During Thanksgiving Break, I visited the St. Louis Art Museum in my hometown. Through many floors of sculptures, painting, and other objects, the one thing that caught my eye was the portrait called Women Seated on Sofa in Interior. This piece was by Fredrick Carl Frieseke an American impressionist painter. He favored quiet, interior scenes of women. Frieseke used the setting of the portrait to explore the interplay of light, color, and pattern. The medium of this canvas is oil and it’s dated back sometime between 1912 and 1914. The exact date is unclear.
The reason I this piece of artwork appealed to me was because of the vivid use of colors. The bright pastels of pinks, yellows, blues and purples caught my eye and drew me in. They created a bright, relaxed, elegant and uplifting feeling to the setting. What I thought was interesting was that at first glance you see a woman, but rather than looking joyful, she seems upset or confused. Due to the colors of the setting I imaged the women’s emotion would match the bright and uplifting colors. I thought the artist’s choice of color was unique because I would typically imagine the colors to be gray and black with the emotion of confusion and sadness. It really causes the viewer to have to examine the image as a whole as well as piece by piece.
At first glance my eyes go directly towards the focal point,

For this reason, I really enjoyed Women Seated on Sofa in Interior. This oil canvas caused me to have to look at each specific detail and as well as the portrait as a whole in order to be able to interpret it. When I toured the St. Louis Art Museum I didn’t realize that they had renovated the building and made room for so many more pieces of art. I would highly recommend going because there are variety new and old of pieces that are very
The different colors, values, shapes, sizes of shapes, and textures create a variety in the painting that doesn’t leave the viewer bored with too much unity or confused with too much variety. I think that there is a perfect mix of unity and variety in this painting, and it draws the eye in and keeps you interested and thinking about the subject matter. There is a repetition of the same blue and green colors as well as the same sweeping shapes that drape across the painting. Your eye seems to follow a path from the white sweep of color on the upper left of the painting down to the middle of the painting along the sweeps of different colors and finally to the bottom. Georgia O’Keeffe’s placement and coloring of these different shapes really draws the eye across the painting. The contrast between the white patches of color and the dark brown and black patches really brings emphasis to these areas of the painting.
At first glance I would describe this artwork as a busy piece of art, but taking a closer look I think the painting gives off a happy, positive and united feeling. The artwork overall is very detailed and there are many hidden messages making it something inspirational. I really like inspiring or any art with a deep meaning behind it. It gives off something even more special when there's a hidden important lesson in the artwork, which this painting has. All in all,
What I really like about her is for example in this two memorials she develops this architectural structures which are so simple but have a great amount of meaning such as the rounded table, while you go around the table you come to understand why equality is so important and the importance of this movement. For example in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, there are two black granite walls, but the significance of it is that she wrote in a chronological order the people who died in this war; you as a watcher you get touched and sad because many innocent people were dying because a political decision that was taken place by a series of events done by the government. I enjoyed watching this video, because I was never interested in architectural sculptures and memorials, and at the end of the video I fond it very interesting. She makes these well-developed sculptures that are incredible to notify the amount of detail they have producing a great focal point and balance in each of her pieces. She makes her artwork very satisfying to watch and being a part of it; because you do not see this dramatic impact or something out of the regular you see something regular an object. An object that inspires you peace you can connect to her pieces of art, because just by touching it or looking at it you understand the message of the piece. I also really love the way she uses natural essences to connect with the person and planet
The painting depicts a young woman in a pink dress sitting down. The background is very dark but three things can be made out by the viewer. Starting with the ground plane of the painting, an orange carpet can be seen covering the entire floor. It is patterned and contains yellows, greens and blues. The cool toned colours are darker in hue than the warm toned. Secondly, there appears to be a cabinet or a desk lining the wall behind her. The wood of the cabinetry is carved with detailed designs and is made of a dark stained wood. Despite the dark background a single red rose can be seen on top of the cabinetry. The rose looks freshly picked and shows no signs of withering in its petals. It is painted in a muted red colour that allows it to stand out on
How does your piece of art communicate, evoke, or inspire? What do you think the artist was trying to say with his or her work?
The artwork is a realistic portrait of a women. It is abstracted with asymmetrical balance with exotic and vibrant colors. As if the women is sitting in the corner with two
As I walked to The Art museum to observe a few of the art work. There were many canvases, but one particular canvas that caught my attention was an oil painting. The oil painted canvas is of a realistic mysterious woman and a phonograph, by the artist named Robert Bean. The woman shown in this painting has short dark brown hair with a long black beautiful one shoulder dress; her skin color is very light that gives that beautiful glow. Her long black dress has a mixture of dark blue and white. She is standing with her arms semi-crossed with one hand holding a small white fan. The small fan has a design of brown flowers. She is standing sideways on the right of the canvas with a piece of light green fabric around her arms; the light green material has a tent of light blue and
I love drawing and painting water colors and, this picture give the impression of it being a water color painting. I like all the different colors the artist used. When I stare at the picture I feel that the women is shy the way she raise her hand to her face, but guys would feel lust for her because of her body and face. I also feel that she is very sneaky and a strong women who would be risky to have a relationship with. When I look at the story description I felt that my thoughts about the women were close. She had weakened the empire by distracting one of the guys from their duties. Even though the woman, Yang Guifei was strangled to death she was a popular subject in literature because she brought drama for centuries. I feel that the picture was expressed in wealth because; the Yang Guifei had to be wealthy or have money to be near the emperor. She had to dress nice to be able to distract the guy’s attention to get close to the emperor. I felt that this piece of art was breathtaking to look at not only was the colors beautiful but how it has a story behind it. I never really stare a piece of art for so long and try to describe it without looking at the story behind it. But when I did read the description I didn’t expect the way I portray this woman to be dangerous. Even though my description of what I thought of her before I look at the detailed description was similar. I still felt that it was amazing how I got so much from just staring at this piece of art. I guess it’s true what they say a picture does speak a thousand
The first thing I look for in a good painting is colors or vibrant. Next, I looked deeper than the color and I saw emotion. This paint made me feel like I was there, it gave me the visual I needed. This painting speaks to me. I really enjoy this painting because it is a message to us, not only African Americans but Caucasians also. When you look at this paint from a non-African point of view. One may see a bunch of angry black men beating up white men. However, if you look deeper into it and you notice the little things, such as the chains in the back, that fact that all the blacks in this painting do not have any type of clothing on, only a human diaper. You can see the passion in these Africans eyes, and the fear in the Whites face. This painting is a wake-up call for to something we all should know. That our textbooks do not mention. This painting is personal to me because any kind of information I can gain on slavery and how the process went down, also how they press came to an end. I am all for it. Slavery is such a touchy subject for me… not because my great grandparents were slaves or anything in that nature. However, because I feel like not enough people in the world are educated on it. I believe that a lot of our textbooks and things we are “taught” by the teacher are “sugar coated” because we do not get the full brutality of what was going on, or for what
Next is the use of color, or lack thereof. The colors in the background are very quiet and muted, mostly subdued blues and grays with hints of a deep red and brownish yellow peeking though. The colors used for the figure are browns and tans, almost as if the was painted with mud, like she is all-natural and from the earth. The range of colors would seem to have a cool tone if you were looking at them on a painter’s palette but the arrangement of color on the canvas gives the piece a warm feeling.
The color scheme of the painting looks as if it’s somewhere along the lines of complementary and analogous. The colors contrast each other, but also compliment them in a very specific way. It is very clear with the splashes of red on the blue down in the bottom left corner. This work has a very open palette, as you can tell by the usage of many colors. The color is very expressionistic. The intentional variation of the color speaks volumes of the mood being portrayed. When standing in front of the painting, the dominating warm colors seem to disregard the sad blues and purples, giving the observer a happy, peaceful feeling. I would imagine looking at the
The art gallery I visited was the El Paso Museum of Arts on April 8, 2017. After observing a number of paintings and sculptures, I decided to write an analysis on a rather simple and calm painting. The composition is by American born Susan Ricker Knox and is entitled Afternoon Tea. The artwork has no specific date but states it was painted in the 1920s. The medium used is simply oil on canvas. The overall compositional subject matter is two women, sitting back-to-back, enjoying their hour with tea. Afternoon Tea by Susan Knox represents a tranquil scene about leisure time that corresponds with the artwork’s line, color, and pose.
From the beginning of time people have created art. While the reasons and methods have changed over the years, people still observe and try to understand even the oldest pieces of work. After being assigned to go to the St. Louis Art Museum, I found five different paintings that all involve some form of oil on either canvas or copper and many different styles.
I had the opportunity to customize the painting to make HER look more like myself. And, I considered it. I thought, I’d have to change HER skin tone to a much lighter shade of brown. I’d have to straighten HER hair and take out the beautiful bounce of HER curls. I would be changing HER entire look. I wasn’t feelin it. The Black woman in the painting was already so beautiful the way she was and I just didn’t feel moved to change HER. Actually, I related to HER in a very intimate way. I already knew it wasn’t the way she looked that I saw in myself. So I couldn’t figure out what it was about HER that I related to. I mean after all, it’s just a painting, I don’t actually know HER, Right?
To see this type of art through the person’s eyes that created it is a beautiful thing. The reason I say this is a beautiful thing is because it is unique and there is no one that could duplicate the same piece of work and have the same meaning that artist wanted it to be.
