On February 25, 1991, during the Gulf War, an American Patriot Missile battery in Dharan, Saudi Arabia, failed to track and intercept an incoming Iraqi Scud missile. The Scud struck an American Army barracks, killing 28 soldiers and injuring around 100 other people. A report of the General Accounting office, GAO/IMTEC-92-26, entitled Patriot Missile Defense: Software Problem Led to System Failure at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia reported on the cause of the failure. It turns out that the cause was an inaccurate calculation of the time since boot due to computer arithmetic errors. Specifically, the time in tenths of second as measured by the system’s internal clock was multiplied by 1/10 to produce the time in seconds. This calculation was performed
After the attack, the Taliban led by Osama Bin Laden claimed the attack to be there wrath of anger towards the United States. This was because of the United States siding with Israel and still being apart of the Persian war and having troops in the Middle East. Now, we can assume that if the United States has
After a decision was made in 1984 by the army to give it an anti-tactical ballistic missile capability, a series of modifications and additions were made to the system's software and to the missile warhead and fuse (pac-2). These upgrades were then fully tested, manufactured and deployed in Saudi Arabia on time for Desert Storm. This system was designed to defend military targets such as bases against relatively short-range tactical ballistic missiles," Charles A. Zraket articulates before the House Subcommittee on Government Operations. (Simon, 1996) The U.S. Army’s mission during the Persian Gulf War was to shoot down incoming Al-Hussein missiles and Iraqi scud missiles. The mission in Saudi Arabia differed from the Israel mission because Patriot units only had to push the missile away from its intended target or disable the incoming targets warhead. Disabling the warhead ensured minimal casualties as the scuds would typically target military outposts or civilian populations. The overall success rate of the Patriot missile system during the Persian Gulf War was 70% in Saudi Arabia and 40% in Israel. (Simon,
This project identifies a two possible issues that can happen during the system operations like hacking or data loss due to improper security provided to the company branches and there is no proper infrastructure of the firewall for the network structure. The aircraft security policy result in failure due to their two year reset program.
Al Qaeda was founded in 1988 by the most wanted terrorist in America, Osama Bin Laden, to bring together Arabs who fought in Afghanistan against the Soviet Invasion. Al Qaeda works with allied Islamic extremist groups to take over regimes it deems "non-Islamic" and remove Westerners from Muslin countries. The organization first began with three members and now there are approximately 200 to 1,000 current members. Al-Qaeda began to construct and offer training camps and guesthouses to its recruits; while they also attempted to pull in U.S. citizens for financial, communication, and operation reasons for the benefit of Al-Qaeda and its other affiliations. By 1990 Al-Qaeda was providing military and intelligence training in various areas including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Sudan.
The incorporation of Patriot was a result of the confrontation with the Soviet Union. The Patriot system was instantaneously recognized in Desert Storm. Operation Desert Storm began on January 16, 1991. The conflict, better known as the Gulf War, was in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Desert Storm was a crucial battle where Air Defense had the opportunity to showcase its abilities.

On October 23, 1983, a massive explosion from a 19-ton truck full of explosives attacked military barracks and killed 241 servicemen (including 220 U.S. Marines) in Beirut, Lebanon. The blast was the biggest known non-nuclear explosion since World War II and was the "bloodiest day since Iowa Jima," according to Rick Hampson writing in USA Today.

“Desert Storm was the first combat test of the cruise missile system. It also marked the first coordinated Tomahawk and manned aircraft strike in history. Within the first few minutes of Operation Desert Storm, Tomahawk missiles launched from battleships Missouri and Wisconsin struck with accuracy at Iraq’s presidential palace,” (Hersh, Press, 1994, p.137).

That day German ships arrived at Toulon to take over the base and seize France’s ships in an operation referred to as Operation Lila57. Operation Lila failed, however, because Admiral de Laborde, who served as the commander of the fleet, followed Admiral Darlan’s order to sink any ships that Germany or Italy attempted to take hold of.58 As a result, a total of seventy seven ships were scuttled.59 Some of the ships that France loss were submarines, battleships, cruisers and destroyers.60 Although the French confirmed that they could uphold their promise months after Operation Catapult through their actions at Toulon, there was no way Churchill could have foreseen it. France’s word was not enough. To Churchill, it was critical that Britain make
Israel was not the only foreigner in Lebanon. The United Nations also, had French and American soldiers stationed in Lebanon as UN peacekeepers (Byers, 2003). This did not, please Hezbollah, who wanted all foreigners off Lebanese soil. On April 18, 1983, Hezbollah finally struck. A Hezbollah operative drove an explosive laden van into the U.S. embassy in Beirut, Lebanon killing sixty-three individuals (Byers). Encouraged by this success Hezbollah then struck again on October 23, 1986, using suicide bombers in vehicles to blow up both the U.S. Marine Barracks and the French Paratroop Barracks, killing 241 Americans and 58 French. By, February 26, 1984, just four months after the devastating attack on the Marine Barracks the United States pulled its forces out of Lebanon (Byers).
