Behavioral Psychology Applied

Psychology can be applied to everyday life in many ways. The three main ways Psychology applies to my life is through motivation and emotion, Stress and health and Psychological therapies. These topics of psychology are the ones that best describe my life. When most people think of psychology they think of therapists and psychological disorders. Psychology is much more than that and applies to everyone’s life in some form.

The principles and theories of Social Psychology are important and useful in assessing behaviors in situations. These social psychological principles and their applications can be seen in fictional films which can also be attributed to everyday life. One such film that holds certain social psychological perspectives is Will Gluck’s 2010 production of Easy A. A film about high school student Olive Penderghast and how a sudden change in popularity and financial status, after an unintentional rumor about how she supposedly lost her virginity to a college guy spread through the entire her school. The film draws on the behavioral connections of pronounced hussy Olive Penderghast and her English class’s assigned reading of The Scarlet Letter.

Catalina came to counseling seeking help in dealing with traumatic events from her past, which has led her to problems in her marriage, mistrust in others, and high levels of anxiety. She is having a difficult time letting go of the past. Catalina was physically abused by her aunt from the age for 10-14. The only male figure ever present in her life was her aunt’s son Roberto, who attempted to sexually abuse her when she was 14 years old. Although her mother was aware of the situation, she did nothing to prevent it or stand up for her. Her relationship with her mother was pleasant prior to the abuse. Because her mother failed to protect her from her own family, the dynamics of their relationship changed. She feels that if she cannot trust her own family, she cannot trust anyone to protect her. Her lack of trust for other, and paranoia that someone would do the same to her young daughters had led her to become overprotective and overbearing. These actions have strained Catalina and her husband Jason’s marriage; they are on the brink of divorce.

There are a few different approaches to how psychologists view things. These include but are not limited to, the behavioral, humanistic, and cognitive approaches. Each approach treats things differently. These different approaches stem from psychologists who didn’t think each other was right and so they each came up with their own way of viewing things. None of these approaches are wrong, but they just differ from one another. Jake was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, but these three approaches have different views on the origins and the treatment of his anxiety.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been used to promote learning and change of behavior using basic principles of behavior analysis. How might ABA be used in your own life? Provide at least one example.

The exercise I have chosen to explore is playing volleyball, something I did a lot of in high school. In order to fully break down exactly what is going on in the brain when playing the game, each aspect would need to be broken down and analyzed. In this paper I will be analyzing receiving (from the opponent or teammate) and passing the ball (to the opponent or teammate), In each of these actions, there is a certain amount of planning and execution involved, along with some reflexes that come into play when there isn’t enough time to plan, as volleyball is a very fast moving game that involves many other people’s actions that are sometimes hard to judge.

As the number of children with autism and other developmental disability diagnoses continue to rise across the nation, there is a greater need for comprehensive services and programs designed to address the needs of these individuals. At Advocate Illinois Masonic Pediatric Developmental Center, the behavioral psychology program is one of five programs aimed to assist children with disabilities to be able to function across environments. Behavioral issues are a common occurrence in children diagnosed with a developmental disability. Some behaviors can be easily redirected, while more aggressive, self-injurious and harmful behaviors can sometimes lead to hospitalization. The main objective of the behavioral psychology program is to provide parent-focused training to implement strategies and skills to reduce behaviors and the amount of hospitalizations of children with disabilities.

Utilizing cognitive behavioral theory, the first goal that I have identified for Ms. Arlington is that she will maintain sobriety in order to maintain reunification. This goal reflects Ms. Arlington’s person goal of “keeping custody of her son” and “stop using drugs. The next goal that I have identified for Ms. Arlington is that she will experience fewer cognitive distortions. This goal reflects Ms. Arlington’s personal goal to “stop being so hard on herself”.

I would like to work towards becoming a board certified behavioral analysis because I feel that people with autism and their families need more support and I am very passionate about helping these families. People with autism spectrum disorder have amazing personalities. If they are given the opportunity to share that with the world, more people can appreciate them as a person instead of a disability. My goal is to work to write behavioral plans for children using applied behavioral analysis. ABA is a way of teaching people through positive reinforcement. It is believed that if a person receives positive reinforcement, they will repeat the behavior (Winerman, 2004).

In the next case study, Jackie is a 23 year-old who was bit by a dog which required stitches when she was only 3. She remembers what happened in detail and the psychological distress from the trauma causes her to avoid dogs at all cost, however; she is engaged to a dog breeder and will need to learn to how to get past this before she gets married in which dogs will be a constant part of her life. Every single human being goes through periods of feeling anxious or overwhelmed. It’s a part of the natural human behavior. Some of us go through bouts of depression that makes it hard for us to even get out of bed. Sometimes we suffer from really serious anxiety around things like test taking, flying, lots of things. All of which are brutalizing our self-worth and affecting our daily performances in work and life. At this point, one would be ready for professional help and, lucky for us, we have a lot of options. Psychotherapy includes a therapist using a range of techniques to help a patient overwhelm troubles, gain insight, and achieve personal growth. There is a variety of techniques to that experts analyze and treat ailments of the mind. They each create their own experience for a person looking for help and in fact, some approaches are better suited for treating certain psychological conditions than others. Psychotherapy is commonly grouped into three major schools or orientations, which are humanistic, cognitive, and behavioral. I will also be discussing the areas of agreement and disagreement between these groups.

Behavioral neuroscience or biological psychology employs the principles of brain pathology to the study of human behavior through genetic, physiological, and developmental operations, as well as, the brain’s capacity to change with experience. Since the second world war, crime was largely attributed to mostly economic, political, and social factors, along with what psychologists termed at the time, the “weak character” of mental disturbance, and brain biology was rarely considered. However, new advances in neuroscience and technology have allowed a number of studies that link brain development, impairment, and injury to criminal violence. This emerging field of psychology explores the brain at a microscopic level, focusing studies on the roles that the brain’s neurons, circuitry, neurotransmitters, and basic biological processes play in defining and molding all human behavior.
