STRUCTURE
1. Point of View – Death; Third person omniscient and when speaking about his life-first person.
2. Relationship to meaning: Death being a narrator shows everyone perspective on thing other then it being to say Liesel where she would only show what she feels and sees. Death shows what’s going on in the war and how many people are dying and the outside world from Munich and what goes on at the time.
3. Plot Structure
a. Exposition – Liesel is a 10-year-old girl that is put for adoption and she is taken to Mulching, Germany with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, she feels very out of place with them but adapts quickly. Her foster parents aren’t big supporters of Hitler and Hans isn’t a part of the Nazi Party because of his past with Jews. Liesel plays soccer with the kids that live on Himmel Street and Hans teaches her how to read.
b. Inciting Incident – Liesel’s little brother died on the way to Molching when Liesel’s mother put them for adoption when she couldn’t take care of them anymore. Liesel finds her first book The Grave Digger’s Handbook at her brothers’ funeral.
c. Events contributing to rising action – Liesel starts loving her foster parents more and Max Vandenburg, a Jew, came to 33 Himmel Street and stayed in the Hubermann’s basement for almost 2 years and wrote his own books from Mien Kampf that he would give
It depicts death as a man who has the ability to make conscious decisions, as a human would. Death is not a person, but giving it human qualities creates an air of mystery and curiosity as to why death would simply walk away or why it would stay and take a life. There is no rhyme nor reason for why death comes at a specific time or to claim a specific person.
Events contributing to rising action- Max Vanderburg is introduced into the story. He goes into the Hubermann house because he wants to hide from the Nazis. The Hubermanns make a good effort to hide Max in their basement. Max and Liesel end up becoming best friends because they relate so much to each other. Liesel also starts to steal books which becomes her new hobby. Max eventually leaves because he feels like the Hubermanns have done enough for him.
The narrator is death as it says in the book “Your soul will be in my arms”
When readers first meet Liesel Meminger, she is a young girl standing quietly with her mother and brother on the train. At this time, she seems confused and a little bit afraid. She doesn’t know exactly
Commentary: Death is an omniscient narrator. He switches between many of the characters in the book. He describes many of the characters feelings, emotions, and thoughts throughout the story.
In the beginning of the novel, Liesel brother dies while they were on the train to Munich to the foster home .This drains Liesel cause she is going to the foster home
“…‘don’t you know I love you…’” (534). After saying this, she realized the best way to show him how she felt one last time was to kiss him. “Liesel kissed her best friend, Rudy Steiner, soft and true on his lips” (536). Next she saw her mama and papa. She went up to her mama first and went back to the first time they met, and then special times with her. “‘Do you remember what you said to everyone on the street that day?’ Her voice wavered now. ‘You said, ‘what are you a*sholes looking at?’’” Liesel went back to how even when Rosa was being rude, like her usual self, she also always made Liesel feel safe. Then she went back to another time she was rude, but made Liesel feel better and safer. “‘Mama, i know that you… I liked when you came to school and told me Max had woken up’” (537). Then, finally she moved on to Hans, the person she loved the most. Liesel thought of papa as her home. Whenever they were together, they were home. One of the things she loved most was his accordion. To say goodbye, it
1. I think that Death’s chatty tones added to the serious themes. Death had a witty and honest tone and though some parts seemed humorous, there always seemed to be several darker layers to the humor. There were many moments in the novel where his narrations would be quite chilling. An example of such a moment can be found on page 349, Death says, “Summer came. For the book thief, everything was going nicely. For me, the sky was the color of Jews.” This is a striking and scary comment because it reminds us that countless Jews are dying and Liesel is just living her everyday life without giving much thought to it.
Max's father, Erik Vandenburg, saved Hans's life during World War I by giving up his own life in the process. Now, Max is 22, hiding from the Nazis, and Hans is his last hope for survival. During World War II, hiding a Jewish person in your home was one of the most bravest and terrifying things a German person could do. The last picture I drew was of the bombings that killed everyone Liesel knew while they were all asleep. They bombed Himmel Street and it was completely destroyed. The only survivor was Liesel, she was in the basement writing in her book on her memoir, The Book
What better way to start than to introduce the man who held the great power and control of the words in The Book Thief? Without further ado, the man behind The Book Thief, Markus Zusak; Markus Zusak was born on June 23, 1975 at Sydney, Australia. He was born to a German mother and an Austrian father, who like Hans Hubermann was a painter. Upon arriving to Sydney, both of his parents could not read and write in English, so they encouraged all of their children to master in the language. His mother and father also had experience with World War II in their own countries. Thus, it can be concluded that the stories his parents told him, like one story about the bombing of Munich and about Jews being marched through his mother's town on their path
He heard a quote that he thought of that made him think about personifying Death to be the narrator. “Here’s a book set during the war. Everyone says war and death are best friends” (“In His Own Words. A Conversation With Markus Zusak”).
If I had to chose a book to commit to memory, similar to the “Book People,” in Fahrenheit 451, I would choose to memorize The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. The Book Thief is a novel that mainly focuses on the life of a Liesel Meminger, a girl fostered by a German family during Nazi Germany. Her foster family soon hides a Jew named Max Vandenburg, that leads to conflict in the story due to the occurring Holocaust. However, the novel is told from a unique and proprietary perspective--the perspective of Death. Throughout the novel, Death foreshadows the coming death of the characters in the book. I believe that The Book Thief is a prime candidate for memorization because of its important historical events, despite its fictitious characters. Regardless
The relationship to the meaning is that Death is attracted to death and he describes that each time he spots liesel being that she was around death a lot so he know what is go around her. Also at this point in History there was a lot of death because this was a time of Genocide. Meaning, setting Death as the narrator allowed the reader to know everything that was go along with the character as well as the setting of this novel.
Death is the main character, as well as the narrator of this story, yet the author provides us with no real description of her other than calling her a woman. Death narrates this tale in a way that leads us to believe that she is almost an omniscient being in the way that she is able to describe the dialogue between the servant and his master, but an omniscient narrator is incapable of being surprised himself or herself and we find this not to be the case in this story. I believe the author intended to do this in order to make Death appear mysterious, yet also familiar to the reader. Once Death is given human elements, like the ability to be surprised, it gives the illusion that one can cheat death.
The author forwardly proceeds to the introduction of Death, as a personified character. According to Britannica Academic, “Personification is a figure of speech, in which human characteristics are attributed to an abstract quality, animal, or inanimate object.” God will be personified through the character of death as a messenger. His main role is to question the readiness of death in the hero character, Everyman, of whom, exemplifies the absence of a spiritual relationship: causing no fear of physical death. Everyman who is busy living his life and following his own path is suddenly faced with the reality his time of death is near. Through his personified character, death, will work as God’s agent to help Everyman confront dying and his awareness of eternal life.
