1 What is coal? Coal is a substance we consider today a fossil fuel, created from all the dead plants millions of years ago. Coal is formed from prehistoric plants that when they die are not able to release the energy they built up from photosynthesis Typically the plants had fallen into large swamps and bogs, and then over time the dead plants lying on the bottom of the swamps and bogs were slowly covered with other dead plants and sediment build-up. Once buried the plants were subjected to high amounts of pressure and temperatures, which over long periods of time it becomes peat then eventually creates coal. We refer to coal as a “fossil fuel” today because it is created from prehistoric plants and the coal we have today has been millions of years since it was in plant form. Today we coal is still being created we just don’t fully recognize it because how long the process actually takes.
Coal: A Human History was written by Barbara Freese to focus on the history of coal and how mankind has used it as part of their lifestyle. Ever since the times when early nomads used the slash-and-burn method, coal has been around acting as jewelry for the Romans and as fuel for peasants and the noble class in Britain. Coal was in such high demand that many inventions were utilized for the convenience of retrieving it from intolerable conditions such as vacuums and the construction of more efficient underground tunnels. The book gives insight of how this small stone has been so vital to humans that they were able to adapt to the ways coal best functions.
The process to mine the coal is quite complex. First, surveyors are called on site to document the layout of the land so that in can be restored to
The discovery of “Fools Gold” is what led to the enriched and powerful development of the mining company. A Baltimore native John Detrick managed to hike along the Quantico Creek and discovered something shiny in the water which just so happened to be pyrite, also known as Iron Sulfide. With this discovery there came three shafts that lived pyrite. The Cabin Branch Pyrite Mine was the only pyrite mine in the area and really helped out the locals by boosting the economy and providing jobs for farmers who worked as laborers for the mine and then went home to tend to their farm after working. The company was such a big success that by 1917, Virginia produced more pyrite than any other state and continued to provide profitable income to families and businesses located in the area. This would be Batestown and Hickory Ridge at the time in history. With a booming economy, the mining company was able to rake in even more of a profit when World War I struck due to the fact that it was able to produce gunpowder during the mid-nineteenth century. The Cabin Branch Mining Company not only produced an income for the locals by pyrite carrying the main ingredient sulfur that was necessary to produce products like gunpowder, bleach, textiles, soap, medicine, etc. but it also contributed to the remarkable advantages the park would make with its preservation of the mine

The very first open-pit mines that were built in the world started around when men began to develop tools and constructing massive stone monuments to their gods. They were known as quarries. Quarries are open-pit mines that produce building materials and dimension stone, such as granite, marble, limestone, and other tangible rock building materials. However, these open-pit mines produced little to no pollution at all because the technology to extract every last gram of ore from rack has not been developed. The process basically involves pulverizing every rock that comes out of a mine with any trace of ore within it. This produces what is known as tailings. Tailings are one of the biggest pollutants of the world to date. They are so toxic that they have to be mixed with water to produce sludge and are pumped into ponds (known as tailings ponds) so that they are rendered “obsolete”.
