In, “Athens and Sparta” by Mr.Duckworth the author states “while Spartan had militaristic values athenian where democratic.” Sparta would have been a better place to live because spartan women had more freedom than other greek women, they could own their own property and where free of chores.
For one, Sparta is a better place to live in because women had more freedom. In the article Mr.Duckworth states,”In Sparta women had rights that other greek women did not have.” women were more free than other women in ancient greece.
In Sparta women could also own their own property. Women could actually have their name to something not everything was the man’s. In the article Mr.Duckworth states,”They could also own property by themselves.” I mean what
Women in Athens and Sparta were treated completely different. Women in Sparta were viewed more equally, while the women in Athens were treated like slaves. Women in a Greek city/state known as Athens, were not educated, and were treated the same if not worse than slaves (Athenian, 2005). In Athens, “Women lived in a society completely dominated by men” (O’Pry, 2012). This all ended when the women of Sparta (a Greek city/state) were seen overcoming these issues. The life of a woman in Athens was completely different than a Spartan. Women were treated differently, in Sparta they could manage the land, have their own public opinion, and were treated equal as men, while women in Athens had no public or political rights. Not only was this a big
All Women got to own their own property, In addition, Spartan women could move around with freedom without their husbands, and wear whatever clothing they’d like. And Finally, Homosexuality was very common in Sparta. Many people believed that this happened in all of Greece, but it was only spread in a small number of Greek states. The men of ancient Sparta were largely homosexual, or bisexual. This may be because men grew up with the same group of males throughout their entire life. From when they started training at the age of 7, to when they died in battle alongside them in war.Bisexuality was also fairly common among women. And these are the three reasons why I would love to live in
A woman’s place was supposed to be at home, in both Sparta and Athens, but the capacity in which they were supposed to be at home differed substantially. In Athens, it was compulsory for women to be acquiescent and compliant. They were supposed to stay home most of the time, bearing, nourishing and taking care of the children, spinning and weaving clothes, keeping the home clean and tidy, preparing food or overseeing the preparation of food by the servants; women from Sparta were the complete opposite of the women in Athens, they were allowed to keep property with the over seeing of the male counterpart, which according to Aristotle, said that in 4th BCE, 405 Sparta was owned by women, and may have contributed to
The Spartan social roles and government were very exquisite, proper and always knows their positions. At the bottom of the scale there where the Helots. The helots had so little to no rights that it was okay if their owners killed them. The helots were usually obtained or captured by the Spartans when out in battle. Helots were used as property and served their masters. Except they were not following what the man said. They followed what the women said due to the fact that men were fighting in wars and boys were training. Citizen males over the age of thirty were allowed to vote. The women were allowed to become citizen; as well they just did not receive the same rights as the men might have. Though the women in Sparta did have the most freedoms. They were allowed to own their own properties, they did not need permission to go out of the house; all because of the respect the Spartans had for mothers, also because the men were always in war. Lastly there was the Gerontes. They were the citizen males who were rich and over the age of sixty who had the most rights. One could only become a Genonte after surviving war. So, women could not become a Genonte due to the fact that they were not allowed to join the military and because they were not male.
Then, consider how well the military in Sparta were trained because after you served your time in the military you were very well protected from outside threats.Life in Sparta was very good for women they didn’t even have to go to the military! The Spartans were very open minded about the people in their society.Spartan government was a mix of many different kinds of government and if you were a man you also had a chance to be in government after serving military time.
Ultimately, life in Sparta was better than in India because of the caste system (pp. 247-248). Similarly to in Athens, a Spartan women's main responsibility was to produce warrior sons; however, in Athens the women remained
Sparta was definitely more progressive in people equality that the other city-states in Greece. The woman of Sparta had much more rights and opportunities that women in other city-states like Athens. For example, women could own their own land and control their own property and women also wore a special tunic that showed that they had freedom. Women were also free to speak to the husband friends and even remarry to another man if their husband has been gone for too long at war. Unlike in Athens, woman and men were both educated. Women studied something called Mousike, which was a combination of different lessons consisting of music, dance, and poetry. When women got older, the were very skilled with governance,
Athens was a democracy. Mr. Duckworth informs “Athens is said to have been the birthplace of democracy.” Democracy means “rule by the people.” The people discussed, voted on, and made decisions on matters. Notwithstanding, the people who would prefer to live in Athens are mistaken. In Sparta, women were more powerful than several other women in the ancient world. Mr. Duckworth explains “In Sparta, women had rights that other Greek women did not have.” In Athens, the government was not controlled by all people. The government was controlled by free male natives. On the other hand, in Sparta, women were privileged with many rights in comparison to other Greek women. For instance, women could own property and develop friendships with men of their choice. All in all, Spartan women enjoyed many more rights than Athenian
The purpose of society should be to strive to create an economically prosperous community that values equality and allowing everyone equal opportunity to pursue any sort of vocation and avocation. While both Athenian and Spartan societies had elements important to a successful society, Athens and Sparta also had certain values that were degrading to their society. Overall, neither society was right in terms of what they valued. Although Sparta did allow women considerable freedom, their extreme focus on military led to an extremely one dimensional society in which value was determined only by athletic ability and not by any other characteristics. This meant that citizens were largely focused on athletic training and preparing themselves for
They were thought to be less that men, and were imprisoned in their own homes as housewives and only came out into public during the festival of the gods. In Sparta, women were free. While their husbands were at war, they would run the businesses and farms and take care of the family. They could have any job they could dream of. Women could own land, businesses, houses, and could even pick who they wanted to marry. One would think women were working hard, and doing a lot of work, but some would say it was nothing compared to what the men were doing at war.
If the Athens had something the Spartans wanted all they would have to do is go and fight them and take whatever it is that they wanted. Things are different now in days because people use their intelligence and knowledge to get them what they want and respect, but back then things were different, using strength was one of the only ways people knew how to get what they wanted and that is why the Spartans were so successful. The Spartans could take whatever they wanted from the Athens because they had their military behind them. In Greece women weren’t treated with much respect but Spartans did treat women better than others. Athen women were stay at home wives and moms. They were very obedient to their husbands and really only knew how to do home things. Another reason I would prefer to live in Sparta is because at least the women in Sparta were privileged enough to learn to read and write. Which I consider to be very important both back then and now in days as well. The Spartan women had more rights and were treated overall better. Spartan women also participated in physical activities to stay in shape. They would march naked and because their husbands were away a lot they had freedom to pretty much go where ever they wanted. This may not seem like a big deal but considering other Greek women weren’t
If I had the choice to live in Athens or Sparta, which would I choose? This is a very interesting question. As a woman, I would be tempted to say Sparta, as Spartan women had freedoms unheard of in Athens. But this freedom comes at a high cost. Being a Spartan mother means handing over your sons at the age of seven to the state to be raised as a warrior. (Brand, n.d., p. 6) I am not sure I could so willingly hand over my child at such a young age knowing he would be a soldier.
First, women in Sparta had more freedom. In the text it states, “women were stronger and they formed friendships with whoever they wanted.” Women could own properties all by themselves. This proves that women in Sparta had more freedom than women in other Greek city-states.
But in Sparta, both women and men got an education. Also in Sparta women didn't have to cover top to toe and in athens the women had to be completely covered in clothing. The women didn’t fight but were very supporting of the men and they had to keep healthy so their kids would be healthy for fighting for there
Quite possibly one of the greatest differences between the Athenian and the Spartans regarded their attitude towards women. Womens’ roles in society and their relationship with the community played a major role in the development and effectiveness of each state’s government and culture. Unlike the rest of Greek women, Spartan women had the freedom of equality except for voting rights. They did little housework or sewing. Since men were in the military, the women had full authority over their households and were not forced into a life of only childbearing and housekeeping
