“Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it's really how it works”—Steve Jobs. Many of us undergo some sort of creative adventure, whether it’s within ourselves or the world surrounding us. We take in different elements to form some sort of masterpiece that expresses whatever we’re feeling or what we want others to feel. Art, that’s what we call it. Or do we call it design? Which brings up the question, isn’t it both? Both designers and artists create visuals, but for entirely different reasons. There is a clear severance between the two creative worlds, the critical thinking, lack of self expression and formulated structure leads one to say that design is not art and art is not design. Designers live to constantly question and propose a solution to whatever problem is catching their eye. Problems are made to be fixed, and designers are addicted to doing so. Of course designers are aware that there is never one solution to an issue/problem, but that is what ignites the burning passion underneath these creative souls. There are countless hours considering the various solutions to just one problem. Critically analyzing one by one, searching for that answer that best suits the dilemma at hand. Art on the other hand requires a little less analyzation. Typically the two share one thing and that is a message; However, the difference is that art is presenting a form of expression and design is presenting a solution
Our beliefs, time, money, and actions are all being fought over with design as the arsenal. The graphic designer learns how to participate in this fight through education, intuition, creativity, and technical skills. Though helpful, a formal education in design is not what is meant here. The education needed is more about understanding the previously mentioned rules we are working with. Intuition is required in order to know when it is appropriate to adjust or disregard these rules. Creativity is needed because redundancy will not break through the wall into the internal world. Technical skills are essential because poor craft reduces credibility. This idea of the world as an arena is a reoccurring theme in The Cheese Monkeys, and the importance of education, intuition, creativity, and technical skills have been further reinforced to us through the grading process and classroom discussions in Graphic Design
Design has become one of my greatest passions in my life, one that I never grow tired of and constantly wish to improve upon. This is why I chose to become a graphic design major, so that I could constantly interact and learn about design even once I enter the career force. Design is a puzzle that when solved correctly can reach people like words could never do. I have known that I would enter a creative field since a child, though it wasn’t till recent years that my love of graphic design truly blossomed.
But in contemporary society, there is no single definition that covers design completely, or even fields of professional practice as graphic or industrial design that adequetly cover the diversity of ideas and practices as once existed. Art is the theme of art, this means that the main reason artist design different types of art works is to bring about the visual satisfaction. One of the major reason as to why artist paint, draw or design their works is to have something to have look at. Therefore, before a viewer analyses a piece of art, he or she has to look at it as the first and foremost
Through the discovery of advertisements, stock photography and semiotics, I have seen that design goes far beyond aesthetics and pleasing the eye, design affects societies and has the power to change cultures. I believe that I have demonstrated that design is a complex field of study with many aspects, including that of sociology and shaping the way in which society continues to
An “Essay on the Influence of the Art of Design” by William Dunlap compelling argues the critical importance and influence of art on the modern day society. A main aspect of his argument is that art, “…will perpetuate knowledge and prevent a second deluge of barbarism….” (p190) Dunlap believes that art enhances society, he claims that, ‘Before the benign influence shed upon him by the fine arts, man existed; he can scarcely be said to have lived, as man.” (p190) This is similar to the argument given by Robert Morse in his review by stating that art, “…should rank the highest which requires the greatest exercise of the mind….” (p177)

Humans have a long history of expressing ourselves through medium for varying reasons that have not always had to do with survival. We as a species have continued to try and portray our visons from inside the mind to the tangible world for our fellow beings by using drawings. There are a multitude of ways that the mind can reach our world. Some ways are seen as more familiar than others. If there are more familiar ways, then there is also a less familiar way. The fine arts such as art are what separates a satirical essay from a Grecian statue. Jeanette Winterson examines what art means to in our larger society and how to learn to truly appreciate and experience art.
Design is what I called the spreading of my mind. It is the act that I use in my day to day
In its simplest form, graphic design is the harmony between art and text. Problem solving and emphasis on thought are some examples of what it can do. Through my education at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte I have learned all the ways I can create art and challenge my viewers. Once I become a young professional I envision that my contribution to the design field will be a unique one based on a collaboration of my education and experiences. Several graphic designers including David Carson and Paula Scher have inspired me along the way and influenced different ideals within my work.
I believe art a door to a another dimension because it can put you can a zone, it can change your mood, and art has a way of expressing yourself. For example I remember the time when I had to do my chores. I was absolutely dreading washing the dishes. So, to pass time, I decided to listen to music.
The second concept of design is described as an "artistic term". This is seen as free, inventive, and unthought of. This design evolved from the appearance of patterns with variation of course, suggesting a predictability to the universe. An "artistic" design is composed of image, color, and tone; elements of artistic creation or design. It allows not simply for rational mathematical analysis of universe, but for an intuitive interpretation of universe. It
In today’s society, technology and art go hand in hand. Art has been around for a long time but technology such as computers are still very new. These two mediums have comingled and now evolve and effect the other. Art has changed to reflect the vast improvements technology has contributed to communication and the ability to create using digital space. Technology has also changed with artist pushing the boundaries of what is technical possible in the digital realm. Much of today’s art is created and presented in digital formats. The question of whether digital art is truly art has risen among many critics in the art community.
Meredith Davis’s book “Graphic Design Theory” was published in September 2012 by Thames & Hudson. This book blends a study of historical thinking of design with contemporary / modern approach to it. It also suggests students to critically analyse their work and asks them to adopt the design theories to embellish their practical design work as it will help them construct better work. This book also helps in understanding the consumers and the history of Graphic Design and also talks about a range of theories and introduces a collection of concepts and sources for future use and reference. In this book, Meredith Davis talks about the relationship of visual representation to the contexts of design. It talks about focusing on the broad and long term aftereffects of design and not to design only for the moment and responding to prompt needs.
The relationship between art and design has been somewhat complicated and there is no clear picture how the roles of art and design ultimately differ. Some are saying that if design is good enough it becomes art. One great design thinker Kenya Hara has written some very good analysis about the relationship
