My Berea: A Freshman’s Interaction with a Berea Education Berea College demonstrates an understanding of the complexity of a person by the interdisciplinary educational approach shown in the course catalog, which will lead a student, like me, to success after graduation. Berea’s approach to education relies on the principle of educating the whole person instead of simply teaching a skill. This education lends assistance to aspects of life that a non-Berea experience would not provide. Those aspects include understanding how to interpret and expand the world around us. The tools necessary to such an education are Berea’s extensive general education and perspective requirements. Each of the above, and their related corollaries, connect to create a Berea graduate who is aware of and competent enough to meet life’s spiritual, intellectual, and social demands. This philosophy is one that I am only beginning to interact with; however, my foresight into my next four years at Berea stands as a potent example of a Berea College education in action. Education at Berea means more than simply being taught to competently pursue a career in law. The education I am receiving here means discovering my identity, and how that identity will correlate to my future. The starting point of my journey originates in the 2017-2018 Course Catalog, where learning to “develop an openness to and knowledgeable appreciation” of the vastness of the world are shown in the college’s general education
Over the course of this semester, I have learned a lot about who I am. I have discovered things that I did not know about myself. Choosing Spelman College as an institute to education myself at was only the first step that I took. Overcoming the challenges that it has brought is the second step that I am yet taking. I am slowly, but surely transforming into a Free Thinking Woman.
I define myself as a curious researcher and reflective practitioner who perceives legal education as a combination of passion and practicality. Whereas my idealistic side wants to thoroughly understand the development of global legal ethics, my pragmatic side asks what actions should be taken by lawyers to solve international legal problems. Hence, Penn Law’s core strengths in providing a remarkably interdisciplinary learning experience and the program of Legal Practice Skills will be the bridge to my academic and professional aspirations.
Because of the remedial classes, Keene then began to believe that she can attain whatever she needed to become successful through life experiences. Although, this belief did not last long, she returned to community college and attained a higher persistence in completing a two-year degree. As a result of Keene’s persistence and studiousness, she acquired a new perception of academia at Columbia College, “I met two professors, Ted Hamilton and Paula Clarke, who fundamentally challenged my worldview, my expectation of academia, my sense of own academic potential, and my understanding of responsibilities as a citizen.” (Keene 65) It is after taking these courses is when Keene came to the conclusion that colleges need to challenge its students intellect. After achieving this new perspective, Keene was able to transfer to several universities, as well as an ivy league university. Later on her life, Keene experienced the other side of the spectrum. She began teaching at Columbia College,
In Barszczs’ essay conclusion, he gives poetically clear examples why students will benefit from taking campus-based courses. He stresses the value of face to face interaction between the students and the faculty. Being late to a class, or missing an assignment has a stronger effect if the student has to personally interact with the instructor. Barszcz defines the word education as a process of “drawing out”, stating that campus life can “draw out, from within a person, qualities of intellect and character that would have otherwise remained hidden or dormant.” (8).
The solid set of skills I have amassed through my volunteer, professional and academic career all have equipped me with the drive, work ethic, and capability to succeed in law school. I wholeheartedly believe that the University of Windsor, with its unique focus on research, providing a broader perspective on the legal process and theory, is the school that I can meet my full potential. And more importantly, the legal education offered at the University of Windsor will prepare me to fully and effectively act as both an advocate and advisor to any client or entity I go on to
We are quiet and focused, erratic and spontaneous, power-hungry and arrogant, self-loathing and snobby. But we, students, are merely people who want to learn. Though Delbanco believes that a Liberal Arts education today might be riddled with inaccessibility and uselessness, I know, as a student engulfed in the liberal arts to the fullest, that such an education will provide students with the ability to “fight out among and within themselves…. And discover that self-interest need not be at odds with concern for one another” (177). Through interdisciplinary study and educational freedom, students can dine quite well on a balanced and colorful buffet plate of
On our visit to the University Of Redlands, My guide walked backwards facing us the entire time. While walking backwards our guide made a special effort to connect with us, without seeing, venturing in the unknown. I chose the University of Redlands because of its academic rigor, diverse student population, and the beautiful campus. My interests are Business Administration, Political Science, Pre-law, Corporate and Sports Contractual Law. Attending at this remarkable University would allow me to invest in myself and would help change the world perspectives around me. A career in law will enable me to help people who are less fortunate and contribute to an established law firm. While attending the University of Redlands, I intend to respect
The three purposes and missions of higher education are education, research, and public service. The first one to be addressed is education. In his paper, “Goals: The Intended Outcomes of Higher Education,” author Bowen (1977) has stated education is “not only the academic curricula, classes, and laboratories, but also all those influences upon students flowing from association with peers and faculty members and from the many and varied experiences of campus” (p. 24). Educating students is an important mission for higher education, but educating students is not limited to their academics. The mission for higher education involving education can be categorized as cognitive learning, affective development, and practical competence (Bowen, 1977, p. 27). While cognitive learning is based on expanding on students’ knowledge, affective development and practical competence are based on the overall being of the student. The intent of affective development is to help enhance
She recalls the struggles, the fun, her failures and even her success in the end (Harding, 2011). The personal story shows the real road it takes with decisions we make “when entering college, Harding wrote that she began college because she felt it was expected of her”(Harding, 2011). College students often make choices based on what they perceive as pressure to do so by others like councilors, parents and even society. They enter college thinking this is what my plan should look like and not making choices that are the best for them. Harding said that in the end “ we all become graduates of one of the finest universities in the world- and already, nobody much cared how we got there”(Harding,2011). To me this shows that even if you pass by the skin of your teeth, you can still fail in the end. A diploma is not the end result that maters the most. Students need to choose colleges that appeal to their needs and goals and not just go to get a diploma. If students spend no time studying weather boarded or not liking their studies, then what difference does the diploma make in the end. Students would just have a degree that often goes unused in life but the costs is ever mounting to these students. The financial cost, the cost of failure, loss of energy and time, causes many students to never finish their education or even to avoid going in the
I enjoyed reading this book a lot due to the fact that it influenced me in many ways. The first way this book influenced me was how strong hope is. We underestimate many times how strong hope is. We usually complain and complain and never even think about hope. We just get down on ourselves because of the things that we don’t like. Let’s face it, we are lazy. If Ishmael Beah would have been lazy when he was going through his journey than he wouldn’t have achieved what he has so far. He stated “My eyes widened, a smile forming on my face. Even in the middle of the madness there remained that true and natural beauty, and it took my mind away from my current situation as I marveled at this sight.” This shows that Ishmael Beah was able to find beauty but how? It was through hope. He always reminded himself of his childhood and he had hope that it would be the same as it was before by finding his family. We need to start to incorporate hope into our lives. Hope will allow us to survive the hard times that we are going through. Hope allowed Ishmael Beah to survive so why can’t it help us survive something that is not even close to the level of what he went through. A great example for students where they could use more hope is testing especially AP tests. How? How will this even produce positive effects? How will this even help the student? Hope will definitely allow you to get a better score. When you have hope in yourself then you feel better about yourself instantly. This
A faith-based education can help me expand my worldview. Working towards an advanced education at Loma Linda University will further expand both my personal and professional worldview. For example, if I am admitted to the MSOT program, I will be placed in the occupational therapy cohort that may be composed of people from different parts of the world. Together, we will work towards achieving a common goal. As a result, both my personal and professional perspective will cultivate through experience and learning from staff, faculty, and peers. Nevertheless, I am confident, I will understand how occupational therapy functions through a spiritual view.
“It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down.” Spoken by David Foster Wallace at the 2005 Kenyon graduation ceremony. The purpose of his speech was to validate how important a liberal arts education is and how it will affect the rest of their lives.
Self-perspective is unavoidable because the senses are at the heart of every experience—where it physically takes place in relation to the mind, what is its purpose for the mind, what is the mind’s role, and so on. In reality, events happen through the combined effort of every person with this same mentality, and the true value of a liberal arts education is providing students with the ability to control their thinking and use that power to deal with problems in the perspective of the world. “It’s the automatic way that I experience the boring, frustrating, crowded parts of adult life when I’m operating on the automatic, unconscious belief that I am the center of the world, and that my immediate needs and feelings are what should determine the world’s priorities” (205-206). A liberal arts education teaches students to break through the natural barrier of thinking, and handle the surprises of life through the ability to cope using different perspectives. In sum, Wallace views a liberal arts education as not only the best form of preparing students for future careers, but a method to
The craft of writing is a complex one, filled with characters, setting, plot and surprises. A book will take you on a journey through many different lands real or fake, this journey is filled with twists and turns stopping at the end of the road. Ishmael Beah is a writer who took readers on this journey twice.
After watching the Boudreau’s emotional plea for her daughter’s safe return, I could catch some evidences that she was faking the public. There are facial expressions, body movements and verbal expression that indicate she was lying.
