Asperger's Syndrome Case Study

My son, Caden, was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome when he was three years old. Asperger’s Syndrome is a high functioning form of autism where the child has difficulty with social skills, communication difficulties, and repetitive behaviors. When my wife and I heard about a new charter school opening up near our house, we were excited. He would be able to attend the school from second grade until he graduated which would provide a structured environment which children with this disorder prefer. When my son was enrolled in the charter school, we found that our expectations differed from the reality when it came to classroom structure, resources, and the classroom environment. Classroom structure is important because it creates an environment that makes the students feel safe, supportive, and inclusive. At the charter school, all of the students were grouped together so they could interact with each other except for Caden, who had his own desk in the back of the classroom where he could not “disturb” others. When we heard about the school, we expected would be built before the school year began. However, we found out that the land had not been cleared so all of the classrooms were in singlewide trailers with metal walkways connecting them to each other. This would create a distraction for the classrooms whenever people would walk on them. This noise was particularly distracting for children with sensory disorders. The reality is with all of the outside distractions, the teachers would need to stop the lessons and wait for the noise to be reduced or gone completely before resuming the lesson plans.
