Cats in the Cradle
Cats in the Cradle, a song by Harry Chapin, was a very popular song back in 1974, that featured in Top One-Hundred charts around the world. The song was intended to be a poem, but its deep lyrics and smooth rhythms led it to become one of the most successful rock songs of its time. ‘Cats in the Cradle’ depicts the story of a father, and the life he had with his son. As good as that may seem, the song is about how the father was absent from his son’s life, and how he taught his son to grow up just like him. The song’s message is felt by fathers across the world to this day and reminds them to take advantage of every day they spend with their sons. The message is that time is precious, and if you fail to build a solid relationship with your son while they are young, it could be too late to recover once they have grown up. The first verse of the song shares the troubled relationship between the father and son, when it said, “he came to the world in the usual way, but there were planes to catch and bills to pay. He learned to walk while I was away.” This verse explained that he was away on some type of career to make money for the family, and provide for the son financially. However, he wasn’t able to spend quality time with him, and missed important milestones in his life, such as taking his first steps. His career obviously came before his son and family, and he made excuses for that. Then it finishes with the chorus, which says, “when you
"All the things I am about to tell you are shameless lies." So begins the Books of Bokonon. Bokononism is an original religion that is introduced in this book, Cats Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. The book shows the importance of religion, even if that religion is "shameless lies". It also displays how people convince themselves that things are better then they really are. I read this book because of a promise I made to my father. I'm glad I made that promise; I just read a delightfully funny and deep tale about the end of the world.
“Tale of Two Citiez” by J Cole is a song featured in his 2015 album “ Forest Hill Drive”.The song is inspired by the book “Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens, the book is set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution some of the themes that the novel focuses on is the conflict between rich and poor. In an interview with Tavis Smiley Cole explains how the song compares two side of Fayetteville; the more prosperous area Forest Hill Drive opposed to the crime-ridden inner city area. In the song Cole speaks about dealing with peer pressure in living in a crime ridden place and trying to find a way out. In Monster, Steve is dealing with living in a crime ridden neighborhood where most kids around his age are into drugs,
The symbolism in this song is that life is hard for other members of the society. This song regards a man trying/ resolving to alter his ways before starting to change the world. This
The song implements on the hardships a mother will face for the growth of their son because love is what keeps them going. The love a mother will have for her son means that even though they don’t have a father figure around to show them how to grow up, they will always have their mothers to teach them the way of life through a woman’s perspective. In the song, “Dear Mama”, Tupac mentions, “For a woman it ain’t easy trying to raise a man, you always was committed” and he is able to foreshadow the hardships his mother had to face while Tupac was growing up without a father. At the age of seventeen Tupac, was always caught up in drama with his mom. Since Tupac was young he got involved into the hustle and was left in the streets where he basically had to risk he life every day. He never realized that being pushed into the streets would make him think about his mother or even worry about her. Tupac reflects upon the behavior he had during the time and how much stress he would add on his mother’s shoulders, but little did he know that his mother would be there for him regardless. Tupac Shakur’s mom was committed to his son and no matter the troubles he caused and faced she would be there for him to either help him out or at least hear him when he was not feeling good. She was a single mother on welfare, but she always tried
In Cat’s Cradle, Kurt Vonnegut investigates the negative impacts that can result from humanities pursuit of knowledge through literary structure, irony, and symbolism. Kurt Vonnegut, well known for his pessimistic attitude and writing concerning the flaws of human nature, focuses this energy into Cat’s Cradle. Using satire interweaved with poetry, Vonnegut is successful in challenging the merits of human progress.
Whiskey Lullaby is a song sung by Brad Paisley (ft. Alison Krauss) which narrates the story of a soldier coming back from war to find his wife in bed with another man. After this, the man drinks away his life trying to escape the pain until he commits suicide. Then the song continues to talk about how the woman follows down the same path after hearing about his death. In the end of the song they both get buried next to each other which symbolizes how they are finally together. The audience for this country song is those who have served or who have had family members serve. The unexpectedness of how life will figure itself out when the soldiers return. Also, how hard it is for families when their loved ones are out fighting, and they are
The first stanza, which contains the son’s childish speech, is short, only three lines. However, by the stanza which contains the son’s angry talkback, the stanza is double in length, having four lines. Each line represents a literal level of maturity and growth that the son has gained. As time moves on, he is able to gain more and more experience in life. As his experience accumulates over time, so does his hostility. His terse, childish begging for his father to simply read another story turns to an angry speech about how he no longer beleievs in his father as an authority figure. Despite this, the son’s psyche changes back, as all this maturation is played out in the father’s head, and when he returns, he is back to his childish self, bu this stanza is the longest in the poem. This suggests that when someone is able to mature enough, they are able to comprehend more of the world than they did before, and are able to act
As expressed before, the song talks about how the system that stole his job. This
Vonnegut uses the phrase to impart a cyclical quality on the novel. We see it repeating consistently in the novel, bringing us back to a theme of renewal. As a person dies, we are given an insight into the human idea that life must go on. The phrase is paradoxical to the emotions and reactions usually associated with death, but Vonnegut is never one to be predictable. As one person dies, life moves on, people keep living, and then the process repeats itself ( McGinnis, Web,1975).
The song "The message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five depicts the struggle of young black adults growing up in society. The struggle to make it out of poverty can be compared to survival of the fittest in a jungle. Only the strong would survive and adapt to the changes to fit in. Trying their best to make a betterment with whatever little society offers. Being a young black African American in the early 1980's was not easy. It was easier to live the fast life and gain fast money by being part of the drug community. Drugs, guns, and money was glamorized and this is what the young adults looked at as a means of getting rich. In the songs, a young man talks about how he is trying hard to hold on to the little bit of sanity he has left in his soul. He talks about the struggle he endures while trying not to get pushed over the edge. He was born an innocent child who's blind to the ways of mind kind. Growing up he faced many challenges and had to fight

In the reading for today, Ronnie Spector says “Even after Phil recorded our first song out in California, he refused to release it. When I asked him when Why Don’t They Let Us Fall in Love was coming out, he answered without a missing beat. “Never”, he said.” (pg.44). Before she makes this statement in the passage, she tells the audience about how her fans are gays and lesbians. Her theory to this was that her group was “half-breeds”, and the gays and lesbians may have liked their group because they were outsiders too. She then goes on to say that their live shows were the only way her fans could hear them, before they had come out with their first hit “Be My Baby”. After she says that Phil had said no to releasing their song “Why Don’t They
‘No matter gay, straight, or bi, I was born to survive’. In the words of lady GaGa herself it doesn’t matter who you marry, what your gender is or what’s you race you just need to accept others and yourself. Lady GaGa’s song ‘Born this Way’ informs others about self-acceptance in her new album ‘Born this way’. This song is about people abusing others and reflecting badly on them self because of their race, gender and choice in who they marry. Lady GaGa expresses her thoughts about people’s issues to say it doesn’t matter who you are because you were born that way.
Her first line reveals that the following emotional breakdown is a result of standing by as an opportunity comes and goes (Jones qtd. in Kimbrough). Jones wishes that she could go back and make a different decision, but it is too late. The speaker proceeds to lament the missed chance with a lover, her regret made evident in the repeated line, “ I don’t know why I didn’t come” (Jones qtd. in Kimbrough). Presented simultaneously with the text, the song strengthens the idea that failing to take action leads to sorrow.
This song was written in 1974 by Harry Chapin. This song was written to show people a relationship between a father and a son. This relationship is neither good or bad, but maybe more awkward. It was an eye opening song for people at the time, which made people think about the important things in life. Near the end of the song the father realizes that he did not spend enough time with his son. He also realizes that his son is now just like him and can not spend any time with him. It is now a classic song enjoyed by the many generations and will be enjoyed by generations to come. It is a truly timeless
