I have chosen to major in art therapy at Alverno College. The area I would like to specialize in is geriatrics, more specially alzheimer’s and other dementias. Originally, I had been an education major however after doing some work in the field, I found I don’t enjoy children. Currently, I work in a nursing home and that is where I found my love of the elderly. Upon graduating with a bachelor's degree from Alverno, I would like to work in either a nursing home/assisted living facility or hospice center. In these settings, a career in the activities department would most likely occur. I plan on working for two to five years after graduating Alverno in one of those facilities. After that, I plan on applying to as well as attending graduate school.
I believe that my prior work and school related experiences allow me to stand out above other future occupational therapy assistants. I am currently in school obtaining a bachelor's degree in psychology. Throughout the past three years I have taken classes not only in the field of psychology but also anatomy and physiology, biology, and chemistry. I strongly believe that the time I spent while obtaining a bachelor's degree and focusing on healthcare classes will allow me to do exceptionally well in the occupational therapy field. Since I have taken many undergraduate classes while obtaining a psychology degree, I have taken many of the classes that are incorporated into the coursework at zane state, therefore I will have less classes to take

Becoming an Occupational Therapy Assistant has been one of my big ambitions for years now. I have worked hard to make sure that this is what I wanted to do with my life. I have a passion to help people. I am a very family and church-oriented person. I have been on many mission trips, such as going to Haiti and even more near by Show-Me Youth Home, in Barnett, Missouri, and to see what I could do with this degree is exciting!
I am pursuing a Medical Assistant Associate in Applied Science degree. I choose this major because the field of work I want to be in is more hands on. I want to be in the action, where I can be doing multiple things and always be on the move. My career goals are to graduate from Berkeley College, move on to my internship, then choose a facility to work at. As I am working as a medical assistant (MA), I would like to continue my career and go back to school, and become a registered nurse (RN). I want to learn and experience different situations to gain more knowledge. Once I become a RN, I would like to continue my education and go back to school for Advance Practice Nursing. My personal goal is to develop great communication skills. I want

After I finish the Master of Occupational Therapy program, I plan on applying at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, which is one of America’s leading children’s hospitals, or apply at the Oregon Department of Veteran’s Affairs. While I am considering furthering my education by obtaining my doctorate degree, I would probably have to focus on work for a year first and try to master the profession. Another alternative for me if given a chance is to continue working at Tuality Healthcare, which specializes in geriatric psychiatry.
Art has been my passion since childhood. Spending three years within the teaching environment was where I thought I belonged. Before receiving my Bachelor of Fine Art in painting from Metropolitan State University of Denver a personal experience that connects to my reservation and adoption into the Clinical Mental Health program was one of tragic loss. On January 9, 2002, my son’s life abruptly ended and during the grieving process I started expressing myself through painting. In searching for serenity, individual counseling became enhance. Finding a therapist with a background in marriage and family/art therapy became a visual depiction, a self-portrait symbolizing my external realities and internal emotions immediately following his suicide. Driven to face an extremely irritating and stressful paradox to the best of my ability while trying to keep the constitutional need to endure my life as fully as possible.
The career path I have chosen to enter upon the completion of my college major is in Occupational Therapy Assistance. Occupational Therapy is the medical treatment for people who are limited by mental health problems, the aging process, physical injury or illness, and learning or developmental disabilities. An Occupational Therapist Assistant, or OTA, is the assistant to the Occupational Therapists, or OT, and assists him or her in providing Occupational Therapy treatments and procedures. An Occupational Therapist Assistant may also assist in the development of treatment plans, direct activity programs, carry out routine functions, and document the progress of patients’ treatments. OTs and OTAs work together with their patients, and their goal is have their patients regain the highest ability of functionality in their daily lives.
More importantly by obtaining a Masters in Art Therapy I hope to better serve my community and the needs of future clients by broadening my understandings of psychology. I am loyal to a fault, flexible, optimistic, openminded, meet deadlines with grace, passionate, empathetic, eager to learn, a hard worker, and a positive person. These qualities simply graze the surface of who I am, nevertheless I am confident that these characteristics will benefit my aspirations to become an Art
Throughout life one will encounter many experiences and there is a lesson within each of those experiences. Right now as an activity aide in a nursing home my passion is to make sure each and every resident gets some sort of enjoyment out of their day whether it’s from reading the newspaper, having coffee outside or its getting their nails painted. I just want to make sure their day has some activity that they enjoy. My dream job after graduation is to work in a hospital in the palliative care/hospice as a social worker. In this setting I will still get to make
As a psychology student with an extensive background in Fine Arts, I bring a unique perspective to the mental health field. My interest in psychology began with the curiosity regarding the relationship between art and mental health. South Korea, my birthplace, has some of the longest working hours of any country. While working in Korea, I witnessed the results of work-related stress such as depressive mood and anxiety. However, there existed stigma related to mental disorders due to cultural expectations. Rather than visiting professionals in the mental health industry, many ascribed mental instabilities to their lack of willpower. This phenomenon spurred me to consider artistic activities in dealing mental distress. Eventually, I was motivated to study Psychology at Ryerson University; I hope to keep my path toward Art Therapy at Concordia University.
Most forms of therapy are centered on verbal communication. Art therapy, however, breaks that mold and introduces a more creative means of both communicating ideas and learning to grow. The American Art Therapy Association defines art therapy as:
Having a Bachelor’s, in addition to my years of experience, makes me eligible to be promoted to an Operations Manager, or a Director at my current job. I can also be a Billing Manager at a hospital. All of which are careers I am interested in. The final plan in my academic future is to earn my Master’s Degree in Social Work. After completion of my Master’s, I can pursue the career of my dreams, a Hospice Social Worker.
