Article I: Intervention effects on tobacco use in Arab and non-Arab American adolescents
1. Title- the title describes the study population, it does not describe the intervention, or variable that be added to both groups. Maybe a better title would have been the effects of using the modified Project Towards No Tobacco (TNT) use program on the tobacco use of Arab and non-Arab American adolescents.
2. Abstract-The problem, increasing adolescent smoking, particularly in Arabs is well described. The method-a quasi-experimental design is also identified. The results and conclusion highlighted the fact that they measured cigarette smoking which the Arab did less of, but did do more water-pipe smoking (Rice, Weglicki, Templin, Jamil, & Hammad,

The Wayne State University Institutional Review Board approved the study methodology and protocol. It is also not clear whether the design minimized risks and maximized benefits, they did tailor the intervention to engage youth, by using an animated PowerPoint and also bilingual health educators (Rice, et al., 2010).
B. Research design- The main problem that I see with this study is that they are using the terms tobacco use and cigarette smoking interchangeable, and they are not. One measures all use of tobacco and the other measures only cigarette smoking. They clearly state that the focus of the study intervention was on cigarette smoking only, even though both cigarettes and water pipe smoking were assessed. The title stated tobacco use, but the intervention focused on cigarette smoking. Why not include all forms of tobacco use in the intervention? Some teenagers do not smoke cigarettes but chew tobacco. Non-Arab students were two-four times more likely to engage in cigarette smoking than their Arab peers. The researchers acknowledge in their discussion the need to modify current tobacco cessation programs to diverse populations. Including diversity and as many forms of tobacco would give catch greatest number of adolescents and have the greatest impact.
C. Population and sample- There were two 10th grade control groups and a 9th grade cohort group, which received the intervention. The design
Statistics on cigarette smoker acutely appearance that over 500,000 humans die every year due to cigarette smoker complications and ailments. Approximately 50,000 humans die every year from accessory smoke effects. The statistics as well appearance that smokers are added acceptable to die 14 years beforehand as compared to non-smokers. This is the acumen why the altercation on the adjustment and accomplishing of a smoker ban has acrimonious up in the contempt days. It is agreeable to agenda that all smokers are acquainted with the dangers of smoking. It is an abnormality that is circuitous to explain. However, addiction can accomplish the smoker’s disciplinarian of the smoke habit. Smokers should apprehend that there are added austere things
· Based on your review of the statistics in the study, do you agree with the study’s conclusions? Why or why not?
The first research article that I chose to discuss is “The natural history of cigarette smoking from adolescence to adulthood in a Midwestern community sample: Multiple trajectories and their psychosocial correlates.” This research extended from 1980-1983. It took place in a county school system in the Midwest. The group for study consisted of 6-12th graders and included those who graduated from the years 1980-1989. The total student’s who were questioned and assessed at least one time was 8,556. A follow up assessment was performed in 1987 at that time 73% of the participants were reevaluated; they were between the ages of 15 and 25. In 1993 another follow up was done; again 73% were reevaluated
2. What data and method does the author use to evaluate this intervention? Why was that data and method used?
The relatable health problem is tobacco use. Tobacco can be used in many ways, but most commonly it is smoked or chewed. I chose this health topic because it is a concerned of mine on how many young adults use tobacco. According to healthy people 2020, “10.9 percent of young adults aged 18 to 25 years who had not previously used tobacco products in their lifetime first used tobacco products in the past 12 months in 2008” This shows that young adults are trying and experimenting at a young age. I will be doing
middle (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students, CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analyzed data from the 2011-2014 National Youth Tobacco Surveys (NYTS). In 2014, e-cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product among middle (3.9%) and high (13.4%) school students. Between 2011 and 2014, statistically significant increases were observed among these students for current use of both e-cigarettes and hookahs (p<0.05), while decreases were observed for current use of more traditional products, such as cigarettes and cigars, resulting in no change in overall tobacco use. Consequently, 4.6 million middle and high school students continue to be exposed to harmful tobacco product constituents, including nicotine.” (Arrazola
Is the title a good one, succinctly suggesting key variables and the study population?
It depends a lot on community leaders as to how much priority they give towards tobacco cessation programs for youths. Awareness of the issue in community is another major factor in success of a program. In some communities and cultures there is lack of public awareness of ill effects of tobacco smoking. Program has to be culturally relevant. The infrastructure has to be great for adolescent smoking interventions. Legislature is weak in controlling tobacco sales. Smoking taxes can be further increased to discourage smoking among youths. There is a lack of local capacity to implement the program in all schools. There is lack of cost data. Staff time in schools need to be considered. Adolescent’s family life and social structure needs to be considered. The reduced budgets of many state tobacco control programs make it difficult to maintain staff and infrastructure (LaPelle, Zapka, & Ockene, 2006). The planning begins by identifying who will use the program: who will adopt it, who will implement it, and who will be responsible for sustaining the program over time. A reassessment of the planning group is necessary to ensure representation of potential program adopters and implementers (Bartholomew et al., 2009. p.506). We’re not able to asses or collect data from the program participants.so the efficacy of the program was
This is a non-experimental study. A non-experimental study is one that measures variables to determine if variables are related to one another. In this case the variables being measured are the guidelines of treatment and also the responses from the professionals that implement said guidelines. Using a non-experimental design is appropriate for this topic of study because a
In Middle East, tobacco use is the second cause of various mortalities where about 45% of the men and about 5% of the women are smokers (Immigrants Minority Health, 2008). Because hookah similarly has a content of tobacco, several deaths have occurred due to throat cancer, asthma, and other infections. Additionally, the condition has led to variability in lifespan amongst the Middle Eastern in comparison with other ethnics in the
Types of participants. Adult e-cigarette users (18 years old and above) are the participants in this review. Both genders were included.
Teens smoking has been a public concern for centuries. In a recent article published earlier this year by Fox News, highlighted the rate and risk of teens smoking and the rise of e-cigarettes. One of the main question posed was, why do teens smoke? There is no definite answer, however; a few intelligible explanation has been given. Biology and developmental vulnerability are the few partially reason given. Biology studies shows that, until in their 20s and adolescents Brain is not equate enough to measure and assess assess race and long-term consequences.one reason is that teen are very vulnerable, which makes them an ideal target for cigarrette companies. luckly the federal government has set strict rules that limit tobacco companies who sets
In this case study, smoking cessation was addressed. Per an article on the CDC website, tobacco use remains the largest preventable cause of death and disease in the
Study Design: This was a randomize and quasi-randomized where the author discusses at public meetings, through radio or leaflets.
X students participated in the study. Participants from this study range in age from X years and X months to X years and 0 months. The mean age is X years and X months. X students participated in the study. X males students and X female students participated in the study. 53.83% of students in the building receive Free and Reduced Lunch. Students were selected for this study because participants were placed on this researcher’s special education classroom roster for the 2017-18 school year. No incentive was given for participation in the study. This is an AB design; therefore, students were not assigned to groups.
