Animal Testing “Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures...”(Einstein). Every year, an immense number of animals are unwillingly subjected to testing in laboratories across the United States. If action is not taken, millions of lab animals will continue to die and suffer not only in America, but universally. Animal testing stems all the way back to the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Arabs, and has since then expanded into a global issue (Scutti). Currently, more than 26 million animals are used for product development and drug testing, as well as medical research (“Should”). Many, if not most, of these lab tests

Also, the practice has produced many treatments necessary in saving human lives. For example, the discovery of the polio vaccine reduced global instances of the disease from 350 thousand cases in 1988 to 223 in 2012 (“Should”). Considering over 371 million people worldwide have diabetes (Castillo), the invention of insulin has saved countless lives since its discovery. Animal testing has also offered a better understanding of conditions such as tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, many types of cancer like leukemia and breast cancer, and countless other diseases (“Should”). Not only does animal research yield lifesaving medical treatments and advancements, the animals involved are protected by various laws and regulations. The most prominent of these laws is the Animal Welfare Act, or AWA, which has been in effect since 1966. Not only does the AWA regulate the types of animals tested on, it also requires minimum housing standards for the research animals. For instance, all lab animals must be provided with a suitable enclosure size, fresh food and water, and a comfortable habitat temperature (“Should”). Furthermore, all persons requesting to use animals for experimentation must have their request approved by their facility’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, or IACUC. All facilities are also required to employ veterinarians, animal care specialists, and animal health technicians to best insure considerate treatment of the lab animals (“Should”). While living in poor conditions is mainly bad for the animals, it also affects the results of the experiments themselves. Neglected animals produce inaccurate test results, due to many of their characteristics only being observable if they are contented, meaning humane treatment of lab animals is better for the researchers as
Animals, whether cats in the house or lions on the savannah, reserve the right to life. The disregard for animal life has been equated to racism or sexism; acting on principles of disrespect for life and thoughts of discrimination (Animal Testing and Ethics). The continuation of animal testing and experimentation take an enormous psychological toll on humanity, leading to rationalization and flawed justification. To carry on this path would darken the mark this animal abuse is currently leaving on our humanity, one step towards yet another fault in human nature.
Have you ever had a sick relative? If so, have they used medication to help with said illness? Well that medication had to have come from somewhere. Animal testing has help conduct products such as vaccines for smallpox, hypothermia, and other major diseases. Now take into consideration what might have happened to that relative without the medication. As you can tell, animal testing has a positive impact on society, despite what might be claimed to be unjust. I will be explaining why this is so, and how some of the arguments are irrelevant.
Animals protected by the Animal Welfare Act, the only federal law passed that regulates animal testing, make-up 10 percent of the animals tested, (About the Issue). At first, these animals - mice, rats, and birds - were considered being protected, but a 2002 Amendment declared they do not count as warm-blooded animals, resulting in 90 percent of tested animals not protected under the Animal Welfare Act (About the Issue). This Amendment did, however, require a record of a number of animals being tested on, but it is not regulated so those reports do not get submitted. Committees that document animal misconduct are unable to intervene in the experiment if they believe mistreatment is present in the experiment, but instead have to submit a report that takes more time to reach the powers able to stop the experiment than the amount of time it takes to perform the experiment. The discard towards this issue has left enforcers powerless as well as participating in the experimentations that occur. Animal experiments are usually used for determining how a product will affect a human being, but experiments also can be rewarded with research grant awards that will fund other future experiments. In order to lessen the number of experiments animals need to be part of, most experiments can be replaced with non-animal alternatives. The transition from animals to alternative testing strategies, however, is a risky process: testing animals and determining the effect the tests have on humans is already a guess, but using other methods that are not as popular and scientists are not as familiar with creates a potential threat to the experiments being conducted. Because of this threat and without the experiments being regulated, the use of animals in testing in federally-funded labs
Mohandas K. Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. What, then, does it say about the people of the United States, for allowing the deaths of millions of innocent animals for the benefit of research, that in most cases is not even useful? 100 million animals are killed each year due to animal testing or experimentation (PETA,1). In the past, it was acceptable to use animal testing for scientific research, but now that there are other viable alternatives to the testing of innocent animals, such as in-vitro, stem cell testing, non-incasing imaging techniques, and micro-dosing. Animal testing should only be used in cases where said drug or treatment will treat life-threatening diseases. Animal testing in this day and age is both unnecessary and cruel, as there are multiple alternatives and the most of the time is not useful in human research.
Many of you see animal testing as cruel and inhumane, I was one that viewed it that way
Chimps are put in this cage for years and has no food and water. A chimp is used every day for research. It was my first day as a scientist in a company that they offered me a job. I was going as in an undercover as an FBI. As soon as I walked in saw chimps being tested on. They were sending me undercover because peopled were filing reports about it and they were denning it. The senior professor told me to do my first job. He told me to give shots to the chimps and she what happened as I did that the chimps were afraid to came near me. As I walked down the hall they were all going to the back of the cage of how scared they were. The professor didn’t want to tell me what the shot did because he feared of my reaction. But I had already an Idea
There is no denying that animal testing has led to many medical discoveries which have saved many lives. The first pancreases taken from dogs directly led to the discovery of insulin, which has saved many diabetics’ lives. This discovery is the back-bone to allowing animal testing to continue because it is proof that animal testing can lead to lives being saved. Animal testing is a controversy that has lasted for over 30 years, and it will continue to be the center of many debates until an equivalent form of testing is discovered that no longer puts animals in the line of fire. But until that day arrives, the question still stands. Should animals be used as test subjects? Though there are two answers to this question, each making logical points, I say that animals should no longer be used.
What if the world stopped testing on animals? What if they started testing on humans? What if a family member of yours died from a non-tested product? All of this could happen because people think using animals for testing is inhumane. Human deaths due to unsafe products may also be inhumane. People should continue with animal testing for medical purposes.
Animal testing is when researchers use animals to test out the effects of drugs and diseases. Sadly, this is something that ordinary people may not be aware of the awful things innocent animals endure behind closed doors in laboratories for scientist or researchers own personal gain. Animal testing has been practiced for centuries. It wasn’t until modern day century that others have realized how inhumane animal testing is and have protested against this act so much that it has caused the U.S. government to pass laws that prohibit and protect many animals from lab testing cruelty. Even when a law is made to protect them laboratory researchers still use mice as a benefit for their studies. A writer from an article that opposes animal testing has said that animals get anxiety when a laboratory researcher enters the room. It is also shown that they can develop other mental disorders as a result of the testing.
Throughout history animals have been used for biomedical research and commercial testing, but has recently become severely criticized and banned in multiple countries. Millions of animals are locked inside cages across the nation waiting in fear of what next painful procedure they must go through. Determining whether the act is morally acceptable or not has been up for debate since 500 BC when philosophers Aristotle and Bentham shared their viewpoints. Aristotle believed that animals were below humans and therefore could be used for human sake, while Bentham believed that both animals and humans have rights that shall be considered. The topic of animal testing typically arouses emotion and is two sided. While analyzing this topic, I will reference
Another argument made by supporters of animal testing is that alternative methods are not adequate enough for companies to feel confident putting a product on the market. Cheryl Wischhover quotes the executive vice president of government affairs at the Personal Care Products Council in her article saying, “the FDA hasn’t approved many alternative testing methods that would satisfy their requirements on the safety of certain ingredients,” so this makes it harder for companies to trust in alternative methods (Wischhover). The FDA themselves state that though they do not require animal testing for safety, “the agency has consistently advised cosmetic manufacturers to employ whatever testing is appropriate and effective for substantiating the
Without animal testing there would be thousands of drugs, vaccines, or surgeries to cure animals and people that we would’ve never even known about. With animal testing we don’t have to worry about, if a product works or not because it has gone through a series of test for our safety. Animal testing is also a very debatable subject on whether it should be continued or not. Animal testing should be continued because no one wants to take the risk of an untested product and there are plenty of new medical advancements being made from it.
Animal research is a practice that dates back to ancient Greece used by physician-scientists like Aristotle. One cannot deny that throughout the history of this practice, researchers have treated animals poorly. However, in the modern era of science, researchers understand the poor treatment of animals, is both unethical and counterproductive to advances in science. Scientists now follow guidelines set for what is the fair and humane treatment of animals used in research, as well as when the use of animals is ethical. Undoubtedly, there are times when animal research may seem unjustified as the experiment are not designed to increase mankind’s knowledge in a way that will further improve the world, but these occasions are few and “whenever
Whenever people buy any chemical products, have they ever thought how can manufacturers guarantee the fail-safety of these products? A million of animals are killed or disabled with complete impunity is an answer for their safety; Therefore, these poor animals have been tested in several experiments throughout the world. However, most of these unkind activities performed in the laboratories are so ruthless we will never image one human doing it to another animal. As an animal right, many people feel that animal testing may have bad influences on them. In this essay, it will be contended that animal testing should be banned because it is so cruel, unnecessary and does not always provide satisfactory treatments for human’s illnesses.
Experiments on animals are increasing day by day. Some people think that it is right to do experiments on creatures where as other people believed that subjecting animals for the purpose of human life is not justice. I am strongly argue that animal testing is morally wrong, I would like to support limited amount of trails on animal beings is acceptable for the development of medicines.
