Black Friday is flipping the Bird
The biggest shopping day of the year is known as “Black Friday”. This is when loads of people all around the country gather around to shop store sales everywhere before Christmas time settles in. “Stores began to use the term in the 1970s because the day after Thanksgiving marked the start of the profitable holiday shopping season…” (Zillman). According to Amanda Nicholson this term may go back even earlier into the 1960s. Black Friday was how police officers described the day after Thanksgiving because residents from the city and near suburbs marched the stores of Philadelphia in search of gifts for the holidays (Zillman). The sale has since then tragically morphed from the early first development, changing ever-so drastically. Every year stores open earlier practically flipping the bird to Thanksgiving in a way that is detrimental to history. Black Friday should be held only on its original specified date of the Friday after Thanksgiving so that it does not interfere in any way with the holiday gatherings because it takes employees away from their families and friends diminishing the value of Thanksgiving as a whole.
This year most stores decided they would open on Thanksgiving. For most, Black Friday makes or breaks annual earnings (Zillman). Do these high-end retailers know that they are actually taking employees away from their families? The answer is yes, but do they care?
Black Friday is the following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many workers have the day off as part of the Thanksgiving holiday, this increases the number of potential shoppers. Retailers often decorate for the Christmas and holiday season weeks beforehand. Many retailers open extremely early, with most of the retailers typically opening at 5 A.M. or even earlier. Retailers use Black Friday to kick off the holiday season to use much of their products to go from the red to the black.
Quindlen starts her essay by stating that at a Wal-Mart in Valley Stream, New York, a worker was trampled to death by a horde of excited shoppers during Black Friday; the day after Thanksgiving when stores hold massive sales for the holiday season (Par. 2). She then goes on to talk about credit card debt and gives various examples of people buying different versions of items they
Historically, the department store affected every facet of social and economic life in America. The rise of the department store from the mid-1850s to the end of the 19th century was a major revolution for business and society. It revolutionized the shopping experience and created an entirely new view of ordinary retail stores. Endless categories of items from jewelry and accessories to home goods and furniture were available to all customers under one roof. Department stores found success in the early years, because they were selling more than just “products.” They were selling an entire experience to the American consumer. Known for their low prices, convenience, experience, and variety, department stores emerged as the iconic establishments of their time. These stores became mainstream institutions in downtown areas. Some department stores, such as Filene’s, even had restaurants and tearooms located inside the building. They had services like photo studios and special events like fashion shows and parades. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is still a widely popular event today, originating in
In addition, within the stores there are so many areas sections off with lines for their own for specific items such as laptops, Ipads, and other expensive items that are very limited in the quantity a store even receives. The insanity of the consumers showing up hours before the store even opens or sales even began made me step back and wonder if it is really worth the few bucks of savings. I have seen consumers rushing to be the first in line and closest to the pallets and racks of the items still covered up. It is crazy people actually start taking the boxes apart to look what inside while waiting for the sale time to start. I do not recommend bringing your kids to shop, because consumers can be rude and very pushy. Also, some stores even announce specials that are only advertised in the store during the Black Friday sale times. All these things seem to just send consumers into and even bigger frenzy.
Black Friday is a day when people shop. Thanksgiving is a day for being with family. I believe that these two shouldn’t mix. Some people say that they would lose customers to other stores. In reality, many stores don’t open on Thanksgiving, so you would not be losing anything to them. Also, workers need family time.
It is called Black Friday because it is the shopping day after Thanksgiving. So many people went shopping that there was so many traffic accidents. It was first recorded in 1966 by Earl Apfelbaum. In his ad, he said, "'Philadelphia police department call it Black Friday because it is the Friday after thanksgiving. On Black Friday the stores are always mobbed from open to close. Black Friday crowds get in to violence over who gets what. On 2012 there was a hunting sale the cops had to shoot a shop lifter who dragged a cop into the vehicle.
Black Friday has become a tradition for many families in America. For me, I do not quite understand the idea of spending time with a whole bunch of my thanksgiving with a whole bunch of crazy and price driven consumers at a Wal-Mart, target, etc. In this Inhabitat article, it talks about how Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI) will close their doors for the second year in a row on Black Friday. REI is encouraging their customers and noncustomers to spend their Black Friday outside with family and friends. REI is running a campaign with the social media hash tag (#) #OptOutisde and Will You Go Out With Me?
After an eventful day of celebrating Thanksgiving with beloved family and friends, millions of Americans head out at a late hour to snag the cheapest deals of the year. The “American holiday,” Black Friday, draws approximately 164 million Americans to trendy stores all across America (CBS News). The chaotic crowds begin their night-long shopping excursion in the late evening of Thanksgiving, leaving family and friends behind to hunt for the latest trends. One of the big brand names which utilizes Black Friday to draw in customers is Macy’s. Macy’s, a reputable clothing store, produced a Black Friday commercial, “Screamers” in the Fall of 2011.
My heart begins to pound like a drum in my ears as the workers start to tear the plastic off of the many displays lining the aisles. People begin to rev their engines as if they were cars waiting for a green light to go. Before the workers could even get the plastic off of the displays people began attacking the inventory like starving animals in the safari. With each item I touch it is instantly ripped out of my grasp. Leaving me exhausted and fired with rage and desperation. Because Black Friday only comes once a year, people’s inner savage radiates through them uncontrollably.
Black Friday sales come along with extra effort and expense that aren’t worth it. Advertisements, employees, and money are all part of the game. Does this expense and extra planning time bring additional profit? Adrienne Yih
This Thanksgiving I was confronted with a choice that i’ve never been given before. After contemplating whether to leave my home and it’s occupants early to go to the mall with my girlfriend or to remain with my family and friends for Thanksgiving dinner, I decided to go with the latter option and asked permission to go Black Friday shopping. Unfortunately, my decision was made for me by my matriarchal mother and I was forced to endure the tortures brought upon me by small talk and a burnt turkey. This year, several stores and businesses chose to open their doors early on Thanksgiving evening to kick off Black “Friday.” The decision to open stores earlier was not only an unforeseen decision but a clever one as well. Because stores are opening earlier, the Black Friday rush can become manageable, reduce unemployment, and offer an alternative option to bonding with family that doesn’t involve awkward family greetings and stuffing one’s face until he/she falls into a deep food coma.
Many people who have experience what it’s like to shop on Black Fridays don’t even bother to attend a stressful day and much rather prefer to stay at home. First of all, black Friday consist of reduced prices which gets people to camp outside or wait for numerous of hours in line before stores open for business. The lines are dramatically long enough to wrap around stores and the wait can be frustrating as well. Black Friday is expected with crazy bargains, pushing, and shoving elbows once the doors burst open. In this case, black Friday brings out the worst in people ,especially to those who are really dedicated on scoring for good deals and low prices. Yet over the years black Friday only seems to get worse and worse because of these
In 1858 in New York City on the cross streets of 14th and 6th avenues begin the legendary retail chain known as Macy’s. This is a company that is ever ingrained in the American consciousness. During Thanksgiving every year we all wake up and before our day of gluttony and football watching we all turn the television channel to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Where millions of people gather while a parade of balloons, artists, musicians, and companies wind their way to 34th street in anticipation of the Christmas season. At the time every child waits for Santa Claus to cap off the parade in a grand fashion.
Black Friday. In the United States, the friday following Thanksgiving is one where every shop in the country participates in stupendous sales, and the population forks over billions on this one occasion. This displays incredible hypocrisy: exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have, the masses trample each other and bring out their most violent side just for low priced prodicts. That is the effect of consumerism.
People may get caught up in the excitement of the day, and that can help them to spend even more money. While waiting in line, customers at the front of the line seem to be excited and happy. However, at the end of the line, customers appear to be more frustrated and anxious. Some consumers plan their Black Friday shopping trips weeks in advance. There are many websites available for people to view Black Friday advertisements online, before they are supposed to be released to the public. Walmart has tried year after year for the advertisements not to be leaked, but they usually end up on these websites before they are supposed to (4 Years Strong: Walmart Sends Another Cease & Desist, 2011). Stores may not want to have their advertisements released early for a couple of reasons. First, consumers having the ability to research products and having too much time to explore all of their options may mean that consumers will not make as many spontaneous purchases on Black Friday. They also do not want to have their competition see their deals, and then have them beat their prices. Having the advertisements earlier though means consumers are able to plan what stores they want to go to, which may lead to less chaos on the actual day. People are motivated by saving money on Black Friday. Some consumers may even see it as a competition. For some, because there is only a limited selection available for many of the items that are
