There are many social problems in our world today, many of which can cause health problems like air pollution in China. China is one of the largest countries in the world with a population of around 1.4 billion people. Air pollution or smog has been a serious issue that China has been trying to control, recently the president of China said that the country plans on leaving behind coal and move towards renewable energy. China plans to stick to its plan from the Paris agreement to focus on cutting C02 emissions and focus on renewable energy and move China away from a polluted planet to the leader in renewable energy.

It has always been important to look after our local environment if only so that we can pass on to our children and grandchildren an environment at least as good as we have enjoyed. Today, however, it is not just the local environment that is at risk but the global environment. Small amounts of pollution for which each of us is responsible are affecting everyone in the world. For instance, very small quantities of chlorofluoro- carbons CFCs emitted to the atmosphere from leaking refrigerators or some industrial processes have resulted in degradation of the ozone layer. Of greater importance is the carbon dioxide that enters the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil and gas, which is leading to damaging climate change. Global warming has been a universal issue for many decades. It started back at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, when people unknowingly released fumes from factories into the air. Although global warming has been an all-around topic, it has recently started to gain media attention due to the many catastrophic events that have occurred around the globe. Global warming can be defined as, “a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth 's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.” Humans burning fossil fuels discharge greenhouse gases. Not only are we gravely endangering the earth for ourselves, but we are also causing the environment to become an unsuitable habitat for all the wildlife that has already inhabited the earth for many, many years. As we continue to destroy the earth, the consequences will increase in a grave manner. I will make the argument as to why we should become more eco friendly in order to save the earth’s natural state of being.

Most people never stop to think about the sanitation of the air around them. The only places that people ruminate over air quality are largely populated states and cities. One of these places is California. Ominous clouds of smog and polluted air constantly hover over the citizens. These people don’t ever look up and worry, because smog is a usual appearance. This issue destroys not only the earth and its atmosphere, but the very center of our lives: our bodies’ health. Particulate pollutants are like the retroviruses of the world: well-rounded and dangerous. Air pollution is the largest ecological issue of our time because the contaminated air lingers all over the world constantly being augmented to, and further threatening the world and those who lives in it.

In order to further understand the environmental problems facing this planet, it is important to know just how bad the atmosphere is being polluted. The primary pollutant in the atmosphere is carbon dioxide, and it is infecting the atmosphere at an outstanding rate. This carbon dioxide goes into the air, and creates what is known as fog. Every second, 2.4 million pounds of carbon dioxide is being emitted ("Carbon dioxide emissions rise to 2.4 million pounds per second"). This number is still on the rise, with no real successful efforts to stop it yet. To enlarge the scale, each year the carbon dioxide emissions rise to about one billion more tons than the previous year. “Because emissions of the key greenhouse gas have been rising steadily and most carbon stays in the air for a century, it is not just unlikely but "rather optimistic" to think that the world can limit future temperature increases to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit)” this shows that there is a way to stop it, if all countries just work together to clean up our atmosphere (Peters).

Imagine having your life cut short by at least ten years. This is the reality for many people who are constantly exposed to high levels of air pollution. In the midwestern United States, members of the Teamsters Union are at a higher risk of lung cancer. These union members are truck drivers and mechanics who simply work their hardest every day to make a living. They haul heavy equipment or material to construction sites or warehouses. Workers may have to load and unload equipment as well as repair any problems the vehicles have. Similar to the average American, they work many hours a day and spend even more hours on the road driving and hauling equipment from place to place.

Air pollution is affecting all humans, and we cannot close our eyes to the problems because the sense that detects this issue is our smell. Air pollution in China is a growing environmental hazard that needs immediate attention in order to save the lives of millions of citizens. Air pollution in China is known to cause over one million premature deaths per year (Zhao et. al., 2017). The Chinese have become accustomed to days when a large fog like cloud covers many of the large cities to a point that the sun is no longer visible. The fog like substance is actually polluted air, and it has the ability to turn day into night. The polluted air is not only aesthetically unappealing, it comes with many health hazards that are detrimental. Breathing in toxic air has been repeatedly linked to higher incidence rates of both lung cancer and heart disease (Wu, et. al.,2016). Anyone who breathes in the polluted air is at an increased risk for developing such noncommunicable diseases, but children and the elderly are at a heightened risk due to their often compensated respiratory and immune systems. During an average month, China only meets the World Health Organizations target air quality index for developed countries for six days out of the whole month (Zhao et. al., 2017). The majority of air pollution issues take place in large cities, the majority of which are concentrated on the east coast of the country. Wind conditions can also cause the polluted air to shift to neighboring cities.

The earth is home to many animals. These animals use resources from the earth in order to survive. With earth’s temperatures rising, the air we breathe is affected and could easily harm us. “Global Warming is an increase in the earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution.” (Merriam-Webster) We are so clueless to the fact that the damage of the earth is mostly caused by humans. The four main causes of pollution are water, air, land and agricultural pollution. All are different, but all cause damage to our environment. Which is why we need to be more careful with taking care of our atmosphere and planet.

When people go out with friends and family members, they do not have cheerful mood to enjoy the time when they are supposed to be joyous because they have to wear masks all the time. Our Earth is able to maintain a sustainable temperature because of the Greenhouse effect. Without it, the planet would be adverse and completely uninhabitable. The greenhouse gases water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone are natural gases that are present in the atmosphere. They cause little to no harm when they are balanced but overtime humans have overproduced them, causing temperatures to rise and a heap of other problems. The imbalance of greenhouse gases is caused by the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, decomposing organic matter, the use of fertilizer, and CFC’s. In this essay, I will first discuss the specific causes of Global warming, then I will address the effects, and finally detail how we as a society can help save our environment from further damage.

The Central Valley contains the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley, stretching from Redding to Bakersfield, which is the home to millions of residents. It was named as the Central Valley because its geographical location is in the center of the state of California which is surrounded by mountain ranges. The bowl shaped valley contains all the emissions and activities that the residents cause from travelling to work and other places. Not only does the Central Valley get its pollution from the valley, but it also gets air pollution that are transported from the Bay Area (valleyair.org). Due to the valley’s bowl shape, it traps the pollution which causes many issues and is a serious problem. This research paper will focus on the major source of air pollution, factors responsible for poor air quality, impacts of air pollutants in the valley, and regulations.

Air pollution refers to a chemical, physical or biological alteration to the atmospheric air. It results whenever harmful gasses, smoke, or dust enters the atmosphere and in turn, hinders the survival of animals and plants as the air contains toxic substances.
