Donald and Jimmy were completely tired of their bully, Michael. He stood an entire foot taller than both of them and was the master of intimidation. He forced them to do everything for him including chores and homework. He also found it entertaining to punch and throw things at them. Little did he know that this would all end very soon. One warm morning in the summer of 1946, the boys brought the 11-year-old to a nearby pond.
They stood there in horrid as they watched Michael use his knife to carve a living turtle right out of its shell along the shore. Getting bullied in school has a major influence on kids. They view the person bullying them in a negative way. Because many kids today have similar styles, the kid being bullied will include everyone that dresses or acts like the bully as a likely bully. “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” will probably never ring true again. It seems that today skin and bones heal a lot quicker than emotional wounds.
Being bullied for your entire childhood, or all throughout school, will inhibit you from growing up to have a positive outlook on society. Bullied kids can grow up and become rebellious or uncaring. It is one of the worst feelings to be singled out and have somebody ridicule or threaten you. When you are a child, you don't have enough of life's experiences to deal with something like bullying in a rational and sound manner. You decide the only way to end it all is to simply end someone’s life.
Of course we’ve all been bullied or have bullied someone before. Obviously not all people who have been involved in some form of bullying in their childhood have committed murder. In fact, there are people who were involved with bullying their entire lives who don’t end up committing any crimes much less killing someone. In the essay "Who Would Peter be Today?", Ismael Estrada, the writer of the essay, talks about a student named Peter who committed suicide because he was bullied. He killed himself by shooting himself in the head. Estrada never actually bullied Peter but he never stopped it. Estrada also laughed at the taunts and the harsh words made. He reacted as most children do by going along with it. I was bullied as a child and I have friends that were also bullied. From what I've seen, heard and experienced other children are of accepting it, participating and intervening. I think all three of these reactions are common in children.
