The term autistic implies a developmental disorder which can vary in its severity and is often marked by communication problems, social difficulties and, repetitive behaviors such as touching the same object repeatedly or flipping them nonstop. The implicated social deficits present in autistic individuals distinguishes autism and the related autism spectrum disorders from other developmental disorders (Dawson, Soulieres, Gernsbacher, & Mottron, 2007). While several children may all have been diagnosed with autism, not all of them will show the same behaviors or problems. Social impairments are obvious in people diagnosed with autism. Autism sufferers also lack the intuition about others that many people take for granted. An autistic child’s unusual social development becomes apparent early in childhood, which is when most diagnosis happens.
The traits of autism usually begin to appear in a child who is between the ages of 2 and 3 years old. Some experts think that symptoms can start sooner; sometime around when the brain starts to fully develop (Barom-Cohen, 1988). Infants who are diagnosed with autism are often less attentive to social stimuli and show little if any response to hearing their own name. Differences in communication may be present from the first year of life, and may include delayed onset of babbling, unusual gestures, diminished responsiveness, and vocal patterns. In the second and third years of an autistic child’s life there, a decrease in babbling, consonants, words, and word combinations. Their gestures also are less often integrated with words.
