In contrast to help received as an ASD child, services and overall well-being as an ASD adult are lacking. In the article “Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorders,” the authors describe that there is limited support and interventions for individuals with Autism who are over the age of 18 (Howlin and Moss, 2011, p.275). Howlin and Moss state, “The findings indicate that, as adults, many people with ASD, including those of normal IQ, are significantly disadvantaged regarding employment, social relationships, physical and mental health, and quality of life” (2011, p. 275). What makes the situation worse is there is little research being conducted to aid Autistic adults, especially ones over the age of 30 (Howling and Moss, 2011, p. 275). It is …show more content…
However, there are many other symptoms that can be exhibited based on severity. For instance, an individual with Autism may have repetitive behaviors, frequent temper tantrums, and sensitivity to light, sound, or touch (DSM-5, 2013, p. 50). Severity is based on the needs of the individual, but the majority of Autistic traits will be present early on in development (DSM-5, 2013, p.50). Recently, there has been a rise in the number of people diagnosed with ASD and researchers speculate this is because of new technology and environmental factors (What is Autism?, 2015). The new technology that has been developed, has allowed for more research to be dedicated to the causes of Autism. A major finding is that gene mutations have been determined to account for at least 15% of ASD cases (DSM-5, 2013, p. 57). The environmental factors that can impact development and may result in Autism are: parental age at conception, illness during pregnancy, and oxygen deprivation of the fetus (What is Autism?, 2015). Once, an individual is suspected to have Autism, they must be evaluated and diagnosed officially by a psychiatrist or specialist for the best treatment procedures. Unfortunately, there is a limited number of medicines specific for ASD, but Risperidone and Aripiprazole have shown to improve mood and irritability in Autistic children (Medicines, 2015). However, the best treatment outcomes usually are a combination of medication and behavioral therapy (How is Autism Treated?, 2015). Within the public school system, schools are required by law to provide appropriate education to suit the needs of the child. Whether these accommodations are by pull-out, extra classes, or extra attention is based on the resources of the district, but every disabled child is entitled to help (Hallahan et. al, 2015). On the other
Autism Spectrum Disorders are developmental disabilities with lifelong effects for the person. They are characterized by the repetitive behaviors exhibited by the client with social and communication deficits as well. Clients with ASDs have unusual abilities to learn, they struggle with paying attention and may react inappropriately with extreme tantrums to different sensations. ASDs include and are not limited to autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, atypical autism and Asperger disorder. Research of autism has been tracked by the Centers of Disease Control for prevalence since 1996, however tracking of developmental disabilities began in the 1980s.
Autism is a complex developmental disability that causes problems with social interaction and communication. Symptoms usually start before age three and can cause delays or problems in many different skills that develop from infancy to adulthood. Disorders included in the Autism Spectrum are Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Rett’s syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder are among the list of related disorders, but are not included in this spectrum. There are no treatments bio-medically,
I do not really know what autism is. I believe autism has something to do with delayed learning. Some people with autism do not talk much. They seem very shy and don’t hang around with others much. I hear about autism on commercials. I also heard that people with autism are good at some things though. People with autism tend to be do things differently. For example, some people function by remembering patterns, pictures, or words. Autistic individuals are good at paying attention to detail.
Autism is a form of neurodevelopment disorder in the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired development in social interactions and communication, both verbal and non-verbal. There is an observed lack of spontaneous acts of communication; both receptive and expressed, as well as speech impairments. A person diagnosed with Autism will also show a limited range of activities and interests, as well as forming and maintain peer relationships. The individuals will display limited interests, which are often very focused and repetitive. He or she is likely to be very routine oriented and may show behavioral symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and self-injurious behaviors.
As a part of American culture, Autism Speaks has wriggled its way into the homes and mouths of families across the country, throwing massive amounts of money into fundraising, advocacy, research, and advertising every year. They are one of the most well-known, easily recognized organizations that advocates and raises awareness for the growing community of Autistic people in America. However, can the American people really be sure that Autism Speaks is going about it in the right way? With better, faster diagnoses, disability services, and more qualified specialists, why is Autism Speaks focusing tightly on researching connections and causes and cures, rather than channeling that money into assisting families of autistic children and adults? Why do some of the salaries of their board members exceed six figures, if they truly are a “non-profit” organization? Why do some of their ads treat autism like a man in an alleyway waiting to rob someone of their happiness, their money, and their “happy marriage?” (I am Autism). While millions of Americans believe that Autism Speaks is a worthy non-profit organization, the truth is that their spending is reckless and their treatment of autistic
What is autism? What are the symptoms of autism? There are so many questions about autism, especially there are many children that suffer from different types of autism which are autism disorder, Asperger's syndrome, pervasive development disorder. This essay is going to explain different steps on how to help your child cope with the world or at home. My brother has autism, he was diagnosed when he was two years old which was very interesting and shocking at the same time.growing up with an autistic brother wasn't easy, there were so many things to learn through these eight years, but me and my mom took these steps providing a soothing environment, taking him to therapy, ensure safety around the home, understanding stimming/communication verbal, understanding special interest.

Currently, efforts are being made by foundations, such as Autism Speaks and the National Autism Association not only to bring awareness of seriousness of the disorder, but also to establish ways towards the cause and a cure for autism. In 1997, Congress requested the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Autism Coordinating Committee (ACC) to “enhance the quality, pace and coordination of efforts at the NIH to find a cure for autism” (NINDS, 2009 p.18). ASD is too extensive of a disorder to find a single cure for it; these “cures” would require millions of dollars in further research and testing, just like any other medication or treatment. While there have been autistic geniuses in the past, not all with ASD should be hailed as such; instead of trying to justify or cure the disorder, more people should be willing to accept it.
Over the years, more people are becoming aware of Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD. The growing number of individuals who are affected by ASD have been increasing over the years. This could be do to the new DSM development of what is considered ASD or simply more children are being born with ASD. Either way, ASD is more predominate in our society today. ASD is defined in the DSM 5 as having abnormal social aspects, lack of social skills, non-verbal communications skills, deficits in development, lack of understanding of relationships, and self-stimulation through repetitive behaviors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Although these are not all of the symptoms caused by ASD
Bekah, age 12 has moderate level Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Her life does not fit the typical cognitive, linguistic, and socio-emotional development of an adolescent girl. A diagnosis of moderate level Autism Spectrum Disorder is described in the article, Autism-The Basics, Daymut (2009) as, “a developmental disorder, impairing an individual’s
Autism is defined as the brain disorder that begins in early childhood and persists throughout adulthood. Autism affects three areas of human development: (1) verbal and nonverbal communication, (2) social interaction, and (3) creative or imaginative play. Autism is considered a severe disorder and developmental disability that prevents individuals from properly understanding what they see, hear and sense. The cause of autism remains unknown. Current theories indicate a problem with the function or structure of the central nervous system. This essay overviews the history of autism and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). It provides an idea of the population and causes of autism. It takes about the program services and the current operational issues related to autism.
“Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) formerly known as just Autism, is a disorder that affects about 1 in 68 children here in the United States.” (Facts about ASD) This is a pretty high prevalence and the number is continuing to rise. “Autism is a developmental disability that can cause significant impairments in behavioral, communication, and social aspects of everyday life.”(Facts about ASD). The intellectual functioning of individuals with ASD is among one of the biggest of all disabilities. The range can occur from moderate intellectual disabilities all the way up to super genius levels. However, most students function at average intelligence in all academic areas except for reading and math. The reason the name switch form Autism to ASD occurred is that now according to the DSM-V Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) are now disabilities that fall into the spectrum that is ASD. Diagnosis of Autism can be determined at age 2 with high reliability, but is not often discovered until the individual reaches school age and begins to fall behind their peers. It is critical that a parent goes and gets their child screened for developmental disabilities at the doctor at least every 9 months during their few first years of life, so that if they do have a disability early intervention strategies can be employed. ASD occurs in every racial and ethnic group,
Over the past years, the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders has increased rapidly and so have the development of strategies to help children with ASD to acquire milestones in classroom settings. The prevalence of children being diagnosed with ASD is 1 in 68 children in the United States. The causes of Autism are not well known, however, research studies suggest that causes of ASD may include neurological, heredity and genetic mutations, and environmental influences. Characteristics of children with ASD include lack of delay in spoken language, peer relationships and pretend play; fixation on objects and repetitive use of language are as well characteristics children with Autism may display. Professionally, ASD is characterized as
