The effects of arts related classes are shown even after the student graduates from high school. These classes guide a student into reaching their full potential by keeping them involved in their classes and in their community. This benefits the pupil because they are less likely to drop out of high school and college and they crave learning and being involved in activities more than the average student. This can be seen in many college students; in their free time in order to relax they turn to a form of the arts such as music or drawing, which will, in turn, lessen their stress allowing for them to be extra prepared to learn more in the weeks, months, and years to come. The gratitude gained from assignments in the arts greatly impact their performance in class. Winner Ellen stated in her article on arts throughout the school day, “from improving their ability to express themselves and honing their creativity, to promoting the value of hard work in achieving certain objectives, arts education can push children and adolescents to become more effective students and, in the long run, can better prepare them to navigate the challenges of the 21st century” (Ellen, Stéphan). Teachers at Fountain Central High School see the arts impact in the performance of students, however most educators do not look for these benefits in their classrooms. (Teachers) Educators are always looking for student improvement. When schools are looking for ways to better their education skills, they often overlook the arts. Arts programs have been rid of some schools simply because they are deemed unnecessary for the students growth in other classes. This is where the educators of today are wrong. Music, dance, drama, painting and drawing teachers try to incorporate academic lessons into their art classes. Students can be learning both art and academic topics at the same time. This can benefit the students extremely because it will not only engage the students in helpful activities, but it will keep them interested in learning the different topics. For example, schools may play music in the halls to introduce the students to culture that may help them to be open to learning new things in all of their classes. The painting teacher may have her student’s paint a picture of a historical event they learned about in their history class and discuss it in front of the class. The music teacher may ask the students to pick a certain song that reminds them of a book they read in their English class and explain to the class why the song reminds them of that certain book. The dance teacher might assign a dance to the students that will get them thinking of a subject to write their paper on for writing class. Budgets cuts are being made to music and art classes in schools across the country. While they are among the most expensive programs for a school to maintain, parents and communities are finding themselves concerned about the declining exposure to the arts. Art education has been proven to help with “cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills” as well as “motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork” (Smith). Having the ability and patience to sit down and paint a masterpiece or work through a song on the piano requires high focus and dedication. Students willing to do this will in turn have stronger skills to focus and be dedicated in other subjects. The mixture of all these abilities gained from participation in art programs lead to higher test scores and overall better performance in school. Still, these are only a few of the assets provided by art education.
Schools that offer fine arts classes have lower dropout rates and raised attendance. The fine arts positively impact students of lower socioeconomic status more those of a higher status. The fine arts have no barriers for race, religion, and culture when it comes to being involved in the arts. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to be involved (Katy Independent School District). Without the arts these students have no outlet for creative capabilities and no way to express their talents. In my country, after one hour of “Music” per week in Primary School, the Arts are disappearing from the school schedule. XXI century, we are becoming more and more aware of the importance of the arts in the education, and still we don’t provide enough space for it. When these deep emotions are being expressed you forget about all of your worries and stress for a period of time which allows your brain to focus on your art and being calm. The arts don’t only help you get better scores in school and control your thoughts and stress, they also help you become more aware of the world around you and help you grasp a better understanding of your feelings mean along with other people’s emotions (Greene et al. 2) . High schools across the country are working hard to defund their art programs, primarily because they believe that they are less important than the standard studies of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Not only should students take an arts program during their high school careers, but they should also take at least two semesters to be able to gain all that they can from one of the particular programs. It is now more important than ever to ensure an equally balanced education between the standard and art classes.
