MTV has linked its image to Famous artists, Music, and Young Generations, managing to establish a trait among them: Famous persons ‘young revolutionary’ claim “I want my MTV”, helping young and unknown singers to become celebrities, and allowing young audience to peek into music star’s day to day life thanks to the many related programs has what developed throughout this two decades along with the reality shows. The fact that so many singer’s career owe their success to MTV shows the importance of their brand. All this massive campaign helped MTV to build a strong brand image among the young generation who over the years associated “young spirit, cutting-edge and free thinking” to its Brand.
Over the years MTV transformed from a music channel to that having a cultural significance. It started to show case long form of programming which helped MTV to address changing viewer taste and also emerged as a source of information and education for its viewer on important world events and issues. Their core values should be leading-edge coverage of new musicians and their music along with their association with youth and youth culture. They have a powerful youth oriented brand image and are spread all over the world. Youth is what defines MTV and it should strive to associate itself with youth culture and change according to what the youth culture demands.
Jo Malone is an international brand which was established in United Kingdom by Jo Malone in 1994, then it was acquired by Estée Lauder in 1999(Jo Malone 2014). This brand has a series of products, such as scents, body care products and home supplies (ibid). Its products are extracted from natural materials with pure flavor; so it is always pursued by many stars and upper class (Jo Malone 2013). Jo Malone allows consumers to tailor their own
Many teens in every generation seek to separate themselves from their parents. One way of creating that separation is by embracing different music. For the first time, teens had large amounts of disposable income that could be spent on entertainment designed specifically for them. Also, the new mass media meant that teens across the country could hear the same music broadcast or watch the same television shows. This brought a rise of an independent youth culture that was separate from adult culture. The new youth culture became an independent market for the entertainment and advertising
MTV galloped through the '80s as a factor of musical taste, style and fashion. During the early '80s, the network helped introduce an entire stable of new music stars.
Iconic legends like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bon Jovi, Prince, Def Leppard, and Guns N' Roses built MTV. Music fanatics like myself used to run home from school, just so we could witness a Michael Jackson music video. MTV is the reason I listen to all genres of music including Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop, and R&B. BET was so instrumental in making sure R&B artists were recognized and respected. If it wasn't for BET, legendary musicians like Patti LaBelle, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, and New Edition may have gone unnoticed by the world. MTV and BET were important factors in the music business- I just wish the networks understood how essential they are in this battle to get music back to its dominance. Music deserves to be played/viewed on the major MTV and BET channels- not the affiliate MTV and BET channels that most people don't have access to. Television is a vital platform, and artists need that platform in order to help promote their
“MTV has a long history of reflecting the lives of our viewers with compelling reality stories," says Tony DiSanto, MTV's president of programming. The program’s featured girls come from rural Mid-Western or Southern states, usually from small, working-class towns, in attempt to appeal to teenage girls of the same background. The implicit message at the
MTV, formally known as Music Television, is one of the most viewed networks on television today. Roughly thirty-three years old, it has changed the American culture drastically in more than just one way. Specifically targeting teens and young adults, the MTV network provides all of the most up to date gossip on celebrities, highlights the latest fashion trends, promotes versified lifestyles, and defines the music industry of our generation. However, this so-called “idolized network” has not always been this way. The American culture has been affected by MTV through the creation of the network, the transformation from simply just music television to inappropriate reality shows, and the promotion of inappropriate content.
In today’s society, is the media mirroring our behavior, or are we mirroring the media’s portrayal of us? That question was posed in the documentary “The Merchants of Cool”, narrated by Douglas Rushkoff. This program examined the teenage culture and how the media is used to manipulate and portray our generation. With examples from Sprite, MTV, WB, and other massive media outlets, evidence is shown that our media-teenager relationship is tainted with sex, music, rebellion and a broad image of what it is to be “cool”. Most of the images portrayed of teenagers aren’t the best. With TV shows such as “MTV Spring Cruise”, teenagers are shown as sex-driven, reckless kids. TV corruption is just one of many examples of the blurred line between reality and perception in media and advertising.
As America headed into the 1980s, two decades of social and political upheaval have left the nation rattled and the economy weakened. The Iran hostage crisis shook America's confidence and many looked for a new kind of leader to steer the country into the new decade. Ronald Reagan led America into a new era of prosperity leaving the soul-searching of the 60s and 70s behind. The nation was ready to enjoy itself and with plenty of new toys to play like VCRs and video games, Americans spent more time at home and soon something called cable TV would make it even harder to leave the living room. With the new innovation of the TV, one of the ideas for a channel was a marriage between music and television. This new idea for a channel devoted to something called music videos would end up revolutionizing and often scandalizing an industry that had no choice but to embrace the fact that music in the 1980s had to have a face with videos. By having these music videos, they would change the way we look at music and the way we look at the world. This cutting- edge idea was a new medium perfectly suited to a new generation and that idea was called, MTV. This leads to the question: How did MTV influence pop culture of the 1980’s? This topic is worthy of investigation because the coming of MTV has had a significant impact on the way people see pop culture. Before researching the topic, the writer had limited knowledge on MTV and only knew about the music itself. In the paper, the writer was
The 1980s was the birthplace of a new era, an era of moviegoers and people who loved to watch tv. At the end of the 1980s 60% of the population had cable TV. Movies such as E.T., Back To The Future and The Breakfast Club all debuted in the 1980s. One major contribution to TV being so popular was MTV because it went against the “norm” and showed all kinds of music. MTV had a large span of artist that consist of Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Public Enemy, and many more. MTV was a way for people to get their unsaid feeling out without having to face backlash.
Music Television gave a generation a voice. With the awakening of MTV, 1983 was a golden age for music television. The inception of hip-hop music videos caused wardrobe to be an important part of an artists “armor”. Rappers used outfits for promotional purposes. Certain outfits would be worn in pictures, performance, and
MTV was first to establish principles of popular culture. MTV became an iconic presence in popular culture, inspiring visual media culture. Over the years, MTV has played a major role on popular culture on a global scale. MTV has advanced in becoming a leading style of popular culture for younger generations. MTV and its culture has spread world-wide resulting in MTV’s expansion into different channels and countries such as MTV China, MTV Canada, MTV India, etc. however, all the channels belong to one mass media source: MTV.
Basics: not intersted in fashion with being 20% of all viewers and 45% being female.
One of the biggest challenges for MTV was the controversial content that it is used to show on their normal channel and regarding this the main difference they had to adapt. The sexuality, use of alcohol, politic criticism and religion criticism are some of the main characteristics of MTV on other countries that are not as conservative as Arabs. With these characteristics MTV has achieved success through the Western hemisphere, be- cause the black humor they use is normal among the youngsters and instead of feeling sensible with these, they see it in a humorous way. But, in the Arab community they still conserve the traditional values supported by their culture. In an effort to adopt the strategy of “Think Globally, Act Locally” MTVN (Music Television Networks) executives made it a point to learn the cultures and make shows that relate to the cultures as op- pose to exporting the American culture. In order to achieve this goal the channel adopted a decentralized
Popular culture is generally believed to be comprised of a variety of elements. For example, popular culture covers the most contemporary and instant aspects of our lives. These aspects can often show the characteristics of rapid change, especially in today’s highly technological and informative world in which, people are highly influenced by the universal media. Certain standards of behaviour and common beliefs are reflected in pop culture. Because of its cohesion, pop culture both influences and reflects people’s daily life. Moreover, brands can reach iconic pop status. However, these aspects are not constant and may change rapidly. (Abbott and Sapsford, 1987).
