Art is not just a picture on a wall or in a museum, art comes in many forms. It can be a song you just heard, a video you watched, or a painting you saw in a gallery. Art can also be just text but no matter what all forms of art grasp you in different ways and make your thoughts evolve to new distances. Art can bring you feelings you did not think you had. This is what an art world truly is, a combination of all the work that was put into the art and how it impacted people’s lives. “Art worlds consist of all the people whose activities are necessary to the production of the characteristic works which that world, and perhaps others as well, define as art” (Becker, p. 34). Becker also says an art world is the network of people whose cooperative activity, organized via their joint knowledge of conventional means of doing things, produce the kind of art works that art world is noted for. An art world is very similar to an industry but the art business is so small that the social factor isn’t strong enough to consider it an industry. The people who create the artwork will see the same people interested in the same artwork at the same art shows, galleries, and other events year after year. In order to have an art world and artwork in it, we need the artists to create art and an audience to critic and appreciate the art. Without an audience there would be no variation in the types of art as the audience has a huge influence in what artists make. For instance, without the reaction
Art galleries are essential to the art world, however, is not the only source for audiences to view art. To begin with, art and artwork is defined as the application of human skill, creativity and imagination. Taking this into consideration, individuals need to examine the nature and purpose of art galleries as a facility to collaborate, organize and display a collection of artworks. As art however, is any expression of human creativity, its presence is not bound to art galleries and is evidently present in the world around us be it in photographs, the internet or even in graffiti.
Art has multiple purposes. Some people enjoy art for the emotional engagement they receive while viewing it. Happy or pretty things give us hope; sad things make us feel less alone in our sadness. Other people see art as a way to balance who they are as a human. Where some people see propaganda others see a reminder of what is truly important in life (Schooloflifechannel). No matter what the reason, art is a vital part of the community not easily forgotten. One thing, however, is constantly on the mind of viewers, and that is the question of what each work of art means beyond the superficial, to the language only truly understood by the human soul. Art communicates, not by audible words, but instead by symbols and metaphors that can be so
When I was reading your response to this week’s discussion, I noticed you made some important points that I agreed with. We both agree on the belief that architecture is and should be considered art. You mentioned in your response, that there are buildings globally that hold a historic artful meaning or appearance. I could not agree with you more, our book is filled with pictures of historic architectures that have beautiful art sculptures, paintings, images, and much more on them. Architecture I believe is another form of self-expression and another art form. According to our book, “Exploring Art: A Global, Thematic Approach,” written by Margaret Lazzari and Dona Schlesier, states that, “The designs of individual homes embodied climate concerns, aesthetic preferences, and cultural choices” (Lazzari and Schlesier 128). This quote to me means, that the art is present in architecture. The structure of the home is being built according to the owner’s likings and cultural beliefs. Which in other words is an example of architecture being self-expressed.
Art has been a factor of our life as long as humanity has existed. For thousands of years, art has been created, observed, critiqued, and enjoyed by human beings in many regions across the world. Art aren’t just murals, sculptures, music, books or anything that someone may define as art but more of a bigger picture like if has a deeper meaning such a message or a theme that is looked upon. Art can be viewed at as many different ways in terms of people having different reactions or observing it in a different meaning. Someone could feel that the art work is very extraordinary and unique but someone else can have a different reaction and feel like it is no different than other artworks and have a literalist view upon the art. One art that made
Art is something that can be described and expressed in several different ways to communicate ideas and emotions through visualizations. Through art we are able to see the world like never before. It inspires and motivates us to be creative. We are able to think further and beyond. In addition, art gives us the ability to understand what artists are trying to display and the messages they are trying to convey through their works. Art can be found anywhere and created by anyone (Dewitte, Larmann, and Shields 29-30).
The idea of art being a unique interpretation of what an artist’s feels towards a particular thing has always been a given when talking about art. However, where is the line drawn on what art truly is and what it means to its audience? To do this, the idea of what art means must be applied to the idea of what art is. In Dorothy Allison’s This is Our World, the author touches on points of what art is and what it means to its viewers. These points and supporting stories point to the idea that art is subjective, personal, and provocative. This allows Allison to draw her conclusion that arts purpose is to depict the deeper meaning into situations and incidents that occur in our world. In Dorothy Allison’s journal, one can see how the author effectively conveys the ideas of art being personal and subjective, but fails at detailing how art can be subjective.
The Importance of Art A lot of people have mixed feelings on what the true definition of what art actually is. In a dictionary, it is defined as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” () Art plays a very important role in our society. It comes in many different forms and it can be found anywhere and everywhere around us.
Throughout history, art has changed and transformed dramatically as empires have fallen and new civilizations have formed. There have been many different forms of art and extremely different tastes of art based on which civilization you decide to focus on. According to this opinion, out of all the different types of art, “the highest form of art is realism.” The writer then claims how many civilizations have undergone intellectual and creative declines when creating unrealistic art. This, of course, is simply an opinion, but the the thoughts and ideas of this writers bring up many intriguing questions about art and how society perceives art.
Art is important to culture and our society. Society is culture, or more accurately, society is the people who make up a
In today’s world, art carries a huge role in our lives as it surrounds us. It forces us to think critically and in different ways based on what’s in front of us, such as shocking, fascinating, and impressing our minds. It’s just a simple way of displaying color and style in order to force us to try and figure out what their message is. Art is not only about showing self-expression, but it also helps bring a population of people closer and promotes team building skills, such as building up long lasting relationships. It encourages people to contribute to the world so they can be remembered for doing something big. It is also a powerful way to communicate with others. If you were to travel to a whole different place where you didn’t understand
One definition that has been strongly attached to art during current years has been that of Tolstoy, in which complicated masterpieces, worth thousands of dollars are only created and appreciated for the purpose of communicating an idea to an elite group. For those that are not part of this elite group, it becomes really hard to understand how art moved from being one of the most basic forms of communication to a complicated cognitive process where only a specific group of people are exposed to it and are able to comprehend a message cohesive in it. For these people outside of this elite group and which are not in accordance with the current definition, art is defined by how Susan Langer defines it. A practice of creating perceptible forms of expressing or communicate human feelings which have been part of us and not just for the use of a narrow group since our earliest times. One popular evidence for this definition are the prints on rocks and stones scattered across several continents made by tribes of Neanderthals in an effort to communicate with other tribes. Old songs, relics, and monuments from ancient times are some of the other forms art has also evolved and helped us to communicate. It is this constant evolution and discovery of new forms of art that transforms the mentality and
Art is an integral part of any human society. It has the ability to mold and shape
Art is a catalyst of change. It can confront both social and political issues as well as providing people with a creative outlet in which they can express their innermost thoughts and feelings - but what effect can art have on our society as a whole? Artists today have the unique ability to connect with people in a creative, innovative way that they can understand and interpret themselves. With this ability, artists are able to express their own views as well as influencing the views of others. Art is an immense part of our world – so much so that we barely even consider its impact upon us – but just how significant is the work of artists in our modern day society?
Public art plays a very important role in our society; it has existed in a variety of ways across the world to provide us the opportunity to express ourselves. It is a part of our daily lives and can have enormous meaning to the different existing cultures in the world. Art gives us the opportunity to show others what we feel, what we think, what we hope, what we love or hate, what we want to change, how we visualize the future and what motivate us. As humans we have the natural necessity to express those feelings, our thoughts and to be understood by others.
Arthur C. Danto in “The Artworld” provides us with the argument that, “To see something as art requires something that the eye cannot descry-an atmosphere of artistic theory, a knowledge of the history of art: an artworld.” Danto shows us the importance of the artworld in order to know that a work of art is more than just what we can plainly see. Danto provides two theories he calls the “IT” (Imitation theory) and the “RT” (Reality theory). With these two theories, Danto explains how we can define art and why “The Artworld” is needed to help understand art, because after all, “these days one might not be aware he was on artistic terrain without an artistic theory to tell him so.”
