Baroque Pop

Album covers are often designed to portray a message and show the theme of the music. In class, my group and I analyzed War by U2. This album originates from the United Kingdom, and was released in 1983 during the Cold War. The album’s theme focuses on both the physical an emotional effects of war. Some songs specific to the Vietnam War. The Album art shows a young man staring straight ahead with red letters vertical on the right. The red most likely represents blood. I thing there is a picture of a young boy to represent the youth and innocence that is lost in these violent wars. His blank, steely stare suggests that he has been exposed to too much tragedy for someone who has not even been on the earth

One major difference in the pieces is the use of the basso continuo. This basso continuo helps to establish a harmony between the instruments and usually takes a back seat in the composer. In

The Classical time period, which spanned a length of seventy years, from 1750 to 1820, was very different in nature from its predecessor, the Baroque time period. The Baroque era featured works that were ornamentally elaborate, where the artists and composers centered their works on a big, bold style that was dramatic in its composition. Artists and composers transferred strong feelings of tension and emotion into their works and it was common for there to be some type of action or movement happening within the work. Those who lived in the Classical time period, valued simplicity and wanted to return to the ideals of the Greeks. Therefore, the Classical time period is characterized by clear structural clarity, simplicity, smoothness, and symmetry. However, though the works took a step back from the grand movement of the Baroque era, the composers and artists of the Classical time period did lay out a tuneful and elegant style in their music and art. Out of the Classical era came many renowned artists and composers, two of those whom are artist Sir Thomas Lawrence and composer Ludwig van Beethoven (“NYU”).

The Baroque and Classical periods are where we see the emergence of renowned composers like Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and Beethoven. The music from these famous composers are some of the world’s most recognizable and beautiful classics of all time. Music of these eras are still being used in many of today’s movies and commercials. Musical characteristics developed from these eras are still used and heard presently in popular music.

Baroque and High Renaissance are two very important periods in art history, during that time a lot of different forms of art were created which include architecture, painting, and music. Baroque is just another word for having flashy symmetrical decoration. It’s a style that started around the 1600s in Italy and with its popularity it quickly spread around Europe. High Renaissance artist displaces the importance of draftsmanship, structured, and often-centralized compositions. Many artists quickly rise to stardom during these eras. This paper compares and contrasts these two art periods with the works created by great artists such as Marcantonio Franceschini who lived during the Baroque period and Mariotto Albertinelli who lived during the High Renaissance period.

Antonio Vivaldi, known as “The Red Priest,” due to his hair color, attempted to give mass, but his bronchial asthma restricted him from doing his job well (Heller). He lost his ability to preach when the pain proved too much. So he returned to his first love: music. Antonio Vivaldi’s father, a barber-turned-professional-violinist in Venice, taught him to play the violin at a very young age. At ten years old, Vivaldi became his father’s substitute at St. Mark’s Orchestra (Getzinger). Thus, at an early age, he showed extraordinary promise. Years later, that promise came to fruition as he revolutionized Baroque music. Because Antonio Vivaldi’s compositions added warmth and a rhythmically textured sound to a rather ornamental Baroque style, his musical approach appealed to listeners and changed how everyone viewed concertos. His revolutionary style influenced other musicians and European society from his first composition in 1690 to his death in 1741. More than two centuries later, his music, best represented by The Four Seasons, continues to have an impact. When Vivaldi lost his ability to preach, he found a new but familiar voice through the violin and became the Baroque period’s most influential composer, changing the way Europeans, and even other composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, approached music.

When comparing Baroque era music to any modern day rock band, one most listen to the music with open ears. It is hard to identify the similarities of Baroque music and that of modern day rock. Although, the advances made in music during the Baroque era (1600-1750) are still noticeable in modern day rock. A perfect example of the noticeability of modern rock influenced by Baroque music can be heard in the Baroque music of Johann Sebastian Bach’s, “Brandenburg Concerto No 4 G major BWV 1049”(Classical Vault 2), and modern day rock band, This will destroy you combined instrumental music, “Three legged work horse and there are some” (TheRealConcertKing). The artwork is black, white, and grey with varying line lengths and thickness. The most prominent feature is the woman's nose and lips and even the edges of her face are mostly implied lines instead of hard lines. The picture is gritty and looks as if someone scrubbed a regular black and white image of a woman with a scrub brush of some sort. It is hard to tell if there is an overlaying image that is covering the woman's face or if it is just supposed to be her hair. Her nose and lips are a bit on the larger and thicker side, she may have been intended to be African American or Hispanic. Some of the wisps around her face seem feather-like. The image only shows her from just below her shoulders and up and it seems like she may have on sunglasses. The image also has quite a bit of white background which is not that common for artworks to have, typically the artist tries to fill in each part of their canvas with the image or wit hanother color besides white.

Zadok the Priest is a piece by George Frideric Handel from the Baroque Era, and Missa Papae Marcelli "Gloria" is a piece by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina from the Renaissance Era.Baroque music broke away from the harshness of the Medieval and early Renaissance style with new emphasis on the use of vocal and instruments. Many musical forms were born out of this era including opera. In this cover there is an influence from Cubism. Picasso introduced Cubism which was based upon fragmented images (Guillaume & Dorothea, 2012). Such paintings made the viewer connect the parts like a puzzle. The technique of collage was also introduced by Picasso. He represented everyday life by different pictures and materials and integrated them to make a single design. This introduced a 3D outlook on the paintings which also gave a new meaning by the combination of different objects. Rand, inspired by Picasso, followed a similar pattern in the design discussed (Bernard, 2005). He made the cover by collating a number of objects: the barbed wire, the shadow of the wire which indicates space depth suggesting texture, the name card and the double meaning portrayed by the artwork.

The Baroque time period was a time of artistic style extravagant motion and clear, simply interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, excitement, and magnificence in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance, theater, and music. Opera is an arrangement in which singers and musicians perform a dramatic work combining libretto (text) and musical score, typically in a theatrical setting. Opera came out of the baroque period of people wanting to make music that was more expressive. A group of people in Italy decided that a single line of melody with simple accompaniment would be much more expressive than words. A number of modern artists have focused on reflecting personal perception of the world through a contemporary Baroque style in art. The increasing popularity of Baroque nowadays is due to the complex processes that took place in society and the solutions the modern culture has to offer to resolve them. Truly, through the history, the emergence of Baroque elements has always reflected the complexity of human life, followed by technological progress and cultural exchange. Eventually, Baroque, the style characterized by extravagance and drama, has been defined as anti-classical, innovative and experimental, intended to touch directly the beholder, individual of diverse and pluralistic society.

Baroque Period, during which a few of the greatest composers on this planet were born, brought classical music onto a whole new level. The word “Baroque”, which came from the Portuguese for “the imperfect pearl”, implies strange, extravagant and overblown. Toccata, fugue, chorale, ortario, and the concerto Grosso, all of these special musical forms were created and represent this period. The six main characteristics: increased emotional expression, contrast, use of basso continuo, continued harmonic development, use of ornament, and the emphasis of improvisation, molded the unique style of music of the Baroque period.
