Cancer lies resting in all of us; all the living organisms such as our bodies are consistently making defective cells1. This is how tumors are developed. Our bodies are provided with a number of mechanisms that can detect and keep such cells in check1. Breast Cancer (BC), is the most common malignancy found in women worldwide, and it is associated with high morbidity and mortality2. These breast tumors are made up of different characteristics of breast cancer cells3. However, toxicity and chemoresistance are the main reasons that limit the treatments in BC cases to become successful4. Major treatment strategies for breast cancer consist of either radiotherapy, surgery and/or chemotherapy2. The chances of surviving when patients receive …show more content…
Further data demonstrated that frankincense oil can induce apoptosis in breast cancer3. Whether or not frankincense oil influences apoptosis in breast cancer remains unclear. This study will utilize breast cancer cells to determine if frankincense oil influences the viability of the cells and cytotoxicity.
Hypothesis:
Since scientists have been unable to find a cure for breast cancer, research is needed to lower the viability of breast cancer cells. Due to frankincense’s anti-inflammatory ability to reduce cancer, we hypothesize that frankincense oil will inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells and promote apoptosis.
Methodology:
Breast cancer cells (MCF-7) will be kept at 37° C and 5% CO2 in an incubator. The breast cancer cells are going to be treated by having a control group with media only while the experimental groups will be treated with different concentrations of frankincense (5%, 10%, 20%, and 25%).
Breast cancer cells will be incubated for 24 hours. They will be treated with 30 µM concentration of frankincense and the cells will have a control group of 0 µM; breast cancer cells will be observed for different time periods (0, 3, 6, and 12 hours).
Aim #1: Investigate the effect of Frankincense oil on Breast cancer cell viability
Based on previous studies, Frankincense oil’s anti-inflammatory ability has suggested that it could possibly kill cancer
Today modern science continues to prove the benefits of oils. For example, hospitals throughout Europe are studying the immune boosting properties of frankincense, and Weber State University has found in some studies that oils like Oregano are superior to Penicillin in their ability to kill microorganisms. If you are looking for a safe, effective, and all-natural approach to better health, check out essential
It is estimated that 40,030 deaths from breast cancer (39,620 women, 410 men) are will occur in 2013. Breast cancer is second only to lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Breast cancer death rates have been decreasing steadily since 1989, rates decreased by 3.0% per year in women younger than 50 and by 2.0% per year in women 50 and older between 2005 and 2009. This decline is attributed to prevention, early detection, improved healthcare services and reduced use of MHT.
The extracts and polyphenols suppressed cell proliferation, promoted apoptosis, modulated signaling transduction, inhibited cell invasion, and prevented angiogenesis and metastasis in animal models related to multiple types of cancer such as liver, bladder, prostate, intestine, colon, pancreas, and mammary gland in more than one hundred publications (Yang & Wang, 2010; de Moura et al., 2013). Green tea has been studied expansively for its cancer prevention effects which are believed to be associated with green tea polyphenols known as "catechins (-)-epigallocatchin-3gallate (EGCG), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), (-)-epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG), and (-)-epigallocatechin (EC)...they each have a level of antioxidants and are strong metal ion chelators, which prevent the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS)" (Yang & Wang, 2010, p. 931; Ziech et al., 2012). Further research has revealed that high concentration levels are necessary to accomplish this, and adding other agents such as Atrovastatin, a drug used to lower cholesterol, increase success (Yang & Wang, 2010). EGCG has demonstrated the most success because it "serves an antioxidant, or pro-oxidant, and
As medicine is growing in our times, researcher are looking for a new medicine to fight female breast cancer. Many people talk about the topic of breast cancer, but do they truly know what it is? In which case, I would be happy to inform you about breast cancer. Breast cancer is a disease in which tissue cells from the breast starts growing in an abnormal and uncontrollable way. These cells usually form a malignant tumor inside the breast and it is often felt as a lump or seen in an mammogram. There are different types of cancer such as: ductal carcinoma, lobular carcinoma, and inflammatory breast cancer. Researchers are looking for new ways that might lower the risk of obtaining breast cancer especially in cases where it is hereditary.
The antioxidant and tumor inhibiting property of Brahmi were studied in 3- methylcholanthrene induced fibrosarcoma rats (Rohini et al., 2004). The levels of the antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione, the rate of lipid peroxidation (LPO) were determined in the liver and kidney tissues. Sarcoma induction in rats resulted in a marked increase in the rate of LPO and a decrease in the antioxidant enzyme status. Furthermore, tumor markers such as lactate dehydrogenase, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, creatine kinase, and sialic acid showed an upregulated expression in the serum. Brahmi supplementation enhanced the antioxidant enzyme status, reduced the rate of lipid peroxidation and downregulated tumor development markers. Among the five crude samples such as the whole plant of Bacopa monniera (L.)Wettst and four different fractions (petroleum ether, CHCl3, EtOAc, and n-BuOH fractions) of the methanol extract, n-BuOH fraction was noted to have the highest antitumor activity as per bioassay-guided methods conducted by Peng et al. The dammarane triterpene saponins isolated from n-BuOH fraction, bacopaside É (1) and bacopaside VII (3), had
Aromatherapy uses oils from plants to enhance both the physical and psychological well being of an individual. They have been described as “the volatile, organic constituents of fragrant plant matter and contribute to both flavor and fragrance and are extracted either by distillation or by cold pressing” (Tisserand and Balacs, 1995). Today, the use of aromatherapy and other alternative medicines have gained momentum in helping heal and treat several diseases, in particular in cancer care. Claimed benefits of aromatherapy for cancer patients include reduced anxiety levels and relief of pain, muscular tension, fatigue, and emotional stress all of which may also be effects of chemotherapy.
Although more research should be done on this subject, there is critical exploration on the impacts of lavender, in mix with other essential oils, as an approach to prevent breast malignancy in mice. This could be a sign of an expanded possibility of lavender fighting other cancer-causing effects.
Herbs have been used for thousands of years to treat a large variety of health problems some of which include but are not limited to, allergies, high blood pressure, skin problems and even cancer. However, with today's modern medicine, some are left wondering, do herbs that cure cancer really exist?
According to the American Cancer Society, Each year, more than 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer; furthermore Twelve percent of all women will contract the disease, and 3.5% of them will die from breast cancer (American Cancer Society, 2005). There are risk factors that may lead to breast cancer. There are 4 stages of breast cancer and several treatments, although treatments vary from types and stages of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women who are 40 to 55 years old (Breast Cancer, 2009).Cancer occurs when cells divide uncontrollably. It changes from a normal cell to cancerous cells that require gene alterations. Therefore the altered genes and the uncontrolled growth may lead to tumors.
Frankincense is mostly stem distilled but sometimes is used in the CO2 distillation process. “The tree is pierced and then the sap or tears are released from the tree.” Frankincense resin is extracted then distilled. The Essential oil has been used during prayer and meditation. Has been widely used in skin care regimes. Very helpful in respiratory issues, since it helps soothe coughs, ease congestion, and deepen
Around 1600BC, the first breast cancer description was reported in Egypt on the papyrus of Edwin Smith. Breast cancer is the most prevalent diagnosed malignancy amongst women and is the second principle source of cancer-associated mortality. In accordance with 2002 estimation, there have been 1,151,298 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed, 410,712 deaths ensued by breast cancer, as well as over 4.4million breast cancer alive case worldwide. Interestingly, breast cancer was more predominant in the western developed countries compared to Asia and some parts of
Cancer is the second leading cause of death, and millions of people die each year due to various types of cancer despite continuous efforts to find ways to control and cure the dreaded disease (9). Even though cancer is so common, the molecular mechanisms that lead to its development and progression are still not completely understood (10). The alteration of genetic and epigenetic pathways are currently considered to be the cause of cancer (10). Current forms of treatment for cancer have limited potential due to their toxicity and high expense as well as their side effects of altering the function of cell signaling pathways (10). As a naturally occurring compound, the effectiveness of Nigella sativa to be utilized as an anti-cancer agent has been increasingly explored
Cocoa powder exerted anti cancer properties in in vivo studies. Amin et al. 2004.,indicated that cocoa liquor extract lower the activity of tumor marker enzymes during
The methanol soluble portion of black cumin oil, which is prepared by compression of seeds of Nigella sativa, showed inhibitory effects on arachidonic acid (AA)-induced platelet aggregation and blood coagulation (Enomoto et al 2001). NS oil (NSO) was studied to evaluate its effect on the fibrinolytic potential of the fibosarcoma cell line HT1080 to elucidate whether this oil might have an antitumor activity through its modulation of the fibrinolytic potential of such cells. The results showed that blackseed oil decreases the fibrinolytic potential of the human fibrosarcoma cell line (HT1080) in vitro; implying that inhibition of local tumor invasion and metastasis may be one such mechanism (Awad 2005).
