College athletes should be paid because of the hard work, dedication and effort they put into their respective sports. These athletes are a major source of income for their schools and they are not receiving a penny for it. These college athletes deserved to be paid, colleges are using these athletes to get money and they are never given anything but a pat on the back and a good job. College athletes work and train extremely hard to perform at the highest level possible. Whether college athletes should or should not get paid has been a controversial topic throughout the Collegiate Athletic Association for many years now. According to the article “My Priceless Opportunity” by Bill Walton , he believes that NCAA student athletes should not get paid because “the players entering the game know the rules going in and that they have been given a chance to make something of their lives in exchange for the privilege of being a student athlete”. Others like Michael Wilbon, author of “As Colleges’ Greed Grows, So Does the Hypocrisy”, thinks student athletes should get paid due to their hard work and labor. While I respect and admire the diligent task of being both a student and an athlete, I strongly agree with Bill Walton and the many others who support college athletes not being paid.

College athletes should be paid. The athletes put in as much work as the people who do get paid. Why should they not be paid? There are many pros for why they should get paid, but there are also many cons on why they should not get paid. The athletes should get paid because of how hard they work in season and the off-season. Do not pay all of the athletes, but pay the ones who are at a D1 college. The athletes should get paid because they put in the same amount of time as the pros do, and the pros get paid.

Student athletes should not be paid. A misconception is that all athletic programs in the NCAA make head-over-toe profit. There are three divisions of intercollegiate athletics, and frankly division three athletic programs don’t make as much or have a profit when compared to division one programs. “Critics of paying college athletes note that only a small number of them compete in sports or on teams that actually generate revenue”. (Paying College Athletes) The truth is only a fraction of athletic programs are actually profitable, while most pose a cost to the institution. The question arises primarily in division one programs and typically in the sports of basketball and football. The argument is made that these institutions receive millions of dollars from their student athletes’ performance, in return they should be paid.

On the other end of the question there are people who think student athletes should not be paid. They are called “student athletes” after all. Being paid for something that really isn’t a job doesn’t make sense to a lot of people. It also seems unfair to the students who aren’t athletes who work their butts off in school and don’t get paid for their hard work. Many don’t see sports as important and see it as just a hobby. They believe that being paid for doing something you willingly joined and something you just like to do just seems silly.

Free education is a huge factor as to why they should not be paid. Research shows that “College athletes don't have to worry about student loans, paying for textbooks, the cost of on living and meal plans.” (Source B) Which can add up to a substantial amount. I would say they get free education, in return they represent the school in sports.

The college basketball and football games that everyone watches on TV is no longer just a game, it is a business. The colleges and arenas hosting such events are not doing it solely for the love of sport, they are doing it for the money that will flow generously into their banking accounts. The athletic directors, coaching staff, and event staff are all doing their job to put food on the table. Most coaches get paid millions of dollars and most of the time that’s who the college players or their families are getting the money. Athletes wonder about getting money and how they are a going to get it. Well here is why college coaches make money off the player. The players are the ones who are really the reason why most coaches get paid the largest amount that they get. How good the player plays, their popularity etc. Coaches start off recruiting with a salary instead of a scholarship. But salary does not give a better deal than a scholarship.

I strongly believe that college athletes shouldn’t get paid because a scholarship to a college to play for their team and a free education is enough payment. Student-athletes with full-ride scholarships don’t have to worry about student loans or any other debts they would have to pay back for attending that college.

These players put their heart and soul on the field and get nothing in return. No matter the case, if the students move on to pro sports or not after college, they should be entitled to some pay for their contributions. College athletes deserve to be compensated for their playtime in these sports, sales of products with their name on it, and even compensation for their injuries.
