Armed police officers create discrimination?
Do you think police officers should be armed if their job is to protect schools? Many will argue yes because of safety reasons, but what if that leads to bigger problems? This has been a debate for years and has caused to create many rules that have or have not worked. For example the Gun-Free schools Act or the zero-tolerance policies. Although it protects students and can create a safe and secure environment, police officers in schools should not be armed because it can create discrimination, officers will feel with more power and authority, and take away student’s education.
However, many might think police officers should be armed in case of an emergency. There has been many incidents where shootings occurs at schools and the police officer’s job is to protect themselves and the lives of students and staff at any cost. You can argue this to be a good reason to allow police officers to carry weapons. They feel they should be armed for protection, but many police officers take advantage of that and feel they have the power to do anything, even to break a law. It is not right for police officers to think they can break laws because everyone is equal and having armed police officers will damage students in other ways.
Police officers do contribute to an environment of discrimination. Immigration has been a big problem in our society because people like Donald Trump, for example, think immigrants got here to destroy the country.
Teachers should not be allowed to carry a concealed weapon in school even if it is registered and the teacher has had training with firearms. However, with a recent jump in school shootings many officials are debating implementing armed teachers. If educators carry firearms, schools will no longer be a safe trusted place to learn, firearms and their liabilities would be a great cost to the school, and it would be easy access for someone, namely the students, to steal the weapons.
You go to school to be educated by your teachers and peers. It brings unnecessary tensions and can cause problems. Students, teachers, and other staffs shouldn’t be able to bring guns to school. Who’s to say that person carrying around an assault weapon doesn’t have an unstable problem? We don’t know what is on someone’s mind or what they are capable of. Anyone could be having a bad day and decide to threaten someone with a gun. These kinds of circumstances should be made clear to the public and be banned from educational schools. Guns are used as protection, but they may be misapplied to be used as violence. There are more rational ways we could go about this such as; investing in more security guards or police enforcement. Needless to say, guns are dangerous especially when in the hands of a deadly person. What's more important, the second amendment or the lives of our teachers and students? Ultimately guns have no place to be in or around a school
My second reason as to why teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon is that it has worked for other countries. Israel and Thailand actually encourage their teachers to carry weapons. There was an article in 2004 in the National Review that is about how Israel and Thailand are set examples of arming teachers. The article stated that, “Though Thailand’s government is extremely hostile to gun ownership in general, it has recognized that teachers ought to be able to safeguard their students and themselves.” I agree with this. Teachers should be allowed to protect their students and themselves and if allowing the teachers to carry a concealed weapon will protect them then let them do it. The article also stated that, “Terrorist attacks on schools and school children could almost be completely eliminated in a very short time.” There are examples of attacks on schools that have failed. In
Teachers and other administrators should be trained and required to carry firearms to school. There are many school shootings happening around the world. Teachers carrying firearms could protect their students, fellow teachers, and themselves from being harmed. Teachers will be able to react more quickly while waiting for law enforcement to arrive at the scene. Having teachers and administrators carrying guns will also give students a feeling of safety and security.
The security during the massacre at Columbine High School was minimal. Senator Dianne Feinstein said “There were two armed law enforcement officers at that campus, and you see what happened. Fifteen dead ... 23 wounded.” There was one officer at Columbine who was a 15-year veteran of the Jefferson County, Colorado with the name of Deputy Neil Gardner and another officer, Deputy Paul Smoked, who was a patrolman, both whom were armed. This is where the debate on how to protect schools began (Terkel). “The governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, said he doesn’t think that having armed police officers at a school will make it safer or encourage learning. The NRA’s top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said, “Having armed security on the scene is necessary so someone is there to shoot back. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun
Many students in America, might consider school almost like a home because they spend about half a day in. We need students to be safe at school, so why not have an officer patrolling the hallways. To make the school much safer, the officers should have guns in case there is a threat towards the students. In the eyes of many United State citizens a gun can symbolize death; however, a gun can save several people’s lives. As U.S citizens, we have the right to keep and bear arms, so why do we not have police officers with guns patrolling schools. “Gun violence is a major social issue in America and American schools and university campuses have become targets of gun violence” (Bond). In the U.S we had several severe situations when someone comes to the school and starts to kill not only students, but teachers and staff, this could have been prevented if we were prepared and secured. Although the opposition may suggest it could be more dangerous to have an officer or guard be allowed with a gun; however, having an officer with a gun would decrease the number of shootings and other minor problems at schools.
But as in every argument there are very few reason to not be armed, but as in this situation the why’s weight out the why not’s. The way teachers, right now, are acting when a shooter comes in, is cowardly. The students are more willing to risk their lives to save their friends, that is true courage. But the student is unarmed, literally bringing a fist to a gun fight, if the teacher was armed that could change the game of how the shooting could play out. Either the teacher wins fighting hard, or the teacher dies cowardly. Teachers should be armed for the sake of themselves, piers, and students. Would you rather die fighting hard, or die coward
The reason why the school shooting problem is a load of crap with the people that own guns is because the people who make these horrible choices have mental problems and could not get the correct help that they needed. Out of a recent survey from propublica.org 61.5% of the school shooters have a substance abuse problem. 43.5 % of the shooters were victims of bullying. This concludes that many of the people that decided to do these horrible things like school shooting have had problems in the past that affected them mentally, and if they chose taking innocent students lives as a solution, they had a mental problem and did not get the correct help. Not every homeowner that has a gun in their house is going to go shoot up a school. Its also true that the police need guns to protect themselves. Police using these guns are using them as self protection. They do not just do a drive by on people or kill anyone without a reason. They are here to protect the people and the town so they need weapons on them to be able to protect every
Whether or not armed security guards should be in schools has been a debate for years but has really been brought into the limelight since the most recent tragedies of Columbine, Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook. The supporters of having armed security in our school districts believe that it is a needed layer of security and helps to diminish response time if necessary while keeping children, parents and teachers feeling safer to be in school. The ones against having guns in the schools believe that we have had armed guards in schools and it did nothing to stop it. They also believe that the cost is too high while also
A school's staff are our children's first and foremost defense against violent attacks. Posting "Gun Free Zone" signs has proven time and time again, that it will not stop a criminal from leaving a trail of victims. Leaving our staff untrained and unarmed ultimatley leaves all those in the school vulnerable, defenseless, and in the position to potentially be harmed, or worse, killed. Arming our teachers, prinicipals, and staff will give our children and all else in the school a chance to fight for their lives, if ever threatned.
Police departments across the country and their actions of their employees have been scrutinized a lot lately in the media. Not only the way their employees behave but the way they recruit potential employees. Police officers take an oath to protect the communities that they serve in and uphold the constitution no matter what race, gender or ethnicity. With that being said, police officers should also be made up of people of different genders, races, and ethnicities.
So yes, legally teachers have the right to be armed if their school board agrees with it and certifies. But why would they want to arm them? Yes, to protect our students but there is just so much that would cause issues. Law enforcement only has an 18% accuracy rating when the opposite opponent is firing back according to the RAND Corporation’s evaluation of the New York Police department. It shows that even a highly trained professional law enforcement officer has trouble shooting a suspect in highly stressful
When it comes down to it, what does everybody pointing guns at each other solve? Do we really want more people to get hurt than needed to? The job of teachers is to teach, not to guard the school. Schools should hire trained armed officers to do that job. Teachers should not be required to carry concealed weapons because of the dangers that it can cause to the school’s safety, the inexperience some have with weapons and the negative message doing so might send to children.
Student protection is the main reason supporters advocate for teachers to carry concealed weapons in school. However, students don’t want firearms on school grounds. In a survey conducted by DoSomething.org, seven out of ten students said they would feel less safe with a firearm in the building. At Texas A&M, 57% of the students enrolled voted against teachers carrying weapons. Also, students are safe at school already, 93% of violence against college students happens off campus (Huffington Post, Students Don’t Want It).
Police agencies are becoming more accustomed to hiring police officers of all cultures and ethnicities. However, like most careers an individual will choose to pursue there is always the possibility of them being discriminated against. A common type of discrimination police officers face is one based on their race or ethnicity. An officer is likely might experience racial discrimination in the form of harassment in the workplace. An example of this is a co-worker using racial slurs or unfavourable remarks towards an individual. Another form of discrimination in the workplace is the degrading of an individual based on their race or ethnicity, suggesting that their race or ethnicity is what got them here and not their hard work.
