People have different learning style. According to the VAK Learning Style Indicators, my learning style is quite not clear which is tend to be physical but very close to visual and auditory. Because of in university or college even high school in some cases is very stressful. Student live in a very intensive environment, so it is very significant to let the student know what their learning style is. Let them concentrate on using the learning style that they good at. So, I am going to introduce my current learning style, the tasks I find which is the most easiest or difficult and the strategies I think it would be useful in university due to my learning style.
Another key feature of high quality teaching is the teachers ability to adapt to the different style of learners which they have in their class. Koshy, Ernest & Casey (2000) carried out an interesting piece of research which investigated the retention of learning when different teaching strategies were used. Due to these learning strategies that I have employed previously, I will be more likely to incorporate these learning strategies in my teaching as these were previously successful for me. However, although these strategies were successful for me, it may not be successful for other students and therefore it could be a hindrance to my development as an effective teacher as I will need to overcome the hurdle to identify the different learning strategy and style of different students and develop my teaching style to suit the needs of the students rather than incorporating my previous learning strategies into my teaching blindly. Learning styles play a vital role in students’ learning process. When the educational practices exhibit major gaps between teaching and learning, the learning process itself collapses. What may be happening, then, is a basic “disagreement” between the preferred strategies of teachers and those of students. Teachers must make full efforts to redefine their own teaching methods, keep on providing feedback to the students of various learning approaches, for example, how to work on vocabulary, how to improve reading ability, etc.
Learning styles from a learners view are useful as they understand, how best they receive the information. It enables them to learn effectively in whatever learning situation one encounters (smith 1982b).
Learning style is cognitive, emotional and the physiological factors can clearly define how a learner manages within a structured learning environment. Additionally, the different learning styles can provide a basic understanding for trainers on how learners prefer to learn. Nonetheless, learning styles should not be used to divide people into learning sub groups. Individuals can learn in any learning style, however may prefer one style over another.
A teacher should keep the learners’ need at the forefront when developing a teaching program more often a teacher tend to use a limited range of strategies that sit naturally with them regardless of students who prefer other ways to learning explained Brady(2006, p. 11). All too often it’s easy for a teacher to just follow the same lesson every semester applying the same strategy for every learner. We all learn differently and what works for one does not necessary work for the other, teachers need to not just be aware of the different learning styles but also need to develop the skills to observe and pick up on what learning style a student is, the correct type of resources to be developed and the approach required to take the student on a learning journey. This will allow the implementation of a learner centred teacher program.
The information gathered and interpreted in this study will be beneficial to the students with regards to their awareness of their different learning style.
I am a clinical teaching fellow and a medical school examiner. My role involves giving tutorials and lectures to third, fourth and fifth year medical students that are posted to our hospital. Some of the tutorials are at the bedside and could be during or after ward rounds. Because of these teaching activities, I have frequent interactions with them. When the third year students started their rotation, I was asked by the medical school to conduct formative clinical assessments for these medical students. The aim of the assessment was to determine what learning deficiencies the student has, where they need to focus on and what support they will need from the academic fellows.
As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Throughout the years many have studied how people learn. Knowing this, there are different types of learning. There are three types of learning styles, Visual, Aural and Kinesthetic according to The Twin Cycle Experimental Learning Model: Reconceptulizing Kolb’s Theory. (Avery, Gayle and Bergstiener, Herald. 2014). The observations done in the articles have proved the theory of multiple learning styles is to be true. Learning styles of students is very prominent and obviously an issue when combined with a large class size. Different learning styles have always impacted our lives although it may be more relevant due to test scores and lecture studies. Whereas in the article Teaching Very Large Classes, professors give their own opinions on the struggle of attending to the needs of very large class sizes. People don’t use the different learning styles, Visual, Kinesthetic and Auditory, to their advantage.
Since the beginning of modern education, education and technology have been intertwined. Given that, it has only been recent that researchers have really made sense of how one learns. The idea of learning styles has been popularized in recent years in pop science, and psychology, assuming that each person has a unique novel learning method; but, given this information how can technology improve this ideal?
