This experience was definitely not what I expected it to be; Sterling is a small town and it always seems like there is nothing to do. However, not I see that it is looking to expand and incorporate many modern ideas into the old-fashioned community. In addition, I did not realize how many crucial issues the Council deals with on a daily basis (i.e. the marijuana bill). Although Sterling may be a smaller town, but a lot of government and other proceedings go on actively. Moreover, I expected a much longer meeting both times. The first time I understand there was not much to talk about; however, even for all the things covered in the second meeting, it went relatively fast. Maybe if I had stayed for the work session it would seem longer. Secondly, …show more content…
Without the City Council, Sterling would not have much. They are a great percentage of why Sterling can function the way it does. In addition, they are always searching for more incentives and other projects in increase the standing of Sterling. They are always looking for more positive things to implement in Sterling, and although there may not be much to do, they are trying to make it so there is more (i.e. Pedal the Plains, heritage festivals, etc.). Moreover, they do care for the public and their employees. They ask for public opinion on almost all tough subjects in order to gain more insight into what the people want; they ask for guidance in order to make the decision that would best benefit everyone. This interaction has encouraged me to interact with more government entities in the future. If I could do anything different, it would be to get more involved within my local governments sooner and ask the Council members questions. When I first arrived at the meetings, the City Manager, Don Saling, Is always at the doors greeting and talking with others. If I ever do go to another one of the City Council meetings, I will talk more with him and other members of the Council before and possibly after the meeting. Moreover, I would stay for the work session just to get a little more information on the hard details (i.e. budget numbers, …show more content…
The first is the level of government responsible. We had a discussion over this early in the course and I got the full understanding after attending these meetings. For example, the marijuana-selling bill came up at the first meeting I attended. It is legal in the state of Colorado to sell marijuana; however, if you local county/city/etc. does not permit it, you are not allowed to. This is the case in Sterling, but it may soon change. The second concept I witnessed when attending these meeting was voter, or public, participation. As I stated before, not many people attended the first meeting. Maybe two rows of chair were filled total. If more people were involved with their local governments, more actions could be completed and things could be done quicker. I am going to encourage more people I know to attend these meetings, not only for the publics’ sake but also for their own knowledge and awareness. Finally, I witnessed many tax and other budget issues being handled and contemplated at the meetings. For example, the City Manager Saling talked about the sales tax is still on a steady incline that is likely to continue. He encouraged the public to be aware and watch this so they can adjust their personal budgets. In addition, the budget issue appeared again with the marijuana bill. The Council
6. What types of care and health care support will Keith have to possibly depend upon in the future? What preparations should Keith make? (1 point)
On the morning of May 7th, 2000 the murder of Mary Ann Stephens occurred. She was a tourist to Jacksonville, Florida along with her husband. The two were staying at the Ramada Inn Hotel and had just came from breakfast when they were approached by a young black man who held them at gunpoint, took Mrs. Stephens' purse then proceeded to shoot her between the eyes. When the police first arrived, the elderly woman's body was several inches away from the path on which her and her husband were walking along to get back to their room. Her body was strewn across the grass, covered in blood with the bullet and it's wound being clearly visible to the naked eye. This case became controversial and it is believed that there was racial
As for implementing these changes can cause some problems and issues, moreover this is time consuming process.
On Monday, April 13th, 2009, I visited the Culver City city council meeting, and found that they operate using a council-manager form of government. For a city with a population of about 38,000, this type of governmental structure is fairly common, and I was not surprised to see it in action in a community where the median household income is around $56,000 a year. Culver City is also a culturally rich community with a 60 percent Caucasian population, and a quarter of the residents are either of African American or Asian decent. The mayor, D. Scott Malsin, is one of five members on the council, and his term as mayor is on a rotating basis. Having been to a Hermosa Beach city council meeting with a similar council-manager structure, I knew
Local authorities such as the county and city councils have roles such as education, libraries, public transport, emergency planning which will contribute in more of the latest technology resources which will help the people of illness or of people who need immediate medical attention; this will help services throughout a city or a county. Planning and development to improve on the communities appearance; this will make the people in the society love the place where they live which may lead to less criminal damage. Also fire and public safety and waste management and trading standards. Councils make decisions on the situations within the community; they do this by holding council meetings to discuss what needs to be done to help the society. Members of the public are allowed to attend the meetings so they have first hearing of the decisions discussed than those who don’t attend. All decisions the council make in these meeting must be later published. In my opinion I would say that local authorities are a good thing to have as they can focus on small communities than looking at things as a whole country, otherwise no problems within a community will be solved. I think there should be no improvements for local authorities as they tackle all areas that need improving in the community. Local authorities help the public
The City of Bend, Oregon Government consists of approximately 500 employees across thirteen different divisions. These divisions are Police, Fire, Community Development, Public Works, etc and are all coordinated under the City Manager’s office. Bend’s government style is called a “weak mayor” form of city government, in that the citizens elect a city council, which then elects a mayor from among the council members. The city council and mayor, then hire a City Manager to run the day to day operations of the city. In doing this form of government, the City Manager is not directly accountable to the citizens and can focus on the needs of the city and its employees. At the same time, the City Council can only provide direction to the city manager and is accountable to the citizens. The city employees in this case are led by the city manager as directed by city council. The community leadership environment in this case is established by council to provide direction to the city manager.

Nevada league of cities and municipalities met in Henderson NV January 23, 2015 for the Local government summit. Leaders from local governments from urban to rural communities met together and discussed local issues and priorities. The summits agenda is a brief presentation of bills and local fiscal matters. Leaders coming together like allows for leaders to speak and voice concerns with in their communities. This is a good example of local governments coming together to accomplish a greater good
At what point would these groups cross from being local community groups to simply another level of government? And would that render the goal of the process ineffective? Would this lengthen the feedback
In viewing a case study with Mr. Peter Jones, it was brought to the counselor attention that Mr. Jones referred to her by a co-worker who is concerned about his welfare. Mr. Peter Jones is a 51-year-old heterosexual married African American male with nine children. He is a carpenter who is a non-denominational worshipper. He is also a high school grade graduated. His wife is a homemaker.
Even though both city-states had some similarities and differences in their government, each of them made their voice heard in the assembly in benefit of their people. The right to participate in public
People are important for the success of democracy. After electing their representatives, some individuals wish to be more involved in legislative decisions that affect them, so they take to lobbying and joining interest groups. This often provides them with an atmosphere of individuals who think like they do, while also allowing them to play more of a role than just voting for a few people to represent them. Lobbying and interest groups also allow for issues to be brought to the attention of the legislature and provide a way for these groups to talk to the legislators, whether it is over dinner or at a concert. By voicing their opinions and placing pressures on the legislation, these groups have become successful in fighting for their passions and their views on important
I chose to attend a city council meeting for this assignment and was very surprised at what I witnessed. The city council served an important purpose and the meeting actually accomplished many important goals. Among the interesting things that I saw at the council meeting were the people who attended, the people who presented, the people who sat on the council, and the subjects that were being voted upon in the meeting.
In a parallel system to National Government is Local Government who is responsible. For the management and operation of our cities, towns and local environments. The country is divided up into city and District councils. Representatives of the community are democratically elected to sit on councils and represent the needs and views of citizens. Each council is supported infrastructure of local Government employees who carry out the duties of the council. These duties cover every aspect of the everyday life including running services such as rubbish removal and sewerage, through to Maintaining Facilities such as parks and reserves to town planning and Resource Management Act Compliance and even traffic wardens. Councils are funded through rates which are a levy charged to individual households and businesses based on the value of their property or industry. Local councils may introduce bylaws which only apply to the citizens or business located within that councils area. These local bylaws give each council the opportunity to create rules for how that city or district can operate.
Admittedly, it is important to have an effective government for the growth and development of a nation. Equally, it is important to maintain a democratic government. While there are different ways of understanding what constitutes a democratic government, in public administration, democratic government can be viewed as a government that is responsive to the perspectives of its citizens and exhibit responsibility to the citizens. This can be promoted by the public institutions and public administrators (King, Feltey, & Susel, 1998). They can use various processes to ensure a democratic government including collaborative governance, decision making, citizen participation, administrative reforms, and budgeting. This paper seeks to discuss and analyze the efforts that the public organizations and the public administrators can make with regards to collaborative governance, citizen participation, and decision making to maintain a democratic government.
