Many books are banned for various reasons and because it is Banned Book week, let's dig deep into one in particular, The Giver. Some of the main reasons it has been banned is because of its violence and sexual content, but according to a slate.com chart, the top reason why this book has been banned is because it is unsuited to the age group it is categorized under. The age group the book falls under ranges from 9-15. Some say this is not suited for kids because of the explicit content. Others say that yes, it may be very descriptive, it still offers great insight on what a life without choices or freedom would look like. If you ban all controversial books, it draws more attention to the books and why people aren’t allowed to read them. Not all books are intended for everyone, but we should have the freedom to choose for ourselves what to read. Lois Lowery once said, “The Giver passed along with the boy knowledge, history, memories, color, pain, laughter, love, and truth. Every time you place a book in the hands of a child, you do the same thing. It is very risky. But, each time a child opens a book, he pushes open the gate that separates him from Elsewhere. It gives him choices. It gives him freedom. Those are magnificent, wonderfully unsafe things.” The option should be out there for all to choose whether or not they read a book. This book can offer many important life lessons about maturing and nonconformity. The reader can learn about growing up by looking at Jonas’s character development. At first he was scared to accept the new responsibilities of being the receiver of memory, but he slowly gets used to it and eventually risks his life to save the
