The sculptor Auguste Rodin used marble to create his sculpture The Kiss. It is two nude lovers sharing a kiss. According to the book on pg. 414, “They were engaged in a passionate kiss and the couple was originally conceived to be a part of Rodin’s Gates of Hell, two large bronze door depicting scenes from a masterpiece of medieval.” This quote demonstrates that his work was inspired by love and it wouldn’t have been as passionate if he wasn’t inspired. This sculpture according to ITP, “ illustrates a moment in the lives of a young man and woman whose tragic story was recounted in the Inferno. While visiting the second circle of Hell, dwelling place of those who had committed sins of the flesh, two ill-starred lovers famous in medieval Italy
There are more than three billion people living on Earth; however, not everyone adores each other. On the other hand, if people met Bill and Bud, two main characters from The Tender Bar, they would find them charming. J.R. Moehringer wrote an emotional autobiography about himself and his devastating life, in The Tender Bar, J.R. walked into a bookstore in an unhabituated mall, and met Bill and Bud, who changes his life forever. Many youth, teens, and adults would find Bill and Bud likeable, because the pair of them are smart, optimist, and loving.
“Love in LA” is a short story written by Dagoberto Gilb. The author was actually born in LA; his mother is Mexican while his father is from Kentucky. From this, you can infer that the narrator of “Love in LA” is either fully Mexican or at the very least a “halfie,” even though the story itself does not explicitly describe the appearance of the main anti-hero, Jake. This story is written in the third person point of view. Although it is in the third person point of view, the story focuses on mostly Jake. The plot centers on the young and optimistic Jake. One day while driving in traffic, while day dreaming of a better life for himself, he crashes into another car. As he was pondering whether or not to drive away, he saw that the owner of the car was a nice looking woman; so he second-guessed speeding away. He then attempted to flirt with the seemingly naive woman, named Mariana. Jake tries to avoid having to deal with the insurance company, however Mariana does not end up buying Jake’s lies and proceeds to ask for his number, insurance, plates, and driver license number. Jake then giving her what she wants but because he does not have insurance, he ends
Francesca once confided in Dante, “Love, that releases no beloved from loving, took hold of me so strongly through his beauty that, as you see, it has not left me yet. Love led the two of us unto one death” (Inf. V, 103-106). Hundreds of years later, Francesca’s words still ring true. However, she was actually not speaking of love, but lust. The topic of pure, divine love is explored in this epic poem, particularly in Canto III when Dante first enters the depths of hell. Throughout Canto V of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, the topic of lust is examined as it related to Florence and the world of the late Middle Ages. In the depths of hell, the topics of divine love and lust are placed in stark contrast to one another. These thoughts translate into modern American society and offer insight into our cultural practices.
Domenico di Michelino (1417-1491), an Italian painter and medieval poet was known best for his epic poem, The Divine Comedy, which includes sections representing the three tiers of the Christian afterlife: Purgatory (Purgatorio), Hell (Inferno), and Paradise (Paradiso). This poem was a great work of medieval literature and was considered the greatest work of literature composed in Italian. The Divine Comedy was a Christian vision of mankind’s eternal fate. When The Divine Comedy was written, Dante made a cathedral painting that represents his poem called Dante and His Poem. In the painting, the Dante shows the 3 tiers related to the Christian afterlife. Dante was standing in a red robed colossus, revealing his poem to the city of Florence. The painting was full of great meaning, inspiring so many artists from Rodin to Robert Rauschenberg.
For many children, books are simply a fun way to end a day and to spend some time bonding with their caretaker. However, books have the capability to do much more than putting a child to sleep. Children’s stories often incorporate morals into their tales, some which provide a general understanding of societal norms, and some with explicit lessons that one can take away from the book. The book studied for this assignment falls under the latter category. The Kissing Hand was written by Audrey Penn, and illustrated by Ruth E. Harper and Nancy M. Leak. It was first released in 1993 by Child & Family Press, which is an imprint of the Child Welfare League of America. It is currently priced at $16.80 for a paperback copy on Amazon, or $18.62 for a hardcover copy.
“Master and Man” by Leo Tolstoy is a story that explores the dynamics between a peasant, Nakita and his master,Vasillii Andriech. Andriech foolishly risks both of their lives, when they venture to another town in inclement weather to secure a business deal. Unfortunately, Andreich's impatience and greed ultimately leads to his demise. At the end of the story Nikita dies and is denied the same bliss that Vasillii Andreich experiences in death; in order to solidify the dichotomy between these two men, demonstrate how Andriech cheated Nakita, and he uses Nakita's lackluster death to amplify Andriech's extraordinary passing.
There are several different works called The Kiss, created by different artists. Auguste Rodin, Constatin Brancusi, and Gustav Klimt all have their own version of the work. While Rodin and Brancusi created a sculpture, Klimt created a painting. These artists conveyed many different emotions for their viewers to perceive. These works of art also have several things in common. It is important to learn about each artist in order to learn the ideas and thoughts that come from their works.

A prosecutor against child molesters, Nina Frost, knows all too well the loopholes the justice system entails and when it is her own five-year-old son, Nathaniel, who has been sexually assaulted, her husband, Caleb, and her lives flips upside down because Nina knows too clearly that her son will not find justice within the courts. Some things in life take moral courage, things like kissing your ex-boyfriend in front of a large crowd of people, news cameras, and your parents. This is the exact situation Harry and Craig are in when they decide to set the world record for longest kiss. Why would these two boys make the decision to willingly be dehydrated and sleep deprived for 32 hours straight all while kissing? Well, for two reasons. One, they are trying to figure things out about themselves and their love for one another and two, they are making a statement in their small town that just because you’re different doesn’t mean that you need to be treated differently. This courageous act leads to a lot of conflict during this long marathon
For my paper, the element of art I choose to write on is shape, and the two pieces of art I chose to go with the shape idea is The Kiss by Gustav Klimt on page 418 and Counter-Composition V by Theo van Doesburg.
The image being discussed now is one that was created by Jan Vermeer and is called The Love Letter. Jan Vermeer only created a small handful of works of art 35 in total (authors). However, his works are works of contemporary and old works, and together they create amazing works of art. Jan Vermeer worked as an art dealer and this may have given Vermeer the tools to create works of art form contemporary and old style paintings that he may have sold and purchased as an art dealer. This painting was created in 1669, and Vermeer used oil on canvas. This painting right now is currently located at Rijksmuseum, in Amsterdam (website). Vermeer’s signature on his works is the use of a single window with the light pouring in and shining on the human
For this essay I will be unraveling two poems to find a deeper meaning from The Norton Anthology of World Literature, Volume B. The two poems are “A Lover’s Prize” by Beatrice of Dia and “The Wound of Love” written by Heinrich von Morungen. Heinrich and Beatrice are considered to be medieval lyric poets; however, Beatrice was a medieval lyric poet from France and they are known as troubadour. Beatrice just so happened to be apart of southern France’s trobairitz which was just a tribute to some of the best troubadour of their time. She was married to the Count of Viennois, Guilhem de Poitiers but she was having an affair with another troubadour who went by the name Raimbaut d’Orange and their poetic style was quite similar. However, when it comes to Heinrich von Morungen not much is known about him. From the little we know about Heinrich, we find that, his style of writing fit into the category of Minnesang which means “songs of love”. His lyrics (that have survived) are also some of the greatest in early German history. Nonetheless, these writers have both put forth some impressive work.
After visually assessing both sculptures of The Kiss, the Brancusi was more fascinating to me. I feel the simple square piece of limestone depicts man and women equally divided yet intertwined in a place and time. The focal point is the shared eye by both man and woman, and the texture given to the woman’s long hair contrasts yet gives balance to the statue. There is no doubt this piece was intended to stand alone on an open grassy lawn were two lovers intertwine. On the other hand, the Aguste Rodin sculpture is more of a soft touch proportional statue that is intended for indoor and to stand in the center of a room. The man’s hand resting on her hip shows intimacy yet hesitation, the book on his hand depicts a story how it ends with a kiss
The artist Gustave Doré engraved the entire Divine Comedy in wood. One of these 136 engravings is Punishment of the Avaricious and the Prodigal. This piece is an accurate illustration of The Inferno’s Circle Four because it closely follows Dante’s description in the text, it is creative, and it is well illustrated.
