This inquiry is set out to define the components that make up an effective leader, whilst taking into account different situational contexts. The concept of leadership has proven highly ambiguous, where countless definitions have tried to pinpoint exactly what makes up an effective leader. The following definition has been chosen as it reflects the overall stance of the inquiry:

The figure illustrates how the five principles give a holistic view of the entire leadership process and clearly demonstrates how important it is to take all parties into account when trying to define such an illusive term as ‘effective leadership’. This ties in well with the effort of diluting the concept of ‘leadership romanticising’.
The word ‘sustainable’ has been chosen as a second criterion, as the philosophy sets out to be both agile and adaptable in several different settings, making the philosophy a contingency based theory. The two-factor theory of leadership (task- and relationship-oriented) is a prominent leadership philosophy influencing many of the theories applied to organisations today, four out of the five principles chosen will compliment the two-factor theory but will also be improved upon by adding a third dimensional principle, change-oriented behaviour, to demonstrate how increasingly important it is to factor in situational consideration, thereby creating a holistic philosophy. 3
