This book informs the reader about bog bodies and how crucial they are to scientists because they’re a journey to the past. Bog bodies are bodies that were deposited in a bog shortly after death, they were then naturally preserved in the bog. To clarify why they’re so important, bog bodies are usually so well preserved that their skin, intestines and other parts of their body remain. Scientists study them and they are able to find when they died, using radiocarbon analysis, and how they died which is only possible it’s not a skeleton because certain wounds can only be seen on skin and not on bones. There was a section in that text that impacted me, it was: “With new tests and procedure, with determination and perhaps some luck, scientists may …show more content…
Scientists look at only a few apparatus to discover additional information about the past, they analyze fossils, artifacts, preserved bodies, and ancient architecture. With bog bodies gone, that leaves a miniscule amount of items to study. Artifacts or items belonging to ancient people don’t provide tremendous amounts of information. Additionally, fossils belong to a whole other category, animals and plants from prehistoric times. Consequently, this doesn’t provide information about primitive culture and don’t assist scientists seeking data on primeval civilization. Furthermore, bog bodies are probably the most complex sources of enlightenment because they can provide clothing, weapons, and materials of specific eras, as well as informing us about their actions. For instance, of scientists suspected the person was sacrificed we can conclude that whatever civilization they were from practiced human sacrifice. In all honesty, bog bodies would be a grand loss because they’re far more intriguing than other artifacts. Considering this, bog bodies supply insight about someone’s life and it simulates reading an autobiography because you find out multitudes of information about the person, even if they’re dead. Another bog body they studied was the Yde Girl, she was found in 1987 in the Netherlands but she had died 2,000 years earlier. While they were studying her remains, they found at she had scoliosis, which impairs how you walk because it’s a mild spinal curvature. The toes of her right foot also signified that she might’ve been slightly pigeon toed. Scientists also noticed that she was stabbed and strangled with her on belt, which was left on her neck after death. Perhaps she was considered undesirable in her society because of her “flaws” and killed because of this. However, there are several other ways she could’ve died, it could’ve been a sacrificial
One of his most prestigious and understandable mistakes was on a decapitated, headless body. Doctor Bass found a recently uncovered body in a shallow grave outside of an old antebellum home. After much debate and much study and looking and thinking of possible outcomes for many hours, Doctor Bass and local law enforcements solved the very elusive mystery. The news and the answers of the mystery case baffled and shocked everyone. It seems that the headless body was originally buried in the grave around two hundred years previous, during the time of the Civil War!
While the thought of a giant farm full of decaying bodies may seem gruesome and terrifying, everyday it helps us learn new things about forensics. Firstly, The Body Farm was made known to the public when famous crime novelist Patricia Cornwell published a book with the same name about the farm (“Dead” 2). This book gave The Body Farm the recognition in more of a public eye. Patricia even states in the foreword of The Body Farm of how she came to learn about the farm and Dr. Bass, and how it changed her life. The Body Farm is an outdoor classroom designed to teach forensic anthropology students, and professionals in the legal and medical field, how the body decays and how the world plays a role in it (Drinnen 1). This farm not only benefits one type of science, but many all combined together, which is what forensics is made of. Police also use this to test and find how a body died in order to solve a case. The background behind the Body Farm is vast and important to our knowledge of the human body, whether we realize it or
There were many factors that lead t the discovery of the skeleton owner’s gender, ethnicity, height, and age.
After reading Stiff, it was surprising to discover that there are so many different ways that cadavers can be used. For example, cadavers are used to see the different stages of decomposition, as test dummies, as compost, and as art. Until I read this book, I thought that you were simply buried or cremated when you die. Further, I
3. What evidence do the scientists use to try to discover where the men were buried?
Death by Theory, written by Adrian Praetzellis, is an engaging and informational book written in a novelistic way that engages the reader to think critically about archaeology. Compared to other forms of informational text about archaeology, Death by Theory teaches archaeological theory by telling a story that incorporates the different theories of archaeology in a realistic setting. While standard textbooks about the theory of archaeology can come off a bit dry, Death by Theory skips the standard definitions and applies this in a way that aids the reader in understanding how these theories and terms can be applied in an actual archaeological setting. This text illustrates the adventure of plucky archaeologist Dr. Hannah Green and her nephew Sean Doyle as they seek to explain an unusual archaeological site while dealing with real life archaeological struggles. The protagonists deal with an egotistical colleague of Dr. Green who sought her out as a consult on a particularly strange archaeological case. All the while dealing with cults, the media, and incompatible data.
The distribution of skeletal remains tell the scientists how long the bones or individual has been there. The most challenging part for me would have to be finding the little pieces of the puzzle, the missing link or where the body originally was.
Bog Bodies allow us to delve into the ancient lifestyles that the individuals led, this includes their diet, their looks, their clothing, their beliefs and their customs. Tollund Man revealed all this information and more when scientists began to reconstruct his life. Tollund Man was found with a leather belt and a
The body of the man was found largely unclothed and no items or objects were found alongside him. Though upon further inspection scientists when performing an autopsy found that the man stomach and intestines had been extremely well preserved. When analysing the stomach content they were able to decipher the man’s last meal and what his average diet consisted of. Scientists and archaeologists were able to conclude that the man’s last meal was most likely a form of porridge that was accompanied by over 50 different herbs, spices and grasses. Also among analysing the body it was noted that the man fingerprints were still able to be taken suggesting that he did not take part in any hard physical
Forensic anthropologist examine skeletal remains for elements of a skeleton that can give clues to the person it belongs to. The Kennewick man’s skeleton was found in surprisingly good condition meaning the damage to the skeleton was done in his life, not due to deterioration. The skeleton showed a projectile point lodged in his hip, five broken ribs that did not properly heal, two small dents in his skull, and a bum shoulder. These wounds show an insight to the lifestyle
The book, Death’s Acre: Inside the Legendary Forensic Lab the Body Farm Where the Dead Do Tell Tales written by Dr. Bill Bass and Jon Jefferson, tells of the life of Bill Bass and his forensic cases and adventures as a forensic anthropologist. He studies bones and human corpses to aid the law enforcement in identifying bones from unknown bodies or people. Dr. Bill Bass has also developed and built his own forensic lab, which he named “The Body Farm”. The Body Farm allows his him study the decomposition of dead bodies to better determine information that can be used to help solve crimes. Dr. Bill Bass has lived many places in his life. He lived in Kansas and taught there during the sixties. He also lived in South Dakota where he excavated Indian
You are probably thinking Death 's Acre is a strange name for a book. And that a skull is a weird covering as well. So if you have not read the summary on the back of the book already you probably don 't know anything about the book and you are confused right now. So Death 's Acre is not only about the body farm in the hills of Tennessee for which forensics students study, but also about Dr. Bill Bass and his strange accounts in the forensic world with murders and anthropology. This book will take you places you have never been and as a reader I really suggest you read it.
The motive of the modern researches are that they think the skeletal remains should have been kept because they should stay safe. For decades the skeletal remains of humans from unmarked graves have been dug up for archaeological excavations. These remains have been collected by museums, universities, and government agencies. The majority of those remains being descendents of Native Americans. These museums, universities, government agencies, and physical anthropologists would pay for stolen remains and display them as a trophy of their studies, while the Native Americans motive was to get the remains back for tradition. They wanted their ancestors skeletal remains back so they could have a proper reburial. Their motives were related to their culture and religion, not just for their own greed like the
But how do you tell what the bodies are getting to? I’ll tell you! There are forensic scientists that study bodies and then try to figure out how, when, where, and why whoever had this body, died! And how do these scientists do it, you ask? I don’t know! But what I do know, is that the scientists look at the height and weight of the skeletons, and then determine what age they were, so that they can then identify who the person was, and what they looked like. By doing this these special scientists
