In the United States of America, there is a system referred to as the criminal justice system. This system assists in managing crime and helps to control society through rules and regulations. If these guidelines are disobeyed, there are consequences that follow. These consequences consist of being arrested by law enforcement, going to court to pay a fine or to be sentenced, and even going to jail or prison (Bohm & Haley, 2014).

In my course of study at Ashford University, which began in February 2016, I have gained knowledge about all three areas of the criminal justice system; law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections. The required resources; course textbook, articles, multimedia sources, and suggested websites provided material that enhanced my understanding of how each component of the justice system operates, their stated goals, and historical background. In addition, the interactive discussion boards offered an opportunity to get different perspectives from my peers who have experience in the field and shared those experiences, as well as, feedback and viewpoints from peers who had limited exposure to the system.
The Criminal Justice System (CJS) is a system of practices across England and Wales. It works alongside major agencies such as; the police, the crown prosecution Service, the National Offender Management Service, the Courts and Prisons who work together to prevent and deter crime by punishing or working with offenders accordingly. There are also voluntary services that run within the CJS which include Victim Support and the national Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NACRO). The criminal justice system has some main goals in which they focus on which include; increasing the public’s confidence in the effectiveness and fairness of the CJS, improving the effectiveness of the CJS when bringing offenders to justice and to improve
We the people of the United States depend on the Criminal Justice system to prevail and never fail its citizens. Criminal Justice System is the ideological institution responsible for the protection, preservation of, and adherence to the civil rights and civil liberties expressed within the Constitution of the United States. The Criminal Justice System is obligated to defend, and uphold the legal rights of citizens in the event of the suspicion of criminal activity, the investigation process, and protocols within arrest and or sentencing. We want the fair and just court system and individuals that work for them to do what right. What happens when the justice system fails to do its parts? Many times it seems that they get away with and very
The United States justice system is a complicated system. The justice system is the third branch of the government. This branch holds the responsibility to create and uphold laws. The justice system has a precise order of how things fall into place when a crime has been committed. The process to arrest an individual to the sentencing of that individual takes a bountiful amount of steps and procedures.
A prison has always been a place to imprison others, often to take criminals away from society. However, people do not know that a lot of these criminals have some mental health issues leading to their own mental destruction; they are ill. People with a mental disability have always been of great importance when talking about the Criminal Justice System. Mental health issues should protect someone from being convicted of a crime.
This course provides students with a deep understanding of the organisations operating within criminal justice systems as well as the administration of criminal justice. Students will examine the central institutions and actors that make up the criminal justice process and ask how the daily practices of these organisations relate to and perhaps even influence the nature and quality of criminal justice. The focus will be on the five main institutions present in almost every criminal justice system: the police, the public prosecutor, the courts, the correctional system and the parole system. The course will explain how these institutions and corresponding actors operate, and will examine the nature of their interrelationships. A broad overview
Being charged with a crime is one thing, but the defense you choose is an entirely different ball game. “In the field of criminal law, there are variations of situations that will tend to contradict elements of a crime, known as a defense”. When someone is charged with a crime the kind of defense that they choose could in the end determine their destiny with the case. The criminal defense a person chooses to use will depend on the crime they are charged with and the evidence they have at their disposal. “Whether a person has a federal criminal attorney, a state criminal attorney, or a public defender, a defense strategy should always be discussed before they enter the court room”. There is a variety of defenses that exist in our criminal justice system. In this essay I will be taking a close look at two different cases that have pleaded two different types of criminal defenses. I will take a look at the nature and types of defenses used in the cases and what evidence was used to help demonstrate that defense. I will also describe how justification and excuse played a role in the cases and lastly I will be describing the outcome of each case.
The criminal justice system serves a couple of purposes, it allows investigating and punishing of anyone that is committing a crime also, it protects the citizens and tries to detour the public from criminal activity. What is a crime? It can be anything from illegal gambling to a very serious matter all together such as murder. Our elected representatives and congress make decisions about acts that can be punished by government. For all this to run smoothly there are a couple of objectives that the criminal justice system follows.
Criminal law is the foundation of our Criminal Justice System. It establishes what actions are deemed illegal. Criminal law applies to areas of law enforcement through three main components: Police, Courts and Corrections. To ensure that everyone is treated equally, constitutional amendments are set in place in to protect the defendant.
Criminology, as defined by the book Criminal Justice: A Brief Introduction, written by the author Dr. Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is “the scientific study of the causes and prevention of crime and the rehabilitation and punishment of offenders” (Schmalleger, 2006, p. 20). Criminology, in itself, has a wide variety of function in treating crime and providing punishment to those who commit the crimes here in the U.S. Since crime increases with the population growth, more policies are being given to law makers, which changes the perspective in how the Criminal Justice system works. Due to the increase in crimes, new laws are made to help reduce the crimes in order to minimize the threat of increasing the crimes that are being committed. The Criminal Justice system offers a wide area of responsibilities that houses different types of functions which helps in the fulfillment of accomplishing the tasks needed for a better, well organized running of the Criminal Justice system.
As it pertains to the last ten years, Criminology and its relevance to the criminal justice system has been taught internationally to a number of students seeking employment within the criminal justice field. Criminology (as a whole) is a comprehensive study of criminal behavior, crime as a social matter, and criminal conduct. This is best explained in Stout’s book titled Applied Criminology when it is stated that “Different criminological theories emerge from different contexts, are shaped by different forces and, therefore, have very different implications if applied” (Stout, 2007, p.2). The most important takeaway from the study of how Applied Criminology is taught (and learned) is that it extends far beyond the mere application of criminological theories and teachings. It concerns itself with the evolution of its own field and sub-fields, as well as the entire ecosystem of related topics. In this way, Criminology takes on a sort of recursive nature in it that it teaches about its own field while being the field itself. Criminology seeks to provide theories that explain why individuals and groups of individuals commit crimes, in an attempt to effectively understand and deal with crime. There are overlapping questions concerning crime prevention, and the implementation of criminological theories focuses on providing explanations to criminal phenomenon. A theory is a set of concepts that are related or linked together by a series of explanations to a phenomenon. These
