice they may have.
Human beings need to feel connected with family and friends to provide us with the needed emotional support (Harris). Social media offers an easy way to stay in connected with many different types of people. We can stay connected with others regardless of where they live. It is being used in many different ways, such as socializing, exchanging ideas, sharing creativity, and collaborating with others.
Our society has become heavily reliant on social media, and today’s younger generation cannot avoid using it in their everyday lives. As time has progressed, social media has advanced significantly, becoming easier to access with a touch of a button. These advancements provide both positive and negative consequences to youths’ relationships. Due to the rapid advancement of social media, youths’ real-life relationships with their peers have been affected both positively and negatively.
In our present society, people are continuously making this world more accessible. Time and distance is not an obstacle in communicating with each other. We are using technology to maintain and strengthen our familial relationships. we also use technology to understand other cultures and meet people all around the world. Mobile technology made it easier for more people to maintain social life online. But, in spite of making us more social or socially active, these technologies are causing the opposite. In many cases, this is a malicious curse. Use of technology is one of the most compelling reasons for the social awkwardness of this millennia.

A 41- year- old mother and her baby were driving through Beaumont, Texas during hurricane harvey when they got stuck in high waters. A bystander saw them floating in a canal and called 911, help was on it’s way immediately. The mother saved the baby's life because she was trying to hold her up as high as she could. They were in very cold water and the baby was suffering from hypothermia. They were rushed to the hospital. Sadly, the mom died but the baby survived. If the women wasn’t informed by social media that there would be first responders out to save her, she would have never left her car and they would have both drowned. This true story, from USA Today, raises the question: Does social media help better inform citizens? Social media alerts you whenever someone is in need for help. About 71% of girls are on social media most of the day so it is very easy to reach out to them.
“People are willing to risk taking a life and ruining their own because they don’t want to be alone for a second.”
Social media is defined as being a series of websites and apps that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. However authors such as Derek Thompson view social media as a “virus” that is spreading across the generations. My generation specifically has been affected the most by social media since we are more emotionally invested in the content on social media instead of with one another. Social media is information that is“,spread in short bursts and die quickly” The author Sherry Turkle theorizes that social media is standing between the ability to make meaningful conversations. As a result of the diminishing of genuine conversations there is a decrease in people's ability to empathize with others thus causing more youths to lose their sense of identity. Social media has changed how we as a generation see ourselves as individuals. Turkle states from one of her interviews that “,all interactions, certainly, have an element of performance. But online, she feels involved in her performances to the point that she has lost track of what is performance and what is not.” (24). Turkle is essentially stating that social media has caused us to place masks upon our true identity. We wear these masks to meet this idea of perfection and because of this, we no longer know who we truly are. We have lost ourselves behind the masks. Social media is becoming a virus of perfection giving my generation a skewed view of who they should be and what
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. What do these four sites have in common? They are all social media platforms.
