People argue that bullying starts in the home, but what if it’s bigger than that? Some cultures are known for their hierarchy of the family model. The man is at the head of the family; he and his sons are of the most importance, and the mother and children are secondary. This type of hierarchy often leads to bullying that begins in the home, and leaks out into the community, sometimes even an entire culture. This leaves many married women, single women, teenage girls, and young girls victims of bullying, and sometimes even physical violence. Many people wonder how this trend of bullying begins. It starts at an early age, with the gender schema theory. This theory states that “children's gender identity motivates the learning and adoption of gender stereotypes. In this theory, the attainment of basic gender identity around ages 2–3 years spurs intergroup cognitions of the sort described by cognitive exaggeration of differences between the sexes, attraction to the in-group, and derogation and homogenization of the out-group” (Tobin et al, 2010). An example of this gender schema theory is the Latino male culture. According to Abreu (2000), Children born into traditional Latino families in which male and female roles are strictly defined are likely to be socialized to assume their respective gender roles. When men are paying attention to their gender identity from such an early age, they begin to recognize the patterns, attitudes, and general disposition of the adult males in their lives. When they see these behaviors from the adult males, they begin to identify with them, see them as the norm, and model themselves accordingly. Thus, from an early age, young boys begin to take on the mentality of female inferiority, and see them as people that they are able to bully and manipulate in order to get what they need. Bullying occurs throughout a human’s life span. The most-critical development stage of one’s personality is adolescence. Bullying during adolescence has been a major issue in every community. Bullying can happen in three known forms; direct, indirect, and cyber. Both gender and sexual orientation are associated with all forms of bullying. Bullying affects self-esteem and family cohesion.
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among people of all ages, but mostly school-age children. Society has been aware of bullying since around 1693, but it was not viewed as a real problem until the 1970s. “While overall incidents of school violence, such as assault and theft, have declined in the last decade, bullying is on the rise.” (qtd in Tyre) The percentage of middle and high school students that have been victimized by bullying went up from 14 percent in 2001 to 32 percent in 2009. Although, gender typing might be considered an external factor, gender schema theory suggests that children are pre-programmed to construct or establish beliefs about the sexes. The child will formulate gender-stereotyped preferences and demeanors from others. One example could be picture day at school and the child formulates that girls wear dresses and boys wear slacks by observing those around them. Another example can be when children are on the playground where girls are more likely to be seen playing house and boys playing war. Since gender schema theory is an information processing approach, it further explains that environmental strains and a child’s cognitions work together to pattern gender-role evolution.

Bullying is a problem that is on the rise in society; however, many individuals have a distorted view of what bullying entails. Usually when someone thinks of bullying, they assume that it is a standard part of a child’s life. This view, on the contrary, is erroneous. Bullying is actually abnormal behavior, many times, leaving victims with a dismantled self identity. Since some people do not understand the consequences of bullying, the actions of the bully often go unnoticed and are perceived as “kids being kids”. The issue of bullying goes deeper than that nevertheless. Despite the erroneous views that many individuals hold towards bullying, it is still a distortion of normal behavior in children.

Many kids all around the world are abused by their parents, peers or even by complete strangers. One of these types of abuse is bullying. At a first glance, we might think that it is an older kid beating/teasing a younger classmate however; bullying consists of much more than this. The basic definition of bullying is when your behavior hurts or harms another person physically or emotionally.
