As human beings we all have been exposed to emotional extremes. Some are worse than others. These emotional extremes are categorized into mood disorders. There are two different types of mood disorders, major depression disorder, and bipolar disorder. Major depressive disorder is a persistent state of hopeless depression (Myers 390). Bipolar disorder is an alternative between depression and overexcited hyperactivity (Myers 390). Providing more information and detail will give a better understanding of major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and understanding mood disorders. Things as simple as poor hygiene, poor psychical health, and overly dependent behavior can be a cause of depression (Mental Health, 1995-2014). More severe conditions can involve, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, anxiety and phobias, and need for care (Mental Health, 1995-2014). The first time someone may feel depressed could occur at any age from childhood to old age, the onset may be either acute or long term. People who have been depressed for only a few months are more likely to overcome it. Others who have dealt with depression for most of their life with never get over it. 40 percent of people who have a conic illness of depression overcome it (Mental Health, 1995-2014). There are things a person can do to help with a depression illness. Psychotherapy is one option. Psychotherapy is treatment of mental or emotional illness by talking about problems rather than by using medicine or drugs (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Things like vitamins or dietary supplements are all ineffective for helping with depression. Bipolar disorder is also known as manic-depressive illness. Manic-depressive illness is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the inability to carry out day-to-day tasks (Bipolar Disorder). Bipolar disorder is categorized with depression. When a depression episode ends, a happy, energetic, stated called mania follows (Myers 391). But not long after that do the depressed feelings return. There is not necessarily a cause for bipolar disorder, more like things are linked together to cause the illness. Research has also been done and discovered that bipolar disorder is sometimes passed through genetics (Bipolar Disorder). “Some imaging studies show how the brains of people with bipolar disorder may differ from the brains of healthy people or people with other mental disorders (Bipolar Disorder).” A MRI study found that the brain's prefrontal cortex in adults with bipolar disorder tends to be smaller, function less well compared to adults who don't have bipolar disorder (Bipolar Disorder). The symptoms found in bipolar disorder are sometimes mood disorders, which links back to depression. Feelings that are associated with bipolar disorder are always opposite of one another. Symptoms may also include change of habits. Doctors diagnose bipolar disorder using guidelines from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)
