Being a college student takes time and dedication, especially when having other priorities such as work, family, and time to take a break. A student has to make time to do homework or study for your tests and finals, while still maintain a job and a social life. Every person is different and manages their time differently so it comes easier to some than it does to others. Others put work off to the last minute and add stress that is not needed. I personally do not always use my time effectively and it has been a problem in the past, along with delaying work that needs to be done. I have thought of ways to improve my barriers. Along with people who could help me overcome them.
Every person has their own barriers that impact how they do in school. At times we learn to control them but they may just get the best of us. My two biggest barriers are time management and procrastination. They go hand in hand most of the time, and I eventually end up getting everything done but the process to getting them done is the issue. Procrastination has affected my school work because I put the work off until the last minute and I cannot always finish in time, causing my grade to drop. My time management is also an issue because even if I have homework or a reading I should be doing, I tell myself I can finish after I watch an episode of my favorite show, or after I get back from a night out with friends. Having done this in the past, It has affected my work because something else comes up and
For first year students coming straight from high school, college life can either be very exciting or overwhelming depending on how well one prepares for it. Some have the notion that college is fun and is all about partying, while some believe that it is an environment in which they can achieve the ultimate freedom thus escape the stringent rules made by their parents at home. Others look forward to experiencing a different learning environment while being exposed to different cultures and sharing different academic knowledge. Successful assimilation into college life is determined by the student’s capability to transform into the new role of a college student. Numerous students face challenges they have never experienced before which can
The initial shock of the significant workload and expectations can take their toll, but good time management skills can prevent multiple late nights in a row to get assignments done on time. Kelci Lynn Lucier has worked in higher education for ten years, and has experienced students struggle to try and find the balance between extracurricular activities, personal activities, and education priorities. Luckily, Lucier has four tips to help best use the time provided in a day. Lucier’s first step focuses on managing ones academic time and how it needs to be the top priority above all other curricular activities, stating: “It's important to remind yourself why you're in college in the first place: to graduate” (Lucier). Lucier’s second step is be able to manage personal time, she talks about how unrealistic it is to always be working, studying, or learning, she wants students to try and find time to do something fun with friends or a club. Lucier’s third step is to wkeep the students health in mind, it does no good to stay up until two in the morning studying over a history mid-term, only to be half asleep for the test anyway; sleep is important and without can only increase the stress. Lucier’s fourth and final step is to not be afraid to seek help with your time management, she states: “The most important thing to have for time
“Why are you even bothering to go to college? Seriously.” “There’s a party tonight. You have to be there.” One of the obstacles to academic achievement that I face on a regular basis is a lack of support in some areas of my life. Actually, sometimes it isn’t a lack of support that is the problem, but more a pervasive attitude that education isn’t that important or is a waste of time. My coworkers are happy working in retail forever, and good for them, yet seem resentful that I have made my education a priority. At times they seem bound and determined to lure me off track with invitations to parties during exam week or offers of promotions if I cut my course load. At school, many of the students in my community college courses don’t seem to
There are many Obstacles in my life as a college student, and I hadn’t prepared myself to get through all of them. Many obstacles lead back to money and not having enough to get to the stable and secure career in the future. My main obstacles are: money, procrastinating, fear, and being unsure of what I want to do.
In order to make school a priority, there is a huge personal obstacle that I have to overcome. My obstacle is time: time for the kids, time for my husband, and time for me. I am a stay home mom, but to supplement our family income I was caring for two infants each weekday for ten hours each day. Also, I feel it is important to be involved in my children’s activities and be present whenever possible. I attend every home track meet, home volleyball game, band concert, Boy Scout meeting, home basketball game, home football game, and all my preschooler’s play-dates. We also attend church every Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. I help out with youth trips, teach in a rotation for children’s church and teach in a rotation for fourth through sixth grade bible study. I am busier now that I stay home than I ever was working a forty hour a week job. To work around this obstacle, or rather to work with it, I have down sized my involvement in Boy Scouts, I only watch one infant now, and I use a weekly schedule that helps me give everyone and everything the time it needs.
A college student’s coursework requires a lot of time and dedication to their studies. Obstacles can be presented in a student’s life that can possibly reduce their continued efforts of producing quality work. Some obstacles that a student can expect to experience while attending school can be as simple as scheduling conflicts, employment responsibilities and child care issues. The average student must manage their time wisely to conquer those unexpected milestones.
We arrive from the wombs of our mothers as blank pieces of paper. Quickly, however, these blank pieces of paper are flooded with questions that directly and indirectly request you to find x. From deciding which crayon color would be most appropriate to turn the walls into our canvas to deciding which combination of friends will best allow us to enjoy ourselves yet remain productive to choosing the colleges that best fit our needs, our lives have always been filled problems that require us to find x.
Going into college challenges people to connect with others who may have different ideals and personalities from you, especially when the first person you meet would be your roommate. The stranger that will be under the same roof as you not knowing whether or not this person would like you or hate you. You both come from different walks of life with diverse customs of how they lived under their household. You don’t want to step on their toes or invade their privacy, but when rooming with someone you don’t know things might not turn out so peacefully. Even though it’s a new and scary experience to be in, it’s best to not let it go to your head and think too much about the
In order to become a college student, I must overcome my complication with motivation. Typically, my will consists of striving for good grades, doing serviceably in my leadership positions, and being driven to attend a multitude of events to satisfy both my interests and inclination for self-improvement. Consequently, the obstacle I must overcome is when my motivation falters, which commonly occurs when I have a plurality of deadlines and events within a short time period. Specifically, I temporarily loose interest in being actively productive. In terms of school work, I lack the motivation to be proactive in homework and upcoming deadlines. Therefore, I procrastinate until the urgency of the deadlines force me to begin working again.
What other obstacles might you have to overcome to find time to devote to your education? Social interaction is a big part of students lives, I don't find it being so much of an issue as I am older than most students. My pool of friends has dwindled from hundreds to a few close friends, so social interaction isn't a big deal to me. I would rather come home and get my schoolwork done and out of the way. I do enjoy weightlifting and running which both consume a lot of time during my day. I could always cut back on those, because while I may not feel confident in my physical strength, I will feel more confident in my mental abilities and cognition. Unforeseen obstacles may come up as well, such as a death in the family or physical illness. But
Being in college is time consuming because, once I am finished with class, I have to help my daughter with her homework. Once I am finished helping her I have to get dinner prepared and cooked, which can take up to 2 hours. Next, I have to feed her, bathed her, and get us ready for school and work the next day. Of course, she wants to play, talk, or watch television
As a high school senior student, one of the most significant challenges in which I’ve faced, was when I was in my junior year and played golf. It was my first year and I had no idea of how golf would be. Since I loved playing sports, I never bothered to be in one, because I never had time. When practices came by, I had to figure everything out by myself, without any of my team member’s help. My coach wouldn’t quite teach me the basics of the sport. I had to learn through my own mistakes when we would play in the match games. This sport involved much of patience and plenty of walking in the hot heat for a tremendous amount of time, which were two things I wasn’t comfortable with having, especially in the season of summer. Looking back to that significant challenge, it has brought me joy to know that I was capable enough to do it; and thought I’d never make it to the end.
How I manage time is a reflection of what I value. Managing my time corresponds to how successful I will be in college and throughout life. Knowing and setting priorities to meet goals, carrying out plans, taking control of time, and staying focused are some events that are involved with time management. For many of us, balancing school with work and family is the greatest challenge involved with prioritizing. Good advance planning will help in meeting these challenges. Staying focused is usually difficult, especially for first-year students. Staying focused entails remembering and dedicating to the most important purpose for being in college. Sacrificing unnecessary commitments and keeping my
In college life, students face many pressures. One of my biggest stressors was keeping my student scholarship. After coming in to college with a 3.3 grade point average, I knew that keeping a 3.0 in college, for my scholarship, was going to be a challenge that I had not yet experienced. This caused me to work even harder and sometimes even too hard. The scholarship played a large factor in choosing Baldwin Wallace as my school of choice, so retaining my reward is of the utmost importance to both me personally, and my parents financially. As I began classes I realized that the work load seemed a lot larger than high school, and sometimes as if it were never going to end. I soon realized how to balance my time between school work and making grades, as well as meeting new people and having fun. There are many enjoyable things that make college the great experience it has been so far, so finding an equilibrium of hard work and good times has been one the best new attributes I have
Many college students may find the academic experience very stressful (Swick, 1987). One potential coping strategy frequently offered by university counseling services is time management. One hundred and sixty-five students completed a questionnaire assessing their time management behaviors and attitudes,
