British Imperialism In Egypt Essay

Egypt has one of the longest histories of any nation in the world. Written history of Egypt dates back to about 5,000 years, the commencement of civilization. While there is divergence in relation to Early Egyptian times, it is said that Egypt came to be around 3200 B.C., during the reign of a king by the name of Menes and unified the northern and southern cities of Egypt into one government. In 1675 B.C., Egypt was invaded by the Hyksos, people from the east, bringing along the very first of chariots and horses ever to come across Egyptian soil. Approximately 175 years later in 1500 B.C., the Egyptians had gotten rid of the Hyksos and driven them out. In 1375 B.C., Amenhotep IV had become the king of Egypt.

There is a place where not far from my hometown, which, since my childhood, still holds the secrets to life. It was a place where we were free. Free to do whatever we wanted to do, say whatever we wanted to say, it was our place, our river. It was a simple place, no paved or asphalt roads for the commotion of busy traffic, no tall buildings to block out the sunlight, no sense of time to feel rushed or anxious, no effects from the outside world. Imperialism is defined as one country’s domination of the political, economic, and social life of another country. In Africa in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, imperialism was present and growing. The main countries involved in the imperialism in Africa were the French, German, and Great Britain. The French’s empire was mainly in North and West Africa while Britain’s colonies were scattered throughout the continent. Germany ruled over such countries as Tanganyika, Togoland, and Cameroon, until their defeat in World War I.

Almost a year ago, Egypt broke into civil unrest when protesters flooded Tahrir Square, demanding the end of Hosnia Mubarak’s regime. Although Mubarak stepped down within two weeks, Egypt is worse off today than it was last January. The Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF), which played a vital role in the January revolution, has now become a violent and oppressive force. The British originally came in as a decent sized company in East India, but when the sepoys attacked that company, England sent their whole army and navy to get the sepoys under control, but while doing that they also took over all of India. Although economically and socially the Indians did benefit in some ways, the British established a massive infrastructure by controlling India and having a huge political, economic, and social impact on India that helped them more than it helped the Indians.

In 1882, Great Britain took over Egypt through military invasions, making it a protectorate in order to have control over the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal connected the British Empire in the west to India in the east, making it significant trade route for Britain to control. During the Cold War, Egypt became an area of great tension, challenging British control over the canal. There was an increase of nationalism, along with the rise of Gamal Abdel Nasser to power. His rise to power lead to the Suez Canal Crisis and Egypt’s independence from Britain in 1956. The Arab Spring began in Tunisia in December, 2010, eventually spreading to Egypt in 2011. British control over parts of Africa during the nineteenth century lead to many crises in the 20th and 21st centuries, including the Suez Canal Crisis and the Arab Spring in Egypt.

Had it not established that kind of dependence on Britain, then it never would have fallen so far into debt. However, this argument fails when the greater context of 19th century Africa is considered. In the the so-called “Scramble for Africa,” 90 percent of the continent was colonized or otherwise taken over by European powers. This included both Egypt and Congo, so whether a country had prior foreign relationships or debts clearly did not matter. The Earl of Cromer, the first British Viceroy of Egypt, explained the real reason why Britain colonized Egypt. He said, “[British leaders] don’t really want the damned place but if we don’t someone will grab it and the whole balance of power will be mucked up.” It is evident, then, that Britain’s rivalry with France, not foreign connections, were the reason why Egypt was colonized. Britain would have taken over either, and those connections really helped afterwards, when Egypt made the effort to gain independence. Egypt spans across the northeast corner of Africa and the southwest corner of Asia. The country is bordered by the Mediterranean sea and the Red Sea as well as Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, and Israel and the Gaza strip to the east. The majority of Egypt's 390,000 square miles of land lies within the Nile Valley of North Africa. Egypt has over 87 million inhabitants, making it the fifteenth most populous country in the world. Across the country, days are typically warm to hot and nights are cool. Egypt experiences a mild winter from November to April and a hot summer from May to October. The country receives very minimal rainfall throughout the year due to it’s desert climate.

Egyptians began to settle along the banks of the Nile River, Starting as far north as to the city of Alexandria all the way down south to Aswan. They developed into a well-structured society as Far East to the Red Sea and west to Dakhia, Oasis among many (Figure 1.). The Nile River reached far lending a hand in creating a well-known civilization that consisted of building pyramids and producing crops for their pharaoh. Evolving from hunters and gatherers into agriculturalists throughout history, Egypt has claimed to be one of the earliest and most spectacular civilizations of ancient times. Before the Europeans began the New Imperialism in Africa, very little was known about the inner parts of the continent. However, after some explorers delved deeper into the heart of Africa, the Europeans soon realized how economically important this area was, and how much they could profit from it. At the time, Britain had only small occupations of land in Africa, but after they realized that they could make money from the rich resources from the inner regions of Africa, they wanted to invade the African countries and take over. The Indian National Congress has already foreseen the Ware Danger and prepared the country to resist the Indian manpower and resources from being utilized for the purpose of British Imperialism. The manpower and resources vested in the First World War has already threatened India and suffered from exploitation. They condemned the transfer of troops from India to the war theaters. The proclamation of the Viceroy of 3rd September 1940 brought India under the war. To this Congress resented that neither them nor the Indian Legislature was consulted, not even they were informed by the Viceroy before declaring such proclamation for the war.

What is a good country? Is a good country a country with a cheerful population? Is a good country a country which controls more land than the next? Is a good country a country whose government and economic system has absolutely no problems? Or is a good country a country that has a delicate balance of benefits and problems. Well, we are here today to discuss the corruption of Egypt, a good country, by Britain, a huge and powerful country. Egypt today can be a viable market for the foreign investor, especially the investor who has the ability to see the rewards of in investing in the region for the long haul. The world and Egypt both realize that the region is the gateway to the Middle East. Egypt is leading the way for Arabic countries to embrace a new way of doing business and opening their borders to the ‘global village’ concept.

There are many civilizations in history that contributed to the rise of modern day society. All of the things that we see today have been in some way shape or form improved upon to stand the test of time. From the structures of buildings, religion and pyramids, to the influence of art, it all played a part. The ancient civilization of the Egyptians was one of the most significant and well known cultures to ever have existed and technology wise, they were light years ahead.
