In a very highly tense and stressful situation, people tend to go as far as they can to avoid the situation at all costs. There are only a handful of people who run towards the problem to solve it in hopes to save someone’s life. These people are risking their own lives to save someone in need of aid, all without any money, fame, or endorsements in the future. In today’s society the concept of heroism can make a huge impact on a person’s or society’s view. Heroes help teach us what is right from wrong and constantly role-modeling the concept of persistency such as the very popular superhero Batman. He is persistently fighting crime in Gotham City, and will not stop until the criminals are put to justice. Even though his actions are more violent …show more content…
Odysseus survived the gruesome Trojan War which lasted approximately ten years. After defeating the Trojan Prince, Odysseus endures another major obstacle when he is left to complete his journey back to Ithaca after all his men die. “My crew fell overboard and were carried in the waves, like cormorants, around our blackened ship” (Homer 1139). Odysseus had to complete the last seven years of his journey singlehandedly to return back home to Ithaca. Odysseus was aided by Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. Athena helped Odysseus stay focused by giving him updates on the situation with the suitors in Ithaca. That pushed Odysseus to focus on the journey.Odysseus showed tremendous perseverance to trek forward on his 20 year journey to return back to his family. Even Though it took Odysseus two decades to get home, it greatly displayed his superior perseverance to maintain his sanity and focus on the journey to see his loved ones. In addition, Malala shows perseverance after she is confronted by a rebel on her thoughts about women's rights. While going to school one day, Malala was shot 2 times in the shoulder and once on the side of her head. Even after that violent event Malala stood up to the Taliban on national television by saying “How dare the Taliban take away my basic right to education” (Nobelprize.org). Quickly after that interview on national television many human …show more content…
Malala is considered a hero in our society because she is very persistent in her beliefs. Malala believes that everyone should be able to have equal rights to education because, education is power to grow and succeed in life (Kailash Satyarthi). This shows that in today’s society people value someone who is willing to fight for equality for all races, religions, sexes, and ethnicities. In addition, Malala does show weakness throughout her journey to promote education equality. Malala begins to confront the Taliban, a major terrorist group that controlled Swat Valley. This is a mistake by her because she does not realize the consequences of her rebellious actions for education equality to a well-established terror group that could kill her and her family. This shows that in today’s society, people are not simply portraying a hero as a person who is strong and skillful. Instead the modern society looks for someone who is willing to make a difference that is beneficial to the
When Malala began speaking she was only 11 and was only trying to speak her mind. The dangerous terrorist group has invaded her home city, and she had the courage to speak up against them expecting no fame. The Taliban enforce strict Islamic law and destroyed or shut down girls' schools preventing women from getting and education. The people living here lived in constant fear but Malala was one of the few brave enough to fight it. Malala chose to continue going to school and even helped lead a group of girls to furthur their education, which is very dangerous considering her circumstances. The radical group soon strikes back, attempting to assassinate a only 15 y/o activist. Malala survived a shot to the head, and dident let that stop her and dident let that stop her from advocating for womens education. She faced many tragities, making sacrafices and even putting her life on the line. Malala overcame many obsticals and those obsticals are one of the reasons she is so globally
A hero is defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. As a child, Malala was raised in Pakistan by an advocate of education: her father. He ran a school that she attended throughout her childhood. But when Malala was only eleven, many Pakistani schools were being targeted by an extremist group called the Taliban. Due to these attacks, only 44% of Pakistan’s population are literate. Malala refused to stay silent about the injustices that were being inflicted upon her Pakistani brothers and sisters. Instead,
One of the reasons why Malala is a hero because she shows courage and bravery through her actions. First of all, Malala kept going to her school even though death threats kept coming to her and to her family. This shows that Malala is brave because she did not care what the Taliban did she cared more about her education even though the Taliban kept threatening her. Secondly, when the Taliban began to attack the girl’s school, she gave a speech and the title of her
Malala is a great activist for our world. For example, she has a big part of the inspiration for education. In her homeland, Taliban told girls they weren’t allowed to go to school or dance, play outside, sing etc. She believed girls had much of a right to go to school as boys do. Malala started to go to the boys school as one of her own rights. At this point, the Malala become a target to the Taliban. She was fourteen and the Taliban struck her on the bus with a shot in the head. She was hit in the head but missed a little bit by her skull. She came back strong at sixteen years and showed she will never give up for girls rights. “ I speak with my voice” she would say in an interview. Just because we have feet and hands, knees do not
Heroes display courage and bravery, if not right away, in all situations. For example, Jessica and Derek Simmons were in Florida when they saw 10 people stuck in a rip current and no one helping. They created a human chain with about 80 people and swam into the rip current and pulled them out one-by-one. In the Washington Post they wrote, “She was a strong swimmer and fearless in the face of adversity.” She could have gotten stuck in the current but she did it anyways. Another example of a hero displaying is Welles Crowther. During 9/11, Welles ran back in forth into the towers, leading the people stuck in the building out. He saved countless lives but lost his life in the process. In New York Times “They describe a calm, strong authoritative figure who they followed down.” He was clam in the face of danger. He died a hero and will be remembered as one. Every time disaster strikes one can see a hero rise out of
Mike Dilbeck put our thoughts of a hero on paper, and captured them perfectly. He speaks of a hero as someone who "transforms compassion into a heroic action." He says that a hero will take risks for their cause and volunteered willingly for service for someone else. Finally a hero doesn't expect gifts and material gains in return. Two heroes fit these guidelines. First, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a women's rights activist in the 1840s, argued for women, she made silenced people finally have a voice, and a loud one at that. Second, is Malala Yousafzai, a fighter for education, she took bullets for going to school and speaking out, but her opinions are far from being quiet. Based on Mike Dilbeck's hero description, Malala Yousafzai is more of a
Sharing her father’s passion for learning, Malala Yousafzai is a young, children’s and women’s rights activist in the Middle East. As a young girl, Malala Yousafzai defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. After being targeted, Malala was shot in the head, however, she survived. Even with a target on her head, Malala stood up for her rights and continued to defy the Taliban.
In 2012, word of Malala Yousafzai spread around the world. She had been shot in the head for standing up for girls’ education. Malala is a teenager who displays many attributes that all heroes show, no matter what time period they are in or how old they are. These attributes consist of courage, determination, and selflessness.
In October 9th, 2012 Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head because she was going to a school women could not go to. So the local Taliban shot her in the head at a bus stop, luckily she survived and to this day. She has been fighting for women’s rights. This makes her a hero because she is standing up to something a normal person would not do. The text states that “After a year after being shot she is going to stand up to her goal” and her goal was “I
The teen activist who is standing up for childrens (Mostly woman's) right to have an education.Malala was shot on the left side of her head and the bullet traveled down her neck. Malala refused to die. Malala run’s an organization called “Malala Fund” to help children in Pakistan have an education. A hero makes the world around them a better place, but only through pure and just ways. They never compromise to the wants of others. But people don’t realize this. They think becoming stupidly brave, and trying to beat up criminals makes them a hero! Sure, they have pure intentions and, make the world safer. But they do so through unjust and cruel means. Not heroic. But once society believes this ‘hero’ image it opens up a Pandora’s Box of issues. Newspapers slap the title of hero onto every brave soul who helps a kitten out of a tree. People vote for a president who promises to destroy the lives of millions around the world. We believe that heroes surround us and that they will always save the day But in reality, we can’t count on heroes. We just can’t. We can’t count on something when we don’t even know it’s true nature. Popular culture has so overused the word ‘hero’ that people no longer recognize a real hero when they see it. The ‘hero’ has become tainted by violence and a Machiavellian attitude of anything goes.
Heroism can be defined by those who are courageous and continuously strive for the greater good. As seen on Batman, a young man who leaves his luxurious lifestyle to salvage his community from evildoers, “It's not who I am underneath... but what I *do*... that defines me.” During a dark time at Gotham, Bruce Wayne defended the peace and impartiality of the residents of his community. All of his hardships were what led the city to be safe from the tribulations of the world. Another example to clarify the definition of a true hero is from the story, where a soldier loses his leg after a terrible war in Afghanistan, “but they never told me I was doing a good job for fear that I might get complacent-“Tristan Eugene Segers who battled for his country,
For decades, I have been obsessed with Batman. There I said it! In the ’60’s I watched everyday, at the same Bat time on the same Bat channel the Caped Crusader [Adam West] give The Joker and other villains their due justice.
Heroism is bravery. “Meaning "man who exhibits great bravery” in any course of action is from 1660s in English.’’ (etymonline.com) Malala Yousafzai is a hero because she stands up for what she believes in and she demonstrates bravery. “As a child, she became an advocate for girls' education, which resulted in the Taliban issuing a death threat against her. On October 9, 2012, a gunman shot Malala when she was traveling home from school. She survived, and has continued to speak out on the importance of education.’’ (biography.com). Malala was very brave because she stands up for what she believes in even at a young age. Continuing to fight for what you believe in even when you are issuing a death threat is incredibly brave. “In order to hide her identity, she used the name Gul Makai. However, she was revealed to be the BBC blogger in December of that year. With a growing public platform, Yousafzai continued to speak out about her right, and the right of all women, to an education.’’ (biography.com) Bravery is all about perseverance, and Malala shows bravery with continuing to speak out about her rights and women’s rights even though her identity
Many people believe that the act of courage lies within each individual, and these acts of courage can be brought out by three possible cause. First, provocation. Often times this is seen in movies where the villain kidnaps and threatens to kill the hero’s family. More often than not, the hero finds it within himself to put aside his fears and overcome near impossible odds to save the day. In Batman begins, Batman found the courage to fight criminals after his parents were killed. The second cause is a purpose. In 2001, the Twin Towers fell to terrorist attacks. Military enlistments reached all-time highs as many men and women joined the armed forces. For many of these people, the prospect of serving their country, and gaining revenge for their
