Communication within the Westside School District No. 5 between the school district and the communities and families that it serves is a very dynamic process. I performed my field experience at Chiefland Elementary. Chiefland is a very small town with the population of six thousand. There are over eight hundred students enrolled at Chiefland Elementary. There are fifty-two instructional staff members and two administers. In those fifty-two staff members, there is one African American teacher and one male teacher; the rest are women. This is a white dominate school. In the school there is 73% Caucasian students, 17% African American students, and 4% Hispanic students. There is only 3% of students that are ESOL and 5% are Gifted and Talented. This semester we learned that in small areas and with low income schools, there are more Hispanics and African American people. In this case, Chiefland Elementary
Saginaw Public School District, located in Saginaw Michigan is the urban school district of Saginaw, Michigan. The case I chose was one that took place in Houston, TX, in the Houston Independent School District. I chose it because Houston is where I was born and grew up, and I wanted to use a case that felt close to home for me. This case was about a student who, throughout the course of about two years, displayed several signs of aggression, defiance, and general misbehavior both in class and at home. The misbehaviors ranged from “pestering and irritating” his/her siblings at home, throwing tantrums, and becoming easily upset or angered. The student also led a lonely life, both in class and school, expressing dislike and resentment towards siblings and other family members, as well as stating that student “feels student has no friends.” In class, the
As a teacher in Clark County School District, I taught at Jim Bridger Middle and Thurman White Middle. I worked with the special education teachers and facilitator to allow emotional an opportunity to be in a regular education class with their peers. The goal was for the students to socialize and learn from the regular education students skills in communications. These thrived in my classes. As a science teacher I am very hands-on allowing the students opportunities to communicate and problem solve. These students learned to work with their peers and become successful in both content and social
In the southeast corner of Pennsylvania, lies the town of Kennett Square. While it is a part of two school districts, the downtown area is located in the Kennett Consolidated School District. Like with all districts, there are intricacies that make Kennett special. The students are the essence of any school and those that attend affect the climate and culture. Another group of important people in the building is the teachers and administrators that help the school function every day. There are many moving parts in an educational system, and the way they come together tells the story of a school.
I recommend that the classrooms throughout the Federal Way District School System comply with The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. All classrooms should be tested. If the noise level in an unoccupied classroom exceeds 35 dBA it should be modified to meet the recommended and appropriate acoustical levels.
Further schools must develop strategies to include all families of youth within the collaboration, planning, and implementation of secondary transition-related activities, including CLD families. Olivos, Gallagher, and Aguilar (2010) developed a research-based framework for building a welcoming school environment for CLD families of students in special education. Including locating English language proficiency programs to assist clients who do not speak English as their primary language. An illustration of utilizing multicultural counseling competencies includes asking clients open-ended questions and encouraging families to elaborate on their belief system towards disability. Hernandez et al. (2006) also recommend that rehabilitation counseling agencies have bilingual rehabilitation counselors available to provide adequate services to clients whose first language is not that of the dominant culture, in addition to having forms and resources that are printed in various languages (Hernandez Cometa,., Rosen, Velcoff,, Schober,, & Luna,
Prince Georges’ County Public Schools (PGCPS) are in deep need of reservoir of good will – a bed of positive emotion that grows in good times, and protects the brand when sentiment – or the media is negative.
