My son, Caden, was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome when he was three years old. Asperger’s Syndrome is a high functioning form of autism where the child has difficulty with social skills, communication difficulties, and repetitive behaviors. When my wife and I heard about a new charter school opening up near our house, we were excited. He would be able to attend the school from second grade until he graduated which would provide a structured environment which children with this disorder prefer. When my son was enrolled in the charter school, we found that our expectations differed from the reality when it came to classroom structure, resources, and the classroom environment. Classroom structure is important because it creates an environment that makes the students feel safe, supportive, and inclusive. At the charter school, all of the students were grouped together so they could interact with each other except for Caden, who had his own desk in the back of the classroom where he could not “disturb” others. When we heard about the school, we expected would be built before the school year began. However, we found out that the land had not been cleared so all of the classrooms were in singlewide trailers with metal walkways connecting them to each other. This would create a distraction for the classrooms whenever people would walk on them. This noise was particularly distracting for children with sensory disorders. The reality is with all of the outside distractions, the teachers would need to stop the lessons and wait for the noise to be reduced or gone completely before resuming the lesson plans. Autistic spectrum condition is a lifelong disability which affects how an individual communicates and relates to, other people. The understanding of autism has greatly improved since the 1940s when it was identified and one thing that we are aware of is that there is no cure however, there are many things that can be done to support people with autism. There are a large number of symptoms that are in relation to autism, such as a delay in speech development, not responding when their name is called and despite being able to hear, being intolerant of others entering their personal space. In addition to these, there are behavioural symptoms such as insisting on a familiar routine and becoming very anxious or upset if this is disrupted or changed, they will sometime talk at people rather than having a two-way conversation and a failure to understand or implement social rules.

Even as adults, sometimes we tend to question whether or not there is something more to us. In years past, and often still is, the subject of autism was unknown, and often misunderstood. Many times autistic tendencies are just dismissed as either bad behaviors or defiance. Many times the individual also has an underlying condition such as attention deficit disorder. While children with Asperger’s Syndrome have an average to above average intelligence and normal cognitive abilities, they unfortunately suffer with impaired social skills. An effective treatment program will have to be tailored to fit the specific child’s Asperger’s in order for the child to be successful in managing his or her own behaviors. This form of treatment is run by a psychologist, counselor, speech pathologist, or social worker, these therapies are invaluable ways to build social skills and the ability to read verbal and non-verbal cues that is often lacking in those with Asperger's. (WebMD, 2013) Without the implementation of the appropriate treatment needed for the lack of social skills as a child, these deficits will continue into adulthood and affect societal and professional performance. According to Szatmari, Bartolucci & Bremner (1989), “Adults with ASD are much more likely than the general population to be unemployed or underemployed and much less likely to have satisfying social relationships” (Szatmari, Bartolucci & Bremner, 1989, Para. 3).
