Southampton, Virginia in 1831 was a remote and a pretty vapid place. As most southerners, citizens of Southampton had a strong correlation of social status according to their amount of slave ownership. Most slave owners were precautions of their slave’s lifestyles. They did not want a sudden revolt or uprising such as the infamous Santo Domingo event that occurred in the 1700’s to happen in the south. But of course they could not prevent these uprisings to occur in the future such as Nat Turner’s fierce rebellion in 1831. Slaves at this point were tired of their mistreatment and abuse. She, of course, was flabbergasted of this knowledge he contained. Nat’s parents supported and praised his intelligence. In the book it states the following, “Nat’s parents, his grandmother, and the other Turner slaves all agreed that he was “intended for some great purpose.” ” Since Nat’s playmates knew about his brilliance, they wanted to use it to their advantage. His playmates’ plans for his brilliance weren’t subjects that he specifically was interested; he thought that his brilliance needed to be enforced in a better manner. His master, Benjamin approved of his literacy and as well encouraged the boy. He encouraged the boy to study a more religion based literacy which included Nat reading the Bible and taking him out to prayer meetings. Master Benjamin was very proud him. From this point and on, Nat would be encountering unexpected events. First, his father ran away from the Turner place, leaving Nat and his family behind. Also, in late 1810, Master Benjamin died of a typhoid which became an epidemic around the surroundings. Every slave, including Nat, now was the property of Benjamin’s son, Samuel. Master Samuel was a stricter master than Benjamin. This meant Nat’s literacy wasn’t on his master mind. To make matters worse for Nat, he has now turned 12, the age where slaves must go to work. In the Voices of Freedom, the passage explains the idea of American imperialism during the 1890s. It was written by a Filipino revolutionary and politician Emilio Aguinaldo. He was writing about the how the United States are taking over countries and limit their freedoms. Emilio's document was specifically describing the United States' occupation of the Philippines after the Spanish American War. Slavery and indentured servitude was the backbone of the Virginia economy. Slaves were considered an investment in the planter’s business and a necessity for success. The treatment of slaves was much the same as owning a piece of property or equipment. Slaves were not viewed as fellow human beings, quite the opposite they were of lesser status. Slaves and indentured servants grew tired of their treatment and responded with acts of rebellion. One such act was for the slaves and servants to run away. First of all, both Frederick Douglass and Nat Turner has a lot of similarities. Both were well-educated slaves, and education helped them to be different from other slaves. In fact, while learning to read and write, Douglass understood his real life of being a slave because he could develop his imagination and interpret what was happening around him. For example, at the end of the chapter two of his book “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, Written by Himself”, Douglass mentioned the slave song that he sang with other slaves when they were going to the Great House Farm which is the Colonel Lloyd’s plantation. America is the universal symbol of freedom. But is it really free? Does the history of the United States stay true to the ideas of our forefathers? Or has the definition been altered to fit American policies? Has freedom defined America? Or has America defined freedom? I believe America was at first defined by freedom, then after time, America defined freedom, altering the definition to fit the niche it fits in, but still keeping key components so it still seems to be staying true to the ideas of America’s founding fathers.

With this newly acquired knowledge, he began preaching the Old Testament to the other slaves, about what freedom meant and how they should fight for it. Nat felt as if he was driven into some corner of slavery from which there was no return, only his imagination was he free. Nat became very distant form the other slaves; it was like he was in another world. He fasted religiously and became well aquatinted with the spirits, and also claimed that they showed him visions in the sky. Nat began to read the Bible in depth and discovered the mockery that the whites made of it, while in reality the Bible was against human bondage. Nat had more visions as time went by such as the drops of blood on the corn. He finally got his vision after his sign from the eclipse. Eager and ready, Nat gathered a group of trusted fellow slaves and began to plot his insurrection.

The book educates readers on the difficult life slaves had in America during the 1800’s and the life of Nat Turner and the rebellion he lead. The book focuses on Nat’s life and the adversities as well as challenges slaves had to go through to survive. The psychological effects slaves had for the fault of the system they were unjustly born into or put in, affected their decision making every day; either by making them obey their masters or fight for their freedom and die, rather than continue living as a slave. In the case of Nat Turner, life as a slave caused him to lead a rebellion whose sole purpose was to kill all of the white people who lived in Southampton County, Virginia, and its surrounding areas. Unfortunately, Nat’s rebellion is what caused his death.
Nat grew up as a polite man who never do anything wronged to anyone and even became the slave preacher. This made the whites trust him. Joseph Travis saw him as the most behaved black and was even given credit to conduct unsupervised meetings in the church (Oates, 2009); which gave Nat room to explain his desire to revolt as asked for the people who could help him.
