Abstract
This assignment is submitted as partial requirement of Global Trade. This report depicts the sequences of Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall, erected November 13, 1961, served to separate communist East Germany from Western influences. Intended to "protect" East Germans, the wall actually was erected to prevent them from leaving the country. The Wall finally came down August 13, 1989, reuniting families and symbolizing the end of the cold war was near.
The initial plans for Allied occupation of Germany were prepared in 1944 in London by the European Advisory Commission. In this agreement, Germany would be divided into four occupational zones governed by Great Britain, the United States, France, and the Soviet Union. The city of

The Berlin Wall was erected in the dead of night and for 28 years kept East Germans from fleeing to the West. Its destruction, which was nearly as instantaneous as its creation, was celebrated around the world.
2.1 A Divided Berlin
At the end of World War II, the Allied powers divided conquered Germany into four zones, each occupied by either the United States, Great Britain, France, or the Soviet Union (as agreed at the Potsdam Conference). The same was done with Germany's capital city, Berlin.
As the relationship between the Soviet Union and the other three Allied powers quickly disintegrated, the cooperative atmosphere of the occupation of Germany turned competitive and aggressive. Although an eventual reunification of Germany had been intended, the new relationship between the Allied powers turned Germany into West versus East, democracy versus Communism.
In 1949, this new organization of Germany became official when the three zones occupied by the United States, Great Britain, and France combined to form West Germany (the Federal Republic of Germany). The zone occupied by the Soviet Union quickly followed by forming East Germany (the German Democratic Republic).
This same division into West and East occurred in Berlin. Since the city of Berlin had been situated entirely within the Soviet zone of occupation, West Berlin became an island of democracy within Communist East Germany.

The Berlin Wall was erected on August 13, 1961. After World War II, Germany was divided into four Allied occupation zones; Berlin, the German capital, was also divided into occupation sectors, even though it was located deep within the Soviet zone (History.com). In post war Germany, Cold War tensions grew, from situations such as the Berlin Blockade and the US’ Berlin Airlift (History.com). Not only were Cold War tensions growing but East Germany was now under a communist system (History.com). West Germany was in better condition because, unlike in East Germany, it received financial aid from the Marshall Plan (Burkhardt, H). Another big problem was the two different currencies used; West German currency, which was also use in West Berlin,
After World War Two ended, Germany was in a horrible state. America would fly in all kinds of supplies on an average of one plane every three minutes (Levy 11). America, Great Britain, and France created three zones with democratic governments in
Following the Second World War, Germany had split into two states: East and West Germany. East Germany fell behind economically and forced its citizenry from moving to West Germany. West Germany, conversely, had become overwhelmingly successful. West Germany had established itself as one of the world’s wealthiest nations. Finally, in 1990, full German unity succeeded in bringing both West and East Berlin together.
When WWII came to a close in 1945, Stalin’s military forces raced to Berlin, establishing their government in many countries along the way. Berlin, the capital of Germany, was a gem amongst the spoils in the eyes of the United States and the Soviets, and both of the superpowers wanted to control the German capital. In the end, Germany and Berlin, although well inside the German border, were divided into four zones. The Soviets received the east, and the West was divide amongst the allies (France, Britain, and the United States).
To refresh your memory, at the end of World War II, the Allied powers divided Germany into four different zones. Decided at the Potsdam Conference, each separate zone was controlled by The United States, Soviet Union, France, and Great Britain. (Rosenburg) But as the relationships between The Soviet Union and the rest of The Allied Powers quickly evaporated, aggression and power became the main focus. The United States, France, and Great Britain combined their zones, creating “West Germany”, and The Soviet controlled zoned turned into “East Germany” (Rosenburg). Being controlled by democratic nations, West Germany’s living conditions and economy were flourishing. Almost Miraculously. On the other
As World War II was ending in 1945, the territories owned by Germany were being divided. Once it was split, the nation was sectioned into four zones. The east of the country went to the Soviet Union, while the west went to the Allies. Even though Berlin was located in the Soviet part of the country, two agreements known as Yalta and Potsdam, split the city into sections.
On August 12, 1961, the Berlin Wall was built to separate East Berlin (German Democratic Republic) from West Berlin (The Federal Republic of Germany). The Wall has a “ 66 mile concrete section that was 3.6 metres high, with a further 41 miles of barbed wire fencing and more than 300 manned lookout towers”6 and was meant to separate superpowers Britain, France, and the United States from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). It lead to countless problems such as social separations, family breakages, starvation, deaths due to low living standards, hatred among politicians within a country, among others. The Berlin Wall perhaps helped the American policy of containment winning people's support.
The Berlin Wall was a symbol of division between two different political beliefs and two different ways of life. The population during this time was about 3.4 million. This started the Cold War and ended it. Just because of one mans (Nikita Khrushchev) approval to raise the wall; the citizens of Germany were forced to live twenty- eighty years without freedom. Berlin Wall also known as the “Iron Curtain” was ninety six miles long and twelve feet high. The Berlin Wall erected in the dead of night. Just past midnight, while Berliner’s were sleeping, crews of soldiers tore up the streets dug holes to set up concrete posts and fixed up barbed wire on top. Telephone wires were cut off between the wall. The Berlin Wall had very few openings. For example, the main access opening was called “Checkpoint Charlie”. It was used for allies personal and westerners to cross the border. It was decided during World War II when Germany lost, that Berlin was to be divided between America, France, and Great Britain. The Soviet Union started the war and wanted to spread communism around Eastern Europe and West Germany did not want that. This turning point was a physical symbol of the Cold War.
In 1948 three countries, USA, France and UK, held conference, where they discussed the issue of Germany and what to do next. They tackled issues such as the future of Germany, the control of the Ruhr area and the payment of reparations (Douglas R, 2013) A new conference of the three countries occurred in Frankfurt, where still dealt with the issue of Germany and came to an agreement on the division of it. In Washington was another meeting of ministers of the three countries, where they signed a document which confirmed the occupation policy of the three powers in Germany. (Douglas R, 2013)
After the conclusion of World War II, Germany was split into four sections, each occupied by the respective nations of France, Britain, America, and the Soviet Union. The Western nations of France, Britain, and the United States joined together and formed West Germany, while the communist U.S.S.R. maintained its own grip on East Germany.
Four Powers occupied these divided zones. They were the United States, USSR, France, and Britain.
After World War Two, Berlin as well as all of Germany was devastated and the city of Berlin was left in ruin as the German people unable to get electricity, gas, food, or even transportation.Disease became rampant in major cities. To stop the societal collapse of Germany, Britain, the United States, along with the Soviet Union who were called the European Advisory Commission gave aid to Germany and began to plan an occupation On May 23,1949, the country was divided into three zones andt he Soviets controlled the eastern region of Germany while Britain, and the United States controlled the western areas of Germany. The city of Berlin became apart of the border between the three regions. The city
The Berlin Wall was not built to simply deny freedom to East Germans under Soviet rule, but it served as a greater purpose. The wall was built to keep western fascist out of East Germany and letting them sabotage or weaken
August 13, 1961 Berlin, a thirteen foot concrete wall was being built to split Berlin into two, The East and The West. Some chose to stay, others left in fear of what was to come. A fifth of East Germany’s population had fled to the west, escaping the communist of the east. The wall left a tragic scar on all of Germany. Yet the wall could have been prevented, so why was the wall built? I will explain to you how the wall was built, through the discussion of East and West Germans’ relations and power struggles, what happened right before the wall was built, and the Berlin Wall being built.
In early September of 1945, Germany lay in total and utter ruin following World War 2. In the wake of a major defeat at the hands of the Allied Powers led by the United States, the future of Germany stood on precarious footing. In the post war Reconstruction period which followed, Germany was divided into zones and placed under Allied occupation. Within short order Germany became a country of two nations: West and East Germany.
