Carey Counseling Center has served the mental health needs of west Tennesseans for several decades and the clients are the most affected portion of the paradigm with their mental health needs being legislated and grant written. When the legislators in Tennessee demand the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation cut their budget by percentage points, the contracts of insurance companies come into question. The issue relates to who is most affected with this paradigm shift and the answer is the consumer. If it does not bring in enough revenue, CCC will be forced to close whatever service was crippling the business of CCC and the client is typically the source of change whether they like it or not. Obviously, CCC is in the business
This week I assisted someone with filling out an application for the counseling center. I thought the experience went well. When I assisted the patient with filling out the application I noticed that the application was long and tedious. I think being able to assist patients with completing an application is beneficial for patients who cannot read or understand the questions. I also communicated with a person that was experiencing anxiety. The patient was crying in my office because she was experiencing anxiety about her diabetes. I discussed with the patient some of the challenges that she was experiencing in her life. I felt that I did a good job with assisting the person and calming her down. I also walked the patient up to the counseling center because she was interested in communicating with someone on a long term basis. At the counseling center the patient picked up an application which I thought was a good solution to her problem. I think I am getting more comfortable with communicating with patients on my own.

Response: In today's society, it is apparent that we are facing a mental health crisis. The lack of mental health care has had disastrous effects on this Nation. To address the issue, our society must first concern ourselves with how ordinary people pay for mental health care. The way people pay for mental health services today is not sufficient. Most states have laws in place making it a requirement for insurance companies to provide mental health care. However, because health care providers create limits on how many mental health professionals are on their panel, and thanks to the inordinate amount of people seeking care, health providers purposefully make it difficult to acquire mental health care in order to save money. This intern means that people seeking mental health care often do so at their own monetary expense.

The American Counseling Association (ACA) developed the code of ethics with six principles in mind that they thought were the foundation for ethical behavior and decision making: autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity and veracity (American Counseling Association, 2014). This lead to the six different purposes for the code of ethics. First, it sets ethical obligations and ethical guidance for professional counselors (American Counseling Association, 2014). Second, it recognizes ethical dilemmas that are relevant (American Counseling Association, 2014). Third, it clarifies what is ethically expected and accepted of its members (American Counseling Association, 2014). Fourth, it is an ethical guide for members deciding the best course of action and expectations for conduct, when it comes to those using their counseling services (American Counseling Association, 2014). Fifth, it supports the mission of the American Counseling Association (American Counseling Association, 2014). Finally, it has standards that serve as a baseline for questions and complaints for ACA members (American Counseling Association, 2014). To fulfill the purposes of the code of ethics, the ACA categorizes the ethics into nine different areas (American Counseling Association, 2014).

Carey Counseling Center Inc. in Paris Tennessee in the 70’s to offer much needed mental health services to Henry County and Carey Counseling Center Inc. has 5 offices covering 7 counties with services ranging from outpatient therapy, adolescent services and medication management just to name a few (Carey Counseling Center, 2015). The mental health industry is comprised of various organizations. The bulk of community mental health funding comes from insurance agencies and grant writing. Legislative policy on the federal, state and local level is a driving force that all
Today as soon as I came in I had already knew where to go. My routine is helping serve breakfast then to the first group session at 10 where we talked about mental health in which I showed Joe. He spoke about how medication in the past was mostly about shutting up clients versus really helping them. I really thought that this session was interested because I saw the truth in what he was saying because back in those days they did not engineer medication to help people but more like trying to keep them quiet. Joe also spoke about the psychoanalysis and I was really surprised to see how much the clients really knew about this. One specific client stood out the most because he spoke on the topic, it seem as if he was teaching us versus Joe teaching him. This specific client new so much and it turns out that he went to Lehman College. This was surprising to me because some of us are grown to think that people who are mentally ill come from no educational background and this is what I was expecting to see coming here at Gateway counseling center.
I work for one of the smallest departments at Carey Counseling Center Inc. The housing department consists of a housing director, three independent living case managers, two Project for Aiding in the Transition from Homelessness (PATH) case managers and a peer support specialist. I, Jason Postlethwait, serve as a PATH case manager designed to link the homeless population to mental health and housing services. I serve 4 of CCC’s seven counties and Amanda Nichols, who is the other PATH case manager serves the others. We work in conjunction with our housing director Fran Howe who is in charge of the $400,000 housing grant that pays for those services. The two PATH case managers are funded through a grant from the State of Tennessee and the
Carey Counseling Center’s model for care begins with the patient in which is identified for need with a mental health issue. These individuals are identified through screening efforts of community hospitals, jails, churches, and other community services. The most common form of mental health services comes from Carey’s crisis team, designated for 24 hour on call services rendered to the seven Carey Counseling Center counties in which we operate. Once identified, the next input sector is the trained medical staff. In recent years the identification of nurse practitioners has lightened the responsibility of medical doctors so that services can be rendered but at a much more reasonable rate for insurance providers, while addressing the medical
The transformational box model for Carey Counseling Center would include the input portion including the person suffering from any of many mental health issues. It would encompass the resources Carey uses to identify mental health crisis and the staff Carey utilizes to deal with the initial episode. Finally there is the technological portion Carey utilizes to ensure the most advanced services are being provided. The second step in the T-box assessment includes the processes Carey would utilize to deal with the mental health issue the individual is dealing currently dealing with. The first process would include assessing the individual in a process known as same day access (SDA) which is intended to allow same day access for services.
In the state of Illinois, a counseling student will need education at the Master’s or Doctorate level. Illinois does not require counselors to graduate from programs of a particular accreditation, but the process of getting licensed is easier, if a person chooses to do so. If the student is in a program that is CACREP or CORE-accredited, the student has met the requirements. The students are required to complete 24 semester hours that can be taken either full of part-time (Counselor-License, 2017).
The second step, was to contact a professional at the Crisis Center and inform them about the purpose of our campaign and try to achieve a partnership with this organization. I achieved this task because the Crisis Center agreed to the partnership and their valuable advaocacy resources were published on my groups Facebook page, campaign posters, and bus advertisement. The third step was to contact the Green Bay metro system to implement a bus campaign regarding this issue. Galina did a great job doing this because she worked with the bus company in the past and possessed a valuable knowledge about how to advertise this campaign. I also partnered with Galina to implement the advertisement sign design at Fast Signs. Brianna, Lizze, and Ashely
